Skycaptain S First up I would like to say I wouldn't be unhappy with either choice of the the 2 cars as my next daily driver. It's time for a new daily for the next 3+ years and will be clocking up about 20,000km a year, mostly longer distance country driving and once every 2 months I will be attending a track day. Prefer the auto box this time around, I love manual but not for a daily. It started with having a test drive of a used m235i and I was hooked, wow that engine and super smooth gearbox is fantastic, the car is agile and made me smile. So much torque down low and instant. If I had to describe it in one word I would say Fun. One thing I didn't like was the steering feel, it felt slightly unenvolving. So after sharing my test drive experience with a family member he offered me his M3e92 competition pack for drive. I've driven it once prior but was a very short stint, this time I had opportunity to explore and understand its split personality a little better. Around town in its softest and relaxing settings the car is comfortable and lazy, I still found it much firmer in its relaxed settings compared to the m235i in sport/sport+, although firm it's not uncomfortable, it's just absorbs bumps and gets on with it, it's just how I like it. In it's more aggressive m mode the car is an animal, that v8 engine is incredibley smooth and so fast once in the upper rev range. The handling to me is spot on, its compliant and flat and feels planted, gave me lots of confidence and the steering wheel gives much better feedback but is also heavier around town. After this drive it pointed out the differences between the two, but also confused me a little, so back to the dealership to try another m235i. This time around I noticed the suspension felt floaty or perhaps soft is the word to use compared to the m3. The front end just felt a little bouncy, someone mentioned the word I'm looking for was underdamped? Anyhow the torque down low and use around lower gears and streets make the m235i so much easier to drive, that torque is always there. The m3 has torque as well, just not like the m235i down low, you have have to adjust your driving style in the m3. Also the m3 has more room which is a little nicer for my left leg which is up against the centre consol in then m235i. So this leaves me with factoring up ownership costs and modifications to the m240i, I say m240i as I looked at the used prices on the 235 and I can get amazing deals which work out better on the m240i, and it's got more torque and all the new tech as standard in the new model. If I was to buy it I need to factor in a diff, no buts about it, it needs one for the my intended use. The suspension is fine for everyday driving, it's just now that I know how good the m3 is, I would have to consider kw's hoping to achieve a similar feel. So this is now getting into very similar price ranges. New m240i in Australia I can get for 66-67k drive away with free 4 year servicing and 3 years warranty, the diff costs little over 4k, and suspension if I do go down this route will cost 5000k. So we are now at 75-76k, which buys you roughly a 2011-2012 model m3 with a year warranty BMW approved or none if elsewhere, with about 40-50,000km on the clock. Ideally the m2 would be the way I'd go but money is big factor here, it's about 95-100k drive away as no discounts currently. Anyhow those that have also considered one over the other, test driven, or have gone through a similar process, or understand the costs associated with the m3, please share so I can make up my mind as I need some direction. Appreciate the feedback. #1 · Jun 23, 2017 First up I would like to say I wouldn't be unhappy with either choice of the the 2 cars as my next daily driver.
