randymoser R Hi guys, I’ve spent just about half my life on bikes and figure it’s time I owned a BMW. I have my eye on two K75s bikes, but I’m not sure if I should wait for a nice K100RS to pop up. Right now I have around $2500, which seems to buy me a clean 45k K75, but it appears the 100 goes for about a grand more. That's about another month obsession. I’m coming off of a café racer Hawk GT. Before that I owned a mix of bikes, mostly FJ1200 / new Triumph Trident 900 / CB750 types of machines. I like the Hawk, but I really want to do some LD riding in the future and I’m leaning towards K bikes – obviously ;) I will be doing most of my touring solo and I was wondering what the relative merits are of the 750 vs the 1000. I’ve been told the smaller K is smoother, but it seems only slightly less heavy and I’m afraid that it might be too soft for me. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t need or want a GSXR in my next bike, but I’d like something in the Nighthawk 750 range. Does the K75 get better mileage than the 1000? How else would you choose between the two machines? Thanks! Randy In AVL #1 · Sep 11, 2007 Hi guys, I’ve spent just about half my life on bikes and figure it’s time I owned a BMW. The key to riding a K75 if you want speed is to run it up above 4000 rpm and ride it hard - it's a bulletproof engine more or less. I used to ride my K75RT around Montana at 100mph all day long. That said, the K100 will beat a K75 off the line every time and certainly has more oomph. IF you're an agressive ride that likes power, go with the K100. If you're more into touring (one up) then a K75 will be fine. K75 gets slightly better gas mileage but I wouldn't consider that a factor in the decision. If you can, take each for a test ride - that's the best way. And when you test ride the K75, don't be afraid to run it up from 4 to 7k to get a feel for the powerband. #4 · Sep 11, 2007 K75 The K75 is the way to go. The smoothness of the motor is very noticeable and should not be overlooked. The K100 is fast but if you want fast and cheap go with a k1100rs bigger wheels and better brakes. I have had many K bikes and always come back to the old K75 #5 · Sep 12, 2007 Thanks for all the help, guys. An old neighbor had a K100RS when my wife and I first moved to Asheville. He offered me a ride a few times, but I always backed out. The bike looked tall and I was afraid I’d drop it. A friend did take it for a run and said all sorts of contrary things about it: It was tall and top heavy, but had a low COG; it was the inverse of my old low and heavy FJ1200; it was like my old T3 Triumph with “automotive” power, but the bars were too narrow… If you had to compare the K75 to another bike, what would it be? On paper it looks around early 90s VFR level, but I know it’s not as sporty. It’s sort of in line with a Nighthawk 750, too, but it looks a lot more sophisticated to me. What did these bikes used to stack up against on road tests? Thanks again! Randy In AVL #6 · Sep 12, 2007 I wouldn't compare the K75 to any other bike. It's unique: Water-cooled In-line 3 cylinder engine Shaft drive Engine that will last FOREVER if properly maintained. And S-M-O-O-T-H..... Not any other bikes out there like that. Stop posting and go take one for a test ride. :D #7 · Sep 12, 2007

As you can see by what I ride, I'm in 100% agreement. IF you're patient and look around, you can get a very decent K1100RS in the $3500-4000 range. #8 · Sep 12, 2007 K75 is definitely the smoother one of the two. One thing you can get away with on the K100 is if you take off in 2nd gear from a stop. Fusses a bit, but you can get going. On the K75, you'll most likely kill the motor unless you intentionally slip the clutch to get going. I don't know if the final drive ratio is the same for both, but that would explain the 2nd gear issue if they were. But, as mentioned, a whole lot smoother. Another thing, too, is that it gives the Harley riders you ride with the impression that they can actually keep up. :teeth #9 · Sep 12, 2007 The best motorcycle I ever owned was a Marakesh RED K75s. One fine, fine pony and many enjoyable miles. With an Ohlins shock and Progressive fork springs it was godly. #10 · Sep 13, 2007 Invitation? Hey Flying Duck, is that an invitation? Are you available tomorrow at noon? ;) The two K75s I’m looking at are in VA and TN, both about six hours away. Good thing I need to save another $400 to buy either of these machines. I’ve sort of gotten used to the idea that I’ll have to buy this BMW sight unseen, a few states away. Now the last time I bought a bike unseen was a bit of a nightmare. I ended up in a corn field at 4 a.m., a very ugly ’86 VFR dead as a doornail, the rectifier fried. I have much higher hopes for the K75! Randy In AVL #11 · Sep 13, 2007 I've bought 6 K bikes sight unseen (five from CA and one from MT) and got exactly what I paid for each time. (Well, execpt for my K11RS, I got an awesome deal on that bike.) IN GENERAL, BMW owners tend to be pretty honest, straightforward sellers. But I do know a guy who bought a K75 off of ebay that turned out to be a piece of crap. One option you have is to sign up on the "Big List" over at IBMWR, introduce yourself and see if someone who lives near a prospective K75 might be willing to go take a look for you in person. It's been known to happen and it never hurts to ask. http://www.ibmwr.org/faq-files/mail.shtml #12 · Sep 13, 2007 Oh, and in case you haven't stumbled across this yet: http://www.verrill.com/moto/kbikebuyingguide.shtml #13 · Sep 15, 2007 K100 I have no comparison per se, but the K100 is strong and has a nice rasp when you roll on the throttle. Leaving stop signs in second gear is an every day thing for me. #14 · Nov 24, 2007 K75 or K100 I have a 1985 k100rs and a 1986 K75T 18" rear wheel with a rear drum brake, Pichler fairing. I rode the K75 to Montana back in 1998 from Chicago (to the bmw rally). The k75 has plenty of power (I rode 2up) top speed was 125 mph. My K100rs has a much smaller fairing, but buffers the wind MUCH better than the pichler fairing. Top speed on my K100rs is just over 150mph (9200 rpm, that's 500 rpm over redline. the engine looses spark @9200) :teeth I would love to find one of these chips that increase the rpm to 11,000 rpm The k75 is lighter, handles better, gets almost 200 miles to a tank of gas. The k100 heaver, faster, quicker, and more comfortable. gets a little over 150 miles per tank. bottom line .....both are great bikes. #15 · Nov 28, 2007 I have a 1987 K-75s. Since I live in Florida I ride year round, gone on many tours with people that had bigger bikes.. and never had trouble keeping up. I can't imagine you being disappointed with the k-75. Also , when you get a bike update the post so we can see what you got. #16 · Nov 28, 2007 Back in 1986 when I bought my K75, I test rode both the K75 and the K100 2 up. While the 100 had extra power, the 75 had more than enough with two of us on it, plus it was so much smoother than it's 4 cylinder brother. It was a no-brainer for us, the K75 was what I rode home. Later, at the dealers open house, I had a K100 owner get pissed when I told him I would not trade my K75 for any K100 because of the vibration. For a moment I thought I was going to have to physicaly defend myself. #17 · Nov 29, 2007 150 Mph K100 What did you do to your K100RS to get 150 out of it? #18 · Nov 29, 2007 k100rs @150 Nothing except it has a supertrap exhaust, and I go 92-9300 rpm. that is when the puter shuts it off. chuck #19 · Dec 28, 2007 My two cents: the K100 has a very noticable vibration issue in the handlebars. Hands start numbing in 20 min. or less. Long straights are mostly one handed switching off, using the "Throttlemiester". A true cuise would help that immensly though. Insert Quotes Post Reply
