Modeling the Release of Gas and Odorous Compounds (H2S, CH3COOH, NH3 and CO2) from Swine SlurryPublished by the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers, St. Joseph, Michigan www.asabe.org
Citation: 2009 Reno, Nevada, June 21 - June 24, 2009 095717.(doi:10.13031/2013.26946) Authors: Victoria Blanes-Vidal, Sven G Sommer, Esmaeil S Nadimi Keywords: slurry, pH, hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, carbon dioxide, emissionSwine slurry is a source of atmospheric pollutants. Emissions of basic and acidic compounds (such as hydrogen sulphide, H2S) from slurry are largely dependent on surface pH. In a storage system, the pH at the surface layers changes over time due to volatilization of ammonia (NH3), carbon dioxide (CO2) and acetic acid (HAc). In this article, a gas emission-pH (GE-pH) coupled model is proposed to describe the release of H2S, NH3, CO2 and HAc from swine slurry. The GE-pH model accounts for changes in pH and concentration of buffer components in the surface layer due to gas volatilization. The model was applied to calculate gas emissions from an undisturbed swine waste lagoon. Modelled pH at the surface layer in the undisturbed slurry lagoon increased over time from 8.0 up to 8.64. Estimated NH3 emissions
