Lesson 4: Personal Pronoun 3 | Learn Vietnamese With Linh!

First-person and second-person in plural:

So you have learned a few words for first-person and second-person, but you haven’t learn them in the plural form yet.

These charts are created by me after a long talk with my friends. We agree that these plural forms of personal pronouns in Vietnamese are confusing as hell. There is no system and people pretty much learn by the time. But don’t be scared. You don’t have to remember all of these chart, especially the rude versions. I won’t teach you with these words. They are just for reference, in case you hear some words but not sure what they really mean.

  • First-person in plural
We Chúng tôi Only about people who talk in the conversation
Chúng ta Include everyone in the conversation, the talkers and the listeners.
Chúng tao The rude version of chúng tôi
Chúng tớ The friendly version of chúng tôi
Chúng mình The same as chúng ta
  • Second-person in plural
You Các bạn You in plural
Các cậu Pairs with chúng tớ
Chúng mày Pairs with chúng tao
  • Third-person in plural
They Họ Bọn họ Words talking about people
Chúng nó Words talking about animals, insects…
Chúng Can be used for both people and animals. However, if it’s used for people, it’s considered to be rude. People who use this word must have looked down on the people they are talking about.

Here are a few notes on making the plural form of personal pronouns. You may have noticed “chúng,” “các,” “bọn”, they are few of many words that are added to singular personal pronouns to make the plural forms.

Chúng Can go with all singular personal pronouns except “họ” and “cậu”The world itself is considered rude to call people, so it’s an informal word. Chúng tôi Chúng tớ Chúng tao Chúng mình We
Chúng ta We (include talkers and listeners)
Chúng mày You (rude)
Chúng nó They (for animals)
Các Can only go with second-person personal pronouns Các is formal, so don’t go with rude words like “mày” Các bạn Các cậu You (in plural)
Tụi Tụi is like chúng, can go with all singular personal pronouns except “họ”It’s informal, doesn’t go with “bạn” Tụi tôi Tụi tớ Tụi tao Tụi mình We
Tụi cậu Tụi mày You
Tụi nó They (for people, rude)
Bọn Bọn can go with any personal pronouns. It’s informal, doesn’t go with “bạn” Bọn tôi Bọn tớ Bọn tao Bọn mình We
Bọn cậu Bọn mày You
Bọn họ Bọn nó They
