The Camel returns in March...sort of.

Land Rover will stage a Camel Trophy-like truck-based multi-sport race next year called the G4 Challenge, starting in New York on March 30, 2003. The company plans on making the event -- slated to span five weeks -- an annual competition, much like the Camel Trophy, which Land Rover officially quit doing in 1999 after an 18-year-run as the quintessential off-road driving/adventure competition.

The G4 Challenge will feature competitors from 16 countries competing in four stages starting in New York and progressively moving to the West Coast and then onto Australia and South Africa. The event will cover 4,000 miles during its course.

Much like its Camel Trophy competitions, Land Rover anticipates thousands to apply to compete once recruitment begins at the end of August. The company has set up a Web site, landroverg4challenge.com, as part of its recruitment efforts and will pick one competitor from each of the countries it is considering.

Land Rover plans to include all four of its vehicles – Range Rover, Discovery, Freelander and Defender – in the competition, each painted in orange and outfitted with expedition equipment to help competitors tackle the terrain. In addition, kayaks, mountain bikes and climbing gear will be used to complete the event.
