Know Your Rights

You Have the Right to Speak to a Lawyer

If you are detained, do not sign anything without speaking to an attorney first. You can say: “I want to speak to a lawyer.” You have the right to make a phone call to your attorney or a trusted person. If you cannot afford a lawyer, ask for a list of free legal services.

If You Are Stopped in Public or at Work

Ask if you are free to leave. If the officer says yes, walk away calmly. If you are detained, say: “I am exercising my right to remain silent.” Do not run or resist—this can be used against you. If ICE is at your workplace, you do not have to answer questions about your immigration status.

Document Everything

Write down the agent’s name, badge number, and anything they say. If possible, record the interaction (check your state’s recording laws). Get witness contact information in case you need them for legal defense.

Make an Emergency Plan

Memorize important phone numbers in case you are detained. Have a trusted person who can help with your children, legal documents, and personal matters. Know where to find legal resources in your area. Know the A-Number (Alien Registration Number) of immigrant loved ones. It’s the best way to locate them if detained.
