18 Jan 2022 | Rasmus Larsen | After bringing the 'Fine Tune Dark Areas' function to 2021 and 2020 OLED TVs, LG is expanding it to 2019 OLED models. The new firmware also lets you hide the no signal box.2019 LG OLED update
Current OLED TVs suffer from raised blacks and flicker in VRR mode. LG is trying to mitigate the issue by letting users fine-tune dark areas in the picture. Meanwhile, involved parties are working on a permanent fix – which may work only on new TVs. The 'Fine Tune Dark Areas' function lets the user manually adjust black levels in VRR mode. After installing the firmware, you can find 'Fine Tune Dark Areas' from Picture -> Additional Settings. VRR is currently supported by PCs and Xbox. Sony has yet to bring VRR support to PlayStation 5.Activating VRR on Xbox can raise blacks on both LCD and OLED TVs (LG GX in the photo). In Gears 5 you can use this scene from the first chapter: Activate/deactivate VRR on Xbox to see the difference. Photo: FlatpanelsHD
The new firmware (05.20.07 in Europe, 05.25.07 in North America) is available for LG's 2019 OLED models C9, E9 and W9. The firmware also adds an option to hide the no signal box by pressing the red button on remote so you can enjoy the pretty pictures on the screen instead. Lastly, the update lets users in some regions choose between the Google Assistant and LG ThinQ voice assistants. The firmware can be downloaded and installed now through the TV's built-in update function.Applicable LG 2019 OLED models
