#1 · Oct 15, 2018 Looking at 2011 and up 535's and 550's. I am looking to buy in the next few months. Not new to BMW, but have been out for awhile. I am looking at a weekender/trip car for the family. We have a beast for the winter, so thats not a concern. I have my daily wrapped up, but its boring. Issues with fuel injectors, waste gates, HPFP, rattles on the new single turbo setup? Anything crazy with the 550 twins? Honestly, given the track record of the earlier 335/535 issues, I'd like to hear some input before I narrow down my search. I want to know about the "surprises" people have run into. Any floating back seats due to another BMW sunroof design flaw, wet trunks with fried electronics, etc.??? All stuff I'd like to avoid in my next purchase. Thanks in advance! Sort by Oldest first Oldest first Newest first Most reactions #2 · Oct 15, 2018 Please avoid the 550. Look at the thread that has been flagged on the front page of the forum about the engines on it. If you were to get a 550 get a newer one say 2014-2018 #3 · Oct 15, 2018 Was wondering if that was still relevant and/or an issue. Thank you. #6 · Oct 15, 2018 For 2011-2013 550s, yes its still relevant / an issue. Dont consider a 2011-2013 550 at all, unless you are going to work on it yourself. 0 Reply #4 · Oct 15, 2018 If you know BMW, you know the I6 engines are their bread and butter. For a highway cruiser long trip type of car it's hard to beat the 535. I don;t believe there were significant changes to the 535 during the F10 run so any of them would be good. Easy enough to identify the typical failures (HPFP, etc) and verify the service history on whatever you're looking at. For a balls-to-the-wall fun car the 550 takes it a step further, though there are trade-offs (for a highway cruiser, fuel mileage is one of them). As mentioned the N63TU introduced in 2014 would be my suggested starting point for a 550. Earlier models MAY be fine but why risk it? Only down'side to the F10 as a long distance cruiser IMO is the lack of space for a spare tire. The run-flats work well enough to get you off the highway but the only way to get a spare in the car is to give up a good portion of the trunk. Minor grievance, but just something to be aware of. #5 · Oct 15, 2018 For road trips, put a spare on the roof rack...not pretty but functional Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk 0 Reply #7 · Oct 16, 2018 I love my '12 550. I could never back to a 6 cylinder. Don't believe all the hype, there are some sweet 550's out there. Good luck Sent from my LG-H872 using Bimmerfest mobile app #8 · Oct 16, 2018 Everyones risk tolerance is different, this is true, but I would not call a 76 page thread, an official "customer care package" (dont call it a recall) on 2011-2013 V8s, AND a current stop sale on some V8 equipped new BMWs as "hype". #9 · Oct 16, 2018 Thanks for the input fellas. You've given me some points to consider. Feel free to make more! #10 · Oct 16, 2018 I love my 2014 550i. Spent a long time waiting for the right car with the right combo of options. I only considered 2014 and later for the technical upgrades to the engine - and the extra power. It***8217;s a blast to put the hammer down, and also to totally comfy and chill to just set the radar cruise and eat up miles. I came from an 09 335i convertible - this is my sensible family car now lol - the twin turbo straight six was sweet, but this is next level. I am a chicken, and useless at wrenching these days - so I did get a 5-year bumper to bumper 100,000 mile warranty though. Just in case lol. My wife has a 2013 528 - and it***8217;s also a great comfy cruiser. #27 · Nov 14, 2018

I agree. We have 2 straight sixes, an N54 3 series and a B58 2 series. I still prefer the 550 most of the time as it's just straight roads around here. The N63TU has an extended HPFP warranty from BMW and California's emissions warranty goes beyond factory as well. If you really want peace of mind, Route66. 0 Reply #11 · Oct 16, 2018 I was dead set on getting the 550 until I read about the V8 troubles. I bought the 535 (we have 2 actually) and couldn't be happier. Just got back from an over 5600 trip and the only issue is the "replace brake fluid" alert popped-up and I averaged over 32mpg (hand calculated). I've never felt lacking for power. #12 · Oct 16, 2018 You don’t mention your other rides but - I’ll just come out and say it - the F10 in any guise is not really the car if boring is something you don’t want. Especially if you’ve had time behind anything in the E generation. But with two ‘boring’ choices, I’d be taking more torque. Sent from my iPhone using Bimmerfest #13 · Oct 16, 2018 '11 535 w/ xdrive here, Stable is the word I would use. Minor fixes based on miles and all is well. 90k and Im just now needing