View Full Version : Mesh grille on VZ SS

stealthvz07-04-2005, 07:43 PMCall me blind, but I only just noticed that the SS, SV8, and SV6 all have a mesh grille on the lower air dam on the front bumper, and NOT on the SS ute! WHY? Can anyone shed some light on this? Has anyone fitted one to their ute? How much and where? abi07-04-2005, 08:14 PMYes it is a straght fit. Pop down to your local Holden dealer and order one. SilverB07-04-2005, 08:17 PMI got one that Holden had an attempt to fit but it fell off. They tried to glue it on. The SV6 has proper lugs on the front bar for the grill to clip on to. Unfortunately the SS ute doesn’t seem to have them. I haven’t tried to put it back on as it looks like its easier to take the whole front plastic work off to get it on (as there is no way of easily getting to the inside of the scoop from under the car). I didn't pay for the grill so I unfortunately cannot help you there. alexander07-04-2005, 08:18 PMhey bro i have a vz ss ute the front bumper is different to a sedan the sedan has some sort of clips which r part of the front bumper the utes dont have these clips so there is nothing to fix the grill on i thought that was very tight from holden the grill is worth only $25 and the front bumpers r identicle bar these clips buy the way first time at eastern creek did a 14.3@102mph stock m6 on a hot day u guys think its ok? stealthvz07-04-2005, 09:03 PMbuy the way first time at eastern creek did a 14.3@102mph stock m6 on a hot day u guys think its ok? Good work mate, get yourself a zorst and an edit, and you'll get your self into the 12's! Havn't run mine, but I'd be happy with that! :D Chris5207-04-2005, 10:23 PMCall me blind, but I only just noticed that the SS, SV8, and SV6 all have a mesh grille on the lower air dam on the front bumper, and NOT on the SS ute! WHY? Can anyone shed some light on this? Has anyone fitted one to their ute? How much and where? I stuck/glued mine on with black marine Sikaflex. Problem solved. Cheers Chris. tlr100008-04-2005, 01:01 AMMy vz ss ute came with the lower grille, i guess there was a mix-up at the factory. My mate got one for his ss ute for $20 and said he has to order some clips to hold it in. cyal8r08-04-2005, 04:10 AMIt's the same bumper bar the ute one just doesn't have the clips holden isn't going to spend another $100,000 to make another die just for the ute. Just get the clips. bigdog197108-04-2005, 07:12 AMAnyone know the part no# of the clips??? cashie08-04-2005, 08:32 AMAre the clips a part of the bumper or are they seperate? I purchased my grill for $16 from Holden. bigdog197108-04-2005, 10:52 AMJust orderd the Grill but the Parts dude didnt have a clue about the clips...... So next step??? any advice, I might just follow Chris52's method.. cashie08-04-2005, 12:39 PMJust orderd the Grill but the Parts dude didnt have a clue about the clips...... So next step??? any advice, I might just follow Chris52's method.. When my ute turns up next week, if it is the same as the above (no clips) I will also just use some sikaflex and bog it in. So the parts dude couldn't see anything on the parts drawing/s? Chris5209-04-2005, 03:13 PMWhen my ute turns up next week, if it is the same as the above (no clips) I will also just use some sikaflex and bog it in. So the parts dude couldn't see anything on the parts drawing/s? I had three parts guys looking for the mysterious clips and all came up with zilch.....hence my method. Cheers Chris. bigdog197113-04-2005, 05:39 PMI picked up the grill insert today, and the parts dude even showed me the parts breakdown.... no clip specified!! What is sikaflex is that some sort of silastic?? And whats the easy way to get your arm in there to stick it in, I tried removing the Holden badge/grill under the bonnet lip, but that didnt open up much space at all. Sikaflex 291 adhesive/sealant (marine), about $15 a tube-ouch! Or Selleys wetseal (clear), much cheaper same result. It is imperative that you lightly sand the edges of the grill opening with 120 grit paper, this is where the sealant will be applied and the actual mesh grill slides over this inner edge, ie. hides the sanded edge when fitted. Clean the areas of the grill and front bar opening with general purpose thinners, only where you apply the adhesive/sealant though.Preparation is the key here as mine fell out the first time - rushed it. :bash: Now getting the grill in there and holding it while it sets. First, put a medium sized cable tie through the middle of the grill so it forms a loop that you can use to pull the grill into place - grill holes too small for burly fingers! Now to get the grill in there is the tricky part, this is my best description. Lay the grill on its face, slide either end in first - diagonally the the other end. Now stand the grill up inside the front bar, grab your cable tie handle and pull grill into place for a test fit then push it back inside for the next step. Note, get the grill in before you apply the adhesive/sealant. Now apply the goo too the areas on the grill where the infamous clips should go - sparingly,as this shit is horrible if it gets everywhere. Now carefully pull the grill into place as done in test fit and hold firmly with the cable tie for 24 hours (need food, water and sleeping bag). Just joking  I used a small stick abbout 250 mm long wrapped in a clean rag and tied to the first cable tie. The stick rests vertically against the front bar opening whilst tightened cable ties hold the grill and stick in place. I did this one evening before a day I wasn't using the crewy so the goo had time to go off. When dry, cut hte cable ties, remove stick and voila! I hope this helps. It takes about 10 minutes to do as opposed to the45 mins it took me to type this post.Any way good luck. Cheers Chris. bigdog197114-04-2005, 08:39 AMChris, Unbeliveable  I gave up waiting for a response last night (yes I have no patience) so I got stuck into it. I did almost everything you described even down to the cable tie and the stick  (remember this is all before reading your post!!) Although I did not use sikaflex, I ended up using industrial silicon.... hope it holds. Thanks for the response though, it was a good confirmation that I did it right. Still very strange though :D cashie23-04-2005, 02:09 PMI fitted my grill, you can tell on the ute bars that holden have cut the clips off prior to painting if you feel the edge with your finger.. I had two clips up the top still in place behind the number plate, I used these to hold my grill in. Feels secure with only the two clips, will add sikaflex if it moves.
