Splat S I am a landscape/excavation contractor in the northeast. I perform a lot of snow removal services also. I have several dump trucks rated at 18,000 GVW. I have found the Mitsubishi FH with a 114" wheelbase to be the best plow vehicle I have ever used. After purchasing an excavator and doing larger jobs, I am in the market to purchase a 33,000 GVW dump truck. Due to my positive experience with the cabovers I have now, I'm looking in that direction. The only cabover I can find that has the HP and torque that I need is GMC/Chevy/Isuzu with the Duramax. My logic is that I can get a truck with a 128" WB with a 12' dump body as opposed to a conventional with a 152" WB with a 10' body. I have almost never seen 33,000 GVW cabovers used in dump truck applications and looking for feedback. For those of you who run a T7500 or T8500 in other applications, your feedback would be greatly appreciated. Ron #1 · Nov 6, 2005 I am a landscape/excavation contractor in the northeast. Take a look at them in a picture and tell me which one has a million more parts.... stick with Catapillar, you can't go wrong. Dmax will cost loads more to fix. #3 · Nov 7, 2005 Thanks Dan. I can't agree with you more, however they don't offer the Cat in the T-series trucks. I feel lucky being able to get a cab over with the specs of the cat. Is the Duramax so inferior that I should bag the whole idea of a cabover? When I get a little more time, I'll check in the Duamax forum. #4 · Nov 7, 2005 Hey Dan. Are you planning on plowing with your new Kodiak? #5 · Nov 8, 2005 No, save that for the 3/4 and 1 ton.... going to pull the excavator and tractors #6 · Nov 9, 2005 The B10 engine life for the C7 CAT is unpublished. The standard is simply too ridged for CAT to meet, so they publish the B50 engine life for the CAT C7 at 350,000 miles. The B10 engine life for the 7800 is 350,000 miles, the engine is quieter, doesn't vibrate as much. This means that 40% more CAT C7 engines will fail in the first 350,000 miles than will Duramax 7800 engines. Why in the heck would you want to purchase an engine that is noiser, vibrates more and will not last as long.....AND in reality costs about the same to repair? Are you "Stuck on Stupid?" #7 · Nov 9, 2005 I don't plow snow, but I know something about dump trucks. Front axle loading on cabover dumps can get excessive in a hurry. Front axle is closer to the load. This is one reason you don't see 10 yd. dumps on cabover chassis too often. Nonetheless, a T-8500 might make a good truck for plowing. You said 33,000# GVW, so I assume you are talking about the single rear axle T-8500. To make a 33,000# GVW dump on a T-8500 chassis worthwhile, I would say you would need some wide front tires and a heavy front axle. Would wide flotation type front tires be a problem plowing? As for Cat C-7 vs. Duramax 7800, I think I would go with the Duramax. Any engine problems could be handled by your GM dealer. It's a really smooth running engine, too. #8 · Nov 10, 2005 Thanks for the feedback fellas! Your comments about the Duramax and Cat are very interesting. In my partuclar case, I don't have a choice due to the Cat not being offered in the T-Series. However, I find your confidence in the Duramax interesting and reassuring. I am aware of the weight distribution of a cabover. I'm planning on going with 12K front and 21K rear. I hope 12K will be enough for the front. I'm remotely entertaining the thought of going with 14K front and 23K rear, however the FET tax -:t is tough to swallow. Insert Quotes Post Reply
