Lexus SUV Review: GX vs. LX

Full-size luxury SUVs are still some of the most opulent vehicles on the market. Most automobile brands only have one large extravagant SUV, but not Lexus.

Lexus offers consumers with two high-end SUV options: the GX and LX.

Even though the GX and LX proudly wear Lexus badges, they have key differences that make them extremely different machines.

Here, we are going to attempt to compare them and highlight some differences.

GX

The name GX stands for Grand Crossover. The GX is largely based on the Toyota 4Runner and the Land Cruiser Prado. Lexus introduced the first generation of the GX (470) in 2002. It subsequently became the third SUV to enter the Lexus lineup.

In the Lexus lineup, the GX is positioned between the RX crossover and the premium full-size, off-road capable LX.

The GX improved on previous Toyota SUV platforms with updated frontal styling to better integrate with the Lexus lineup.

The latest model GX received a second facelift with a redesigned, more angular spindle grille along with new triple-beam LED headlamps. An Off-Road package is also new. It consists of a 360-degree Panoramic View Monitor and Multi-Terrain Monitor with 4 Cameras, a transmission cooler, a fuel-tank protector along with Lexus’ own Crawl Control and Multi-Terrain Select. Additionally, the interior gains new trim options, and safety features part of Safety System+ are now standard on all models.

The Lexus GX continues to offer just one engine: a 4.6-litre V-8 that generates 301 horsepower and 329 lb-ft of torque. This powerplant is teamed with a six-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.

The GX 460 Luxury is the range-topping option for the GX SUV. It is not exactly affordable by any means. However, it is much more affordable than the entry-level LX 570.

Seating capacity

The GX comes with a seven-passenger layout as standard.

The 2020 Lexus GX 460 is a traditional three-row SUV with seating for seven people. Available second-row captain’s chairs reduce seating capacity to six. There are base and Luxury trim levels available.

LX

The LX name stands for “Luxury Crossover”. However, some Lexus importers use the backronym name, “Luxury Four Wheel Drive”.

Like the GX, LX comes with a V8 engine. However, LX produces more power. The LX comes with a 5.7-litre V8 that generates 383 horsepower and 403 pound-feet of torque.

In terms of fuel economy, there is not a big difference between the GX and the LX. However, with its eight-speed automatic transmission, the LX can get up to an EPA-estimated 12 miles per gallon city, 16 mpg highway and 14 combined, while the GX is rated at 15/19/16 mpg (city/highway/combined).

The LX has a longer wheelbase than the GX, 112 inches compared to 109 inches, which translates to more interior space. The LX has more front headroom, legroom, shoulder room, hip room, rear shoulder room, and rear legroom than the GX.

The more spacious interior in the LX also translates to more cargo capacity, as the LX is rated to hold up to 83.1 cubic feet of cargo, while the GX offers you with a total of 64.7 cubic feet of cargo space.

Seating capacity

The LX seats five people in two-row models and eight in three-row models. Leather upholstery, power-adjustable front seats, and power-sliding second-row seats are standard.

Final Analysis

The Lexus LX is a luxury vehicle that happens to be an SUV, while the GX is an SUV that’s luxurious. That may not sound like a big difference, but the LX feels like a bespoke luxury vehicle, as it should for its large price tag. The GX is more of a utility vehicle and truck-like than the soft, comfortable and majestic character of the LX.

Now, here is our Verdict:

So, if you have the means to afford the Lexus LX, it is the one to buy. It has the luxury, the more upscale interior design, and high-end features to warrant but it comes at a huge cost.

Otherwise, the Lexus GX’s standard seven-passenger layout and more affordable price tag make it the better option. In addition, it has more than enough luxury for regular use.

So, which one should you buy: Lexus GX or Lexus LX?
