The country is bounded in the west by the Red Sea, in the southwest by the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait, and in the south by the Gulf of Aden. Yemen borders Saudi Arabia in the north and Oman in the east. Due to the control of Sana'a by Houthi rebels, the Yemeni seat of government moved first to Aden and in 2019 to Seiyun (Saywun) in the Hadhramaut region in the center of the country. Spoken language is Yemeni Arabic. Photo: Ibrahem Qasim Geography of Yemen Coastal plain Tihamah Yemen lies in the most mountainous part of the Arabian Peninsula. Between the Red Sea and the mountains is the Tihamah, a 30 to 50 kilometers wide semi-desert coastal plain. The coastal strip is part of a fog desert eco-region that stretches along the western coast of the Arabian Peninsula from the Gulf of Aqaba to Bab el Mandeb strait. Mountains Western Highlands In the west, the rugged terrain of the Western Highlands and their foothills dominates the country. The relatively fertile highlands are a part of the Sarawat Mountains (also called the Asir Mountains in Saudi Arabia). Situated within the highlands is Jabal Haraz, a mountainous region west of the country's capital, Sana'a. The Haraz region is famous for its dramatic topography, terraced landscapes, and historic villages. Jabal An-Nabi Shu'ayb, at 3,666 m (12,028 ft), the tallest mountain in Yemen, is located there.

Photo: Rod Waddington Central Highlands The central highlands are a plateau of about 2,000-3,200 meters, featuring rolling hills, small mountains, and some prominent peaks. The central highlands are drier than the western mountains, but still receive enough rain in wet years for extensive cropping. Mahra Mountains In the southeast of Yemen are the Mahra Mountains (Jabal Mahra) with elevations of up to 1,300 m. Ramlat al-Sab`atayn is another desert region in central Yemen and a sparsely populated area. Desert Rub' al-Khali Desert covers most of the northern part of the country. The Rub' al-Khali, one of the largest sand deserts in the world, also known as the Empty Quarter, reaches deep into the northeastern part of the country. Rivers Yemen has no permanent rivers. Wadis A series of Wadis intersperse the highland regions. Wadis are valleys where seasonal rivers form; those rivers run almost completely dry in the summer months. Notable is the Wadi Hadhramaut (Hadramawt) in southern central Yemen. The upper parts of the wadi contain alluvial soil and floodwaters, and the lower part is barren and mostly uninhabited.
