What is the difference between the Logitech G29 vs G923?

Logitech released the G29 and G920 racing wheels way back in 2015. Then, in 2020, Logitech upgraded the G29 and G920 and replaced them with the Logitech G923. You can still buy the Logitech G29 and G920 at a reduced price, but the G923 is the most up-to-date of the three racing wheels.

Logitech has long been one of the very best brands at making budget racing wheels. They have a long line of successful racing wheels, from the G27 to the older G25. In August 2020, they released the latest in a long line of racing wheels, the G923 which is the successor to the G29 and G920.

I began my sim racing career using the older Logitech G27 before spending a lot of time with the G29 and the G923. In this guide, I’m going to compare the G29 and G923 to see which racing wheel is better. The G923 may have age on its side, along with a few new party tricks, but is it worth upgrading to in 2024 if you already own a G29?

Introducing the Logitech Racing Wheel range

The Logitech G29 was the next generation of racing wheel following the popular G27 by Logitech. To confuse things a little, Logitech also released the G920 racing wheel at the same time. While both the G29 and G920 look very similar and perform almost identically, there is a difference. The Logitech G920 is an Xbox-compatible racing wheel, while the G29 is a PlayStation-compatible wheel.

Then, in 2020, Logitech unveiled its most recent racing wheel, the G923. This new sim racing wheel utilised the same design principles as the G29 while adding a few new features and upgrades internally. It isn’t an entirely new racing wheel. Instead, I view it as an upgraded version of the G29 and G920 with some improved features.

Below is a quick overview of each of the three Logitech racing wheels that are currently available.

Logitech G923 vs G29 vs G920

As I mentioned, the Logitech G923 is an upgraded version of the Logitech G29 and G920 wheels that were released five years earlier. The upgraded wheel introduced a few new features and was a slightly more well-rounded racing wheel than the older models.

The older Logitech G29 and G920 both differed in appearance from one another. I thought this was a strange choice given that both wheels were almost identical. However, this is due to the lack of functionality with the Xbox-compatible G920.

Apart from this difference, which resulted in removing the rotational encoder on the G920, the G29 produced slightly less peak torque than the G920. This isn’t noticeable during gameplay, and having raced with all three wheels, I couldn’t tell them apart from the peak performance alone.

The Logitech G923 borrows its design more from the G29 rather than the G920 but makes a few of its own changes. It also has the same slightly higher peak torque performance as the G920 at 2.2Nm.

Below is a rundown of the specifications and differences between each of the three Logitech wheels. The official force feedback strength figure does differ according to Logitech. However, having used all three of these racing wheels for many years, I couldn’t notice any real difference in performance aside from the new TrueForce feature which I’ll touch on later in this comparison.

It is worth stating that although the RRP of the older Logitech G29 and G920 is £349/$299, it can often be found at a much lower price than this at retailers such as Amazon and it is often on sale.

Logitech G923 vs G29

When I switch between each racing wheel and start to compare the newer Logitech G923 to the older G29 racing wheel, my initial impressions are that they look very similar. Both the G923 and G29 incorporate the same external design with all buttons, rotary encoders, shifters and inputs in the same position.

Both racing wheels feature a prominent button in the lower right of the steering wheel with an interactive dial surrounding it. This is one feature that was missing on the Xbox-compatible G920. There is also a plus and minus button on the lower left of the steering wheel, which is the same across the G29 and G923 wheels.

Are there any differences in the design of the G29 and G923?

While all button placements are the same on the Logitech G923 and G29, the newer racing wheel does have a new colour scheme, which I rather like. The updated racing wheel has an all-black finish across the steering wheel and all buttons. I presume this was done to differentiate between the two racing wheels a bit more easily.

One small aesthetic change that I did notice is the logo at the center of both wheels. On the older G29 wheel that I have in my studio, the center of the steering wheel shows the PlayStation logo. Whilst I noticed that on the newer G923, this has been replaced by the Logitech logo.

Do both Logitech wheels perform the same?

On paper, the Logitech G923 produces ever-so-slightly better force feedback strength than the G29 at 2.2Nm compared to 2.1Nm. However, during my testing of both racing wheels, I really couldn’t tell any difference in the overall force feedback strength. The real party trick that I immediately noticed is the new technology in the g923 called TrueForce.

TrueForce is the name given to a vibration technology that lets the G923 translate in-game audio into rumbles and vibrations. I could feel the new TrueForce vibrations in the steering wheel while racing, and they do add a layer of immersion that isn’t found on the older G29 racing wheel.

TrueForce lets you feel elements such as your car’s revs and tyre slip which add to the overall level of immersion. I would say this is a big enough reason to consider upgrading.

