M6 Vs. M5. Sound Differences Before I Buy? - M5Board

mrmojom3 M I had an E63 M6. LOVED the sound. Had an x pipe with tubi sport mufflers. Even stock it was pretty good. Went to an M3 but REALLY miss the V10 so looking for an E60 M5. Drove an 07 the other day, and it sounded "muted" vs. my V10 M6. I know I can (and will) add an exhaust setup. My question - does the M5 and M6 have identical sound? I was looking for an M5 for the 4 door practicality, however the M6 sound is what I'm after. Anybody know for sure? Thanks. #1 · Jul 15, 2015 I had an E63 M6. LOVED the sound. However, every aspect of the engines, headers, cats, and engine management are identical. If you go for an aftermarket setup, the sound will be identical between them. #3 · Jul 15, 2015 I assumed both should sound the same. However the cabin noise in the M6 sounded more aggressive. I will be adding an aftermarket x pipe and exhaust so probably no difference then. #4 · Jul 15, 2015 Interior sound would be relative to how aggressive the exhaust is set up. M6 stock is louder than M5. #7 · Jul 15, 2015 This would make sense for the difference in sound... so question then. If I added an identical exhaust setup to the M5 as I had in the M6 would there still be a difference in sound? Something about the M6 sounded a bit more exotic than the M5 I drove recently. So the M6 will sound better with the same mods. #9 · Jul 16, 2015 I found out that if I drive around with the rear seats down in my m5 it sounds better than with the rear seats up. Try it if you have the folding seats! #10 · Sep 4, 2015 At the end of the day... if I drop an e-race to an M5 it will sound pretty close to the e-race I had in my M6 correct? I understand the M6 might be slightly louder than the M5, but pretty small. Right? #11 · Nov 15, 2015 Well, so I finally picked up an M5. 06 with 13k miles, perfect condition. Yes, the sound in the M5 is way quitter than the M6. M6 is quite a bit louder in the cabin, the M5 is very muted. M6 is quite a bit more aggressive. Cannot believe how quiet the M5 is. Now on to figure out the exhaust add on. Thinking RPI section 3 but don't want any drone. Insert Quotes Post Reply
