History[]
In 1981, the Interdynamic KG-9(TEC-9) hit the U.S. market. It was an open-bolt semi-automatic pistol feeding from magazines that ranged from 10- to 50-rounds, and could even use a 72-round drum. This, combined with the ease at which an owner could convert their KG-9 to fire fully automatic, brought a world of trouble on Interdynamic's heads as the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) demanded that the KG-9 be redesigned to fire from a closed bolt.
Interdynamic (now Intratec) complied, and the resulting pistol was the KG-99. The pistol did fire from a closed bolt, however, it was still very easy to convert to automatic. The KG-99 was featured heavily in Miami Vice, where it was legally converted to full-auto, and was the tool of choice for gangs and mass shooters alike. The KG-99 ceased production in 1994.
After the 1994 Federal Assault Weapons Ban, Intratec tried to continue producing the pistol, and amended the design again, this time removing the iconic barrel shroud and threaded barrel, calling it the AB-10 (After Ban); the model that is currently featured in-game. The AB-10 flopped and Intratec ceased all operations in 2001.
In-Game[]
General Information[]
The KG-99 looks almost physically identical to the TEC-9 except for the slight color difference, the removed front barrel shroud, and the fact that the weapon is semi-auto and boasts a slower RoF, which in turn gives the weapon better damage, being it able to 3SK to the head and torso and 5SK at all ranges.
Usage & Tactics[]
KG-99 should be used in close to close-mid combat, since the low recoil, high RoF, above-average damage ranges, 3 to 4sk to the torso, and 3sk to the limbs/arms can make the KG-99 a solid pistol, but it can be also used as a lower recoil and faster firing alternative to the Five-seveN.
The KG-99 can also equip an extended mag, which increases the capacity to 32 rounds, which is only 1(2 including the round in the chamber) round(s) less than the 9mm Glocks with their respective Extended Mags.
Adding the Long barrel on KG-99 increases its muzzle velocity to 1800 (OG: 1500), which can really help for the mid-range kills, add Plus P with the long barrel, and it will be increased to 1890 so it can be on par with pistols such as the M9, GB-22, and Five Seven.
Conclusion[]
The KG-99 is a surprisingly balanced pistol to use as a secondary thanks to its low recoil, high RoF, access to an extended magazine and a full stock to negate recoil, it make a good alternative to the Five Seven, minus the penetration capabilities or high muzzle velocity. It's a jack-of-trades pistol to use, it's actually a solid pistol to have.
Pros & Cons[]
Pros:
- Stable damage.
- Deep reserves.
- Common ammunition type.
- High ammo capacity.
- Low per-shot recoil.
- Has access to an extended magazine.
- Has access to a Full stock.
- Second-highest RoF in-class—only beaten by the ZIP 22's 1000 RPM RoF.
Cons:
- Below average headshot damage for its class.
- Poor penetration.
- Typically below-average muzzle velocity.
- Headshots do not reduce STK on full-health enemies.
Trivia[]
- The KG-99 has an open-end upper receiver tube where the bolt, recoil springs, and buffer plate are held in place by the plastic/polymer lower receiver frame. This design only allows for 115 grain 9mm ammunition, and if heavier grain ammunition or hot loads were used, the plastic lower receiver will fail or crack, rendering the firearm unusable.
- Later versions of the weapon had a threaded upper receiver tube at the rear and a screw-on end cap to contain the bolt, recoil spring, and buffer plate, even if removed from the lower receiver, solving the problem of lower receiver failure when using hot ammo.
- In real life, the KG-99 has a different set of iron sights than the TEC-9, however, the KG-99’s iron sights in-game are recycled from the TEC-9.
- The KG-99's model used to not have a trigger when it was still in the testing phase like the TEC-9 which had a similar model, albeit a lighter color palette.
- This issue was fixed when it was released into the main game in the 5.6.0 (2021 Independence day )Update alongside the TEC-9.
- When the KG-99 was released in the Phantom Forces test place server, it was only able to 4SK to the torso and limbs, and 3SK to the head, until March 15th, 2021, when the KG-99 was buffed to be able to 3SK to the torso and limbs, and still kept its 3SK to the head, while dropping to a 6SK at the end of its damage range.
- Before the KG-99 remodel, when it was equipped with Short Barrel and Full/Half Ring sights, the front sight is not placed at the front end of the barrel shroud – it floats mid-air in front of the barrel at the exact same spot as if the barrel was the default length.
- Despite the KG-99 firing from a closed bolt in real life it used to fire from an open bolt just like the TEC-9 in game. This mistake was fixed in Part 1 of the Pacific Cold Front update alongside it receiving a max damage and reload speed buff.
- When the KG-99 got a remodel that removed its front barrel shroud. This was likely done to distinguish it from the TEC-9.
