About the Lenovo ThinkPad T14s G2, we wrote last year "Very good business laptop despite 16:9". With the new Lenovo ThinkPad T14s G3, the "despite" is gone, as Lenovo is going back to the taller screen ration 16:10 with the 2022 model.

At MWC 2022, Lenovo is announcing this new ThinkPad T14s Gen 3, the flagship of the ThinkPad T series for large business customers, in two versions: With Intel Alder Lake as well as AMD Ryzen 6000U.

Lenovo ThinkPad T14s Gen 3: New 2.8K OLED Option with 90 Hz

Alongside the move to 16:10, the screen options are renewed. Lenovo keeps around most things they offered with the predecessor, but now with the equivalent 16:10 resolution. WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200) is replacing FHD (1,920 x 1,080).

Both the AMD and the Intel models will be available with a 2.2K resolution panel (2.240 x 1.400), a completely new option, though we are disappointed by the meager brightness this panel will offer (300 cd/m²).

Much more interesting is the 2.8K screen. This one is an OLED panel that will offer 400 cd/m² of brightness and DCI-P3 coverage. The T14s G3 marks the first time OLED is used in a T ThinkPad, and it is also the first 90 Hz panel in a ThinkPad laptop.

ThinkPad T14s 2022: less screen bezel, no more mechanical docking & USB 4.0 for the AMD model

Because the size of the display changes with 16:10, Lenovo us using a new chassis. The biggest difference is the smaller screen bezel below the display panel. While this is a positive change, the change in the keyboard area is to be seen critical. Since the chassis is less wide, the keyboard will not have the full standard width; some keys on the right side of the chassis are smaller.

Almost unchanged are the ports, even their positioning stays the same. However, the mechanical docking port that doubled as a Mini-Ethernet port is removed. Also, the AMD variants of the ThinkPad T14s Gen 3 gains support for USB 4.0 for the first time - an advantage compared to the cheaper ThinkPad T14 G3 AMD, which does not have USB 4.0.

USB 4.0 becomes possible through the use of AMD Ryzen 6000. Aside from the Ryzen chips, Lenovo is also offering Intel Alder Lake processors. In the spec sheet, Lenovo mentions a power limit of 19 W; we expect both Alder Lake U and Alder Lake P options. Apart from the CPU, RAM is also updated to LPDDR5-4800 (Intel) / LPDDR5-6400 (AMD).

Lenovo ThinkPad T14s G3: Pricing & availability

The Lenovo ThinkPad T14s G3 Intel starts at $1,530, while the T14s G3 AMD is more affordable with a base-price of $1,400. The AMD model enters the market in May, while the Intel model will not see the light of day until June.
