What Is Klonopin?

Klonopin (Clonazepam) is a medication that belongs to the drug class benzodiazepine. Klonopin is available as a generic drug, and is prescribed for the treatment of anxiety and seizure disorders.

What Are Side Effects of Klonopin?

Klonopin may cause serious side effects including:

• new or worsening seizures,
• severe drowsiness,
• unusual changes in mood or behavior,
• confusion,
• aggression,
• hallucinations,
• thoughts of suicide or hurting yourself,
• weak or shallow breathing,
• pounding heartbeats or fluttering in your chest, and
• unusual or involuntary eye movements

Get medical help right away, if you have any of the symptoms listed above.

Common side effects of Klonopin include:

• drowsiness,
• dizziness,
• weakness,
• unsteadiness,
• depression,
• loss of orientation,
• headache,
• sleep disturbances,
• problems with thinking or memory,
• slurred speech,
• dry mouth,
• sore gums,
• runny nose,
• loss of appetite,
• diarrhea,
• constipation, and
• blurred vision.

Seek medical care or call 911 at once if you have the following serious side effects:

• Serious eye symptoms such as sudden vision loss, blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain or swelling, or seeing halos around lights;
• Serious heart symptoms such as fast, irregular, or pounding heartbeats; fluttering in your chest; shortness of breath; and sudden dizziness, lightheadedness, or passing out;
• Severe headache, confusion, slurred speech, arm or leg weakness, trouble walking, loss of coordination, feeling unsteady, very stiff muscles, high fever, profuse sweating, or tremors.

Klonopin During Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Klonopin use during pregnancy may cause adverse effects in the fetus and it is secreted in breast milk. Breastfeeding while taking Klonopin is not recommended. If Klonopin is discontinued abruptly after long term use, it may lead to seizures, tremors, muscle cramping, vomiting, and/or sweating.
