Mortar Components

American Ordnance LLC, operator of the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant, produces a wide variety of explosively loaded components for the 60mm, 81mm, and 120mm Mortar cartridges. All cartridges have a fin assembly, four propellant increments, obturating ring, and an ignition cartridge (with integral primer).

60mm Mortar - High Explosive

American Ordnance LLC, operator of the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant, produces the 60mm Mortar High Explosive cartridges for the U.S. Military and other State Department approved customers.

USE: The 60mm Mortar High Explosive cartridges are designed for use with the M224 60mm Mortar System. These cartridges are designed to be effective against personnel, bunker and light material targets.

DESCRIPTION: The 60mm Mortar High Explosive cartridges are high fragmentation steel projectiles loaded with either conventional or IM compliant explosive. These cartridges features the M734 Multi-Option Fuze, which can be set to function in Proximity, Near Surface Burst, Impact, or Delay mode, and are similar with exception of fuzing.

81mm Mortar - High Explosive & Training Practice

American Ordnance LLC, operator of the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant, produces the 81mm Mortar High Explosive and Training Practice cartridges ammunition for the U.S. Army, Marines and other State Department approved customers.

USE: The 81mm Mortar High Explosive cartridges is a full range training round designed for use with the M252 81mm Mortar System. These cartridges are used against personnel, bunker and light material targets.

DESCRIPTION: The 81mm High Explosive cartridges are high fragmentation steel projectiles loaded with Composition B explosive and are identical with the exception of the fuze. The 81mm Mortar Training Practice cartridge consists of a PD (practice) fuze and an inert loaded projectile body. It is ballistically matched to the High Explosive cartridges and can produce a similar flash, audible sound, and smoke cloud upon impact on the ground.

120mm Mortar - High Explosive and Smoke

American Ordnance LLC, operator of the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant, produces the 120mm Mortar High Explosive and Smoke cartridges ammunition for the U.S. Army and other State Department approved customers.

USE: The 120mm Mortar High Explosive and Smoke (white phosphorous (WP)) rounds were developed for use in the M120 and M121 120mm Mortar System.

DESCRIPTION: The complete round consists of a fuze, propellant charge, fin assembly, ignition cartridge, and a shell body. The shell body is loaded with WP or Composition B filler. The ignition cartridge has a percussion primer and is assembled to the end of the fin assembly. The propellant charge is contained in four horse-shoe shaped felt fiber containers and is assembled around the fin assembly shaft.
