18th July 2012 #1 gambetti 🎙️ Here for the gear Joined: Nov 2010 Posts: 22 🎧 10 years K+H o96 A friend of mine offered me a pair of K+H o96. While being 20+ years old, they seem to be in good condition and my friend would also kindly let me try them at my place for a week. But as the transport would cost him (and also me) a considerable amount of time, I first want to hear your opinion about those speakers, is it worth the trouble? Would they be an improvement over my current setup? I'm no audio engineer by the way, but a musician / composer. Experimental, bass-heavy electronic and avantgarde acoustic music. Current monitors are ADAM P11, which I like, but they are too weak in the bass. My studio is approx. 35 m² and very well treated. Listening distance is 1,8 meters, monitoring level is usually low to moderate. If possible I'd like to avoid using a subwoofer. The speakers will be soffit mounted. As I can't do repairs myself, service / reliability is important. Thanks for sharing any experience. Joined: Dec 2004 Posts: 1,555 🎧 15 years Hm, a friend of mine has the O96 for main speakers in his studio. First of all: I don't think that they like to be soffit-mounted. One problem is the rejected heat of the amps, another is that we found out that they're more than finnicky re their position. "Correct bass" vs. "muddy bass" has been a question of centimeters in his half-treated room. But this is also one of the advantages of this monitor: once set up, it's so easy to find the low frequency sweet spots in the mix. You don't have that "sub-sonic sensation" going like with other speakers, but everything is really perfectly audible IMHO. Since they're a closed cabinet design, you won't find LF exaggeration like in ported speakers. Then: if they were properly serviced in the past, you shouldn't have a problem soon (is the crossover paper sealing broken on the rear?). If not, be prepared to have the circuits recapped and the crossover re-calibrated. Especially the latter is a PITA! That's a very practical feature of my P11s. If not, there is lots of space behind the speaker. The K+Hs were originally installed in a local broadcast station, so I hope they've been treated with care. I'll check the paper sealing. So you think I wouldn't need a subwoofer? I know closed cabinets have a gentle 2nd order cutoff slope (and specs are relative of course), but 80 - 12,5k Hz +- 1,5 dB doesn't exactly look like full range speakers. On the other hand, I don't want an earthquake in my studio, just precise judgement. Sounds like I should try it at least and measure the room response.