It is worth noting that I often still use my Logitech G923, especially when testing new sim rigs and games. IT is my go-to budget racing wheel because it has been so reliable and performs incredibly well within its price range.

Logitech G923 vs G920

When it comes to comparing the Logitech G923 vs the Xbox-compatible G920, there are a few more differences between the old and new wheels. The Logitech G920 doesn’t include the same plus and minus buttons or the rotary dial that are found on both the G29 and G923.

These were removed from the G920 due to these inputs not being functional on Xbox consoles. Xbox utilises a much stricter SDK (Software Development Kit) which means it is much harder to make additional inputs function correctly on peripherals. This is explained well by sim racing brand Fanatec who face the same issue, and is why Xbox steering wheels often have less inputs than PlayStation versions.

Due to this issue, Logitech removed these extra inputs as they would serve no function. However, during the development of the newer G923 racing wheel, Logitech found a way to make these additional inputs functional.

This is why the Xbox version of the G923 racing wheel has these inputs added back in. I am glad to see the return of these features as the additional rotary dial and buttons make controlling your car in game much easier.

Much like the G29, the older G920 also doesn’t use the new TrueForce technology. This means the newer G923 is a rather big step up in terms of overall immersion whilst sim racing compared to both the G29 and G920.

Looking at each wheel in more detail

As mentioned, I have spent a considerable amount of time with each of these three Logitech racing wheels over the past ten years. The G29 was actually one of my favourite racing wheels ever due to the fond memories I have of my time playing games such as Gran Turismo 6.

I want to look at each of the three racing wheels in a bit more detail, giving you an overview of each one. I’ll look at the design, performance and what makes each wheel unique.

Logitech G29

I want to now look at each Logitech racing wheel in a bit more detail to see how each one compares. First up is the PlayStation-compatible Logitech G29.

The Logitech G29 is the racing wheel that replaced the outdated G27. It’s based on the same underpinnings as that wheel, but has a much-improved design, build quality, and functionality compared to the G27. The G29 is compatible with PlayStation consoles and PCs but not with Xbox consoles.

Its design consists of a metal face plate, with a hand-stitched leather wheel. There are a series of buttons on the front of the wheel, all allowing you to control your PlayStation console without requiring a controller.

The design features a bright red rotary dial, along with blue buttons. This design flare is one of the main differences between the G29 and G923, as the newer G923 opts for an all-black design.

On the front of the wheel are a series of rev lights, a bright red rotary dial and some plus and minus buttons. These all allow you to control certain aspects of your car while driving and are fully customisable. For example, you can increase and decrease your brake bias using the plus and minus buttons, and adjust your traction control using the red wheel.

These inputs can normally be assigned in game, meaning you can jump into Gran Turismo 7’s settings for example and set these inputs to control various aspects of the game,

Overall and not surprisingly, the Logitechj G29 was a worthy upgrade over the much older G27. It introduces better internal technology and a completely revised design which looks more modern and much fresher.

Logitech G920

The Logitech G920 was released during the same year as the G29, and is essentially the Xbox-compatible variant of the G29. Inside, it’s pretty much the exact same racing wheel. It behaves the same, has the same motor and maximum power, and the same pedals. But strangely, on the outside, the G920 is a rather different looking wheel.

Due to the limitations of Xbox peripherals, some functionality on the G29 doesn’t work. This means some aspects of the G29 design weren’t needed in the design of the G920.

A few things that were removed from the G29 for the G920 include the red rotary dial, the plus and minus buttons and the rev lights. None of these features appears on the G920. This is a shame, as both products are priced exactly the same. This makes the G920 look a lot different compared to the G923.

It also makes the G920 a slightly inferior racing wheel when compared to the G29. However, all of this is out of the control of Logitech, as it is the Xbox architecture that is stopping these additional functions from working.

Which is the better racing wheel between the Logitech G29 vs G920?

In my experience, the Logitech G29 is the better racing wheel when compared to the G920. This is mainly due to the extra features and functionality that were removed from the G920. The rotary dial, in particular, is a big commission from the G920 and adds a lot of immersion to the G29.

Of course, if you only own an Xbox console and sim race exclusively on that, then you can’t buy a Logitech G29 due to lack of compatibility. This means Xbox sim racers have to either use the Logitech G920 or find an alternative budget racing wheel.

In the performance category, both the Logitech G29 and G920 are identical. So, if performance is a big part of your overall buying decision, both wheels are just as good as each other!

I personally like as much control as possible when using a racing wheel. That means that the more inputs available for me to configure and use, the better. In this regard, the G29 wins due to its extra functionality.

Both the Logitech G29 and G920 are still available to purchase, so you can still buy either of these racing wheels. However, the newer and upgraded Logitech G923 incorporates everything that both of these wheels have to offer, superseding both as the best budget Logitech racing wheel.

