reubenfb92 Hi, I'm looking to purchase a 330d. I have previously owned an m47 and now own an n47 which has had swirl flap, Egr and Dpf deletes. runs absolutely fine passes mots past 3 years and no complaints with it at all. I've seen some cheap m57's going and i was wondering what better m57 or n47. Reason why I'm asking is because I was told m57 engine has the timing chain at the front and n57 at the back (I knew that). My problem is I basically want a 3ltr engine instead of 2 so my dilemma is I don't want be spending ££££££ on a potentially poorly looked after n57 and end up having to do get the timing chain changed which will be more costly because its at the back and it practically an engine job. when i do purchase the 330d Egr, Swirl flaps, Dpf will be coming out. I'll Be having a high flow cat and a wave track lsd and hybrid turbo installed. I can get most of this done for not too much but would prefer m57 if its a stronger more reliable engine than n57. I can face lift the m57 and interior doesn't bother me because ive done my car many times with head units, alcantara on the headliner, pillars, boot trim etc... my main question is regarding the engine. Which is better.. M57 or N57? #1 · Jan 3, 2022 Hi, I'm looking to purchase a 330d. Which is better.. M57 or N57? Sort by Oldest first Oldest first Newest first Most reactions #2 · Jan 3, 2022 In terms of better I have no idea, I had a 5 series with m57 and a 3 with n57. Both were equally good in my opinion I never had any real Issues other than the typical glow plugs and cam cover oil leaks. like you say n57 has chain set up like n47 however failure isn’t anywhere near as common, school of thought is increased oil capacity keeps it healthier. Having said that a timing chain issue wouldn’t put me off as it’s not a bad job to do. M57 does have chain at the front but I have known them to have issues but it is rare. M57 is in pre lci but there are some very late pre lci cars with n57 that also had cic I drive,if it was me I would look for one of them as I prefer the style of pre lci obviously that’s personal preference. I had one until last year cracking car to be fair. Only thing that let it down was the manual gearbox. That had done 150k of trouble free miles engine wise,no signs of any chain issues and running sweet as a nut with a slight remap on it. #3 · Jan 4, 2022 my e90 330d m57 manual, now has 163 k on it,still going strong and remapped, also have a 640d n57,,,again great,,but n57 are showing some bottom end failure which inturn takes crank out,,mnainly due to long lifec servicing,,according to indy i use who is ex bmw,i also have had an e46 330d m57 and an e92 335d m57,again great cars with never any engine trouble #4 · Jan 4, 2022 I have driven both lci and pre Lci 330d and the N57 is quieter, smoother, more economical and the tax is cheaper. I do like the noise of the M57 though. As Rasa has said, the chain issue is nowhere near as prevelant on the N57 as it is on the N47. I have seen reports of chain failure on them though. Most probably due to poor oil change history and abuse. M57 chain is at the front but you'll never need to touch it, it should out last the car. If you're going to tune it I'd probably go with the N57. Darkside Developments reliably tune them to over 400bhp with a hybrid turbo. Insert Quotes Post Reply