tie rods. I did have to do the front axles but it's xdrive so... Rwd wouldn't need to do that. You'll beat enough cars on the road that the 550 won't matter unless you're into being first in a crowd of ticket payers. #14 · Oct 16, 2018 The 550i is just so quick and responsive I don't know that I could enjoy driving a BMW otherwise. Getting around slower cars in a flash with just a quick blip of the throttle and accompanied by magnificent V8 sounds is an experience that can be had no other way. #15 · Oct 16, 2018 Ive been looking into the 535 and the 550 2015 and up for sometime now. Currently I'm waiting on the 2016 lease returns to pick up a deal on the last year of the F10 model. However I'm still trying to decide on the 535 or the 550 M Sport. so far from my research the pros and cons for each as follows for the 2015 and up. -535i price difference is about $6-$9k lower than the 550i. -MPG for the 535i is of course better than the 550i. -Majority of the 550i M Sports (if not all of them) are fully loaded with all the options that BMW provides. -The 535i when looking into packages, it will take you sometime to find exactly everything you're looking for there are a lot of mismatch packages out there. -POWER, of course the 550i is a beast compared to the 535i. not to mention there are tunes out there (JB4 etc) that can make that go even further for both vehicles. The price you pay for that 550i power is of course GAS/MPG. -Minor cosmetic changes in the 550i and 535i. Only thing I've noticed between the 2 is at the rear exterior. Wider exhaust tips on the 550i compared to the 535i's single exhaust tip. the diffuser is also more open for the wider exhausts tips. (I'm a big fan of the 550i's exhaust). -Maintenance this area I have not really looked into. If I go with the 550i I plan on getting route66 warranty when manufacturer warranty runs out so that I may not have to worry about this at all. $3k for peace of mind is well worth it. If I go with the 535i I may not worry that much about warranty as I plan on doing majority of the work myself as I did with my e60 535i. I dont feel confident to do that with the 550i. overall for me the question comes down to will I ever use the 550i's power in LA's traffic and justify the price difference between the 2 models. Although I would hands down without a doubt go with the 550i (poor mans M5) the limit of actually being able to use it's power is holding me back. #16 · Oct 17, 2018 All this makes a lot of sense and well thought out. While things like this are a personal decision for everyone, years ago I did the sensible thing and went with a beautiful M54 530 E39. I loved that car and did various engine performance mods but I couldn't stop thinking about the 540 and ultimately replaced it. Knowing you have the power although you don't always use it is a better place to be than knowing you don't and wishing you did in some rare occasions. When my 330 lease is up I'm looking into getting a F10 550i, after speaking to my SA and some of the BMW techs, I'll be getting either 2013-14 550i.

76 page thread is not HYPE.... #20 · Oct 18, 2018 More hype... All BMW's have issues eventually. Sent from my LG-H872 using Bimmerfest mobile app #28 · Nov 14, 2018 It's because of sophistication and added engineering. Complexity is the enemy of reliability. That's why there are Hondas and Toyotas. 0 Reply #25 · Nov 2, 2018 @eagle11 what did your sa and techs say about f10? Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk #26 · Nov 4, 2018 Just the typical stuff about the early 550's, they had a lot of problems, of course I couldn't get a straight answer out of them, but was told to get a 2014 or newer 550i. 0 Reply #29 · Jun 9, 2023 I own a 2013 535xi with 86k miles I think it's an M sport not too sure it does have the M symbol on the screen when I cut the car on and on the bottom of the door panels when you open the door. Only owned it for about 2 days so far and I'm loving it. Definitely fast (only drove in comfort mode) and comes with more things than I expected for the year that I got like backup camera, Bluetooth audio, collision sensors, Heads up display, navigation and heated seats. I originally was looking for an E or CLS class Benz but the Benz that I found at the dealers around me had waaaay too many miles so I stumbled upon this 535xi only thing that I see kinda funny is that the oil temperature is always high like around 245-248ish. In 2 days I'll be taking it in for an maintenance check and next week I'm taking it for an performance tune(I'm so excited) hopefully I can get a decent amount of extra HP to stay in competition with all these Q50s, Q60s, Skatpacks and SRTs around me This is an older thread, you may not receive a response, and could be reviving an old thread.