Logitech G923

The newer Logitech G923 was released in 2020. It introduced a few upgrades to the tried-and-tested Logitech formula and fixed a few issues with the Xbox-compatible G920.

To start with, when you take the Logitech G923 out of the box for the first time, you’ll notice that both the Xbox-compatible version and the PlayStation-compatible version look identical to one another.

As the head of simulation at Logitech, Richard Neville, mentioned in this Reddit post, there are two versions of the G923 available to buy. This is due to Xbox and PlayStation’s different peripheral requirements. However, both wheels look and perform identically with both versions of the G923 having the same force feedback strength.

The new Logitech G923 looks very similar to the older G29, and I believe it took all of its design cues from that wheel. It features the same design, same inputs, and the rev lights and rotary dial are all the same. The big news on the design front is that all of these features are now available to Xbox gamers.

Logitech managed to work around the limitations of the Xbox console and found a way to include the rotary dial, the rev lights and the plus and minus buttons. All of these inputs work perfectly on Xbox consoles and can be configured in-game.

Other than this and a coat of black paint, the Logitech G923 looks identical to the G29. What is really new can’t be seen from the outside.

How does TrueForce affect force feedback and gameplay?

With the introduction of the G923, Logitech introduced a new function called Trueforce. This is essentially a vibration technology that is inside the outer wheel rim. It vibrates completely independently of the force feedback-generating motor.

Trueforce is designed to bring extra immersion to racing with a G923 and in my experience, it achieves exactly this. It uses vibrations in the steering wheel itself to simulate the vibrations that you feel when sitting in a real car. The more you rev your engine, the stronger the vibrations, much like in a real-world car.

After a few years of racing with the G923, I can agree that the TrueForce technology works well and does add immersion to the overall driving experience. It certainly isn’t a game-changer, but it is a nice additional feature.

I was surprised when I first unboxed my Logitech G923 that around the back of the steering wheel are also a couple of extra paddles that can be used as a dual-clutch. This is a very good inclusion which allows you to program and master your standing starts.

Pedal upgrades

You will also find upgrades to the pedals on the newer Logitech G923. Many sim racers and users, including myself, complained that the pedals on the older G29 and G920 were not stiff enough. In my experience, and other sim racers agree, the older brake pedal was too light and easy to press, which isn’t very realistic.

There is a range of brake mods available from third parties, including 3D printable mods that stiffen the brake. I found that these mods went some way towards improving the brake pedal on the older Logitech racing wheels.

Thankfully, Logitech took this feedback on board, and the brake pedal on the newer G923 wheel is much stiffer than the G29. This offers much more realistic braking, allowing us to trail brake with much consistency. When compared to the older G29 and G920 brake pedals, the new G923 brake pedal is a vast improvement and is an often overlooked upgrade between the older and newer wheels.

Compatibility of each racing wheel

Compatibility isn’t a huge issue with the newer Logitech G923. You simply choose which console version you would like, and your G923 will work out of the box. The wheel has the same look and functionality no matter which console you opt to sim race one.

I have the Xbox-compatible version of the Logitech G923, and this allows me to sim race on both Xbox consoles and on a PC aswell. I can also confirm that all of the inputs work with Xbox consoles this time around.

There is, however, a bigger issue with compatibility between the older racing wheels. The G920 is the Xbox compatible racing wheel and has much less functionality compared to the G29, as I’ve mentioned a few times in this Logitech comparison guide.

I found this rather frustrating, as both racing wheels cost the same money. However, you essentially receive a less capable and categorically worse product when buying the Xbox-compatible G920 compared to the G29.

Price difference between G29 vs G920 vs G923

The Logitech G923 is the same price no matter which console compatible version you opt for. And this is the same between the G29 and G920. However, the G29 and G920 are priced slightly lower than the G923.

You can still purchase both of the older wheels, the Logitech G29 and G920, and the RRP is, on average, around £20 less than that of the G923.

Should you buy a Logitech G923?

If you are looking to buy a great entry-level racing wheel for either PS5 or Xbox, I would highly recommend a Logitech G923, especially compared to the older G29 and G920.

My time with all three racing wheels over the past ten years has been positive. Each of the wheels is a very good budget-friendly wheel for anyone looking to start sim racing for the first time.

The introduction of the newer Logitech G923 does offer enough upgrades over the older racing wheels to warrant the £20 price increase. The addition of a dual clutch system along with the inclusion of Trueforce and an upgraded brake pedal makes the G923 a more well-rounded wheel.

If you currently do not own a racing wheel, and are considering one of these three Logitech wheels. I would definitely recommend opting for the newer and more capable Logitech G923.
