Offense

Las Vegas Raiders

The first offensive playbook recommended by Trey to take a look at is the Las Vegas Raiders. If you follow competitive Madden, you have probably seen top players like JWall, Fancy, and Noah running this playbook due to its effectiveness in the red zone and overall versatility.

A key feature of this playbook is the fact it allows you to come out in popular spread passing formations such as Trips TE and Gun Bunch, and be able to audible straight into great run formations, such as Strong H Wing, I H Slot, I Slot Close, Singleback Wing Flex Close, and Singleback Wing Slot. Having the ability to pass from spread or run from tighter formations with the same personnel on the field will make life very difficult on the opposing defense and provide your attack with great balance.

Seattle Seahawks

If you are a pass-first player and enjoy the Gun Bunch formation, this is the playbook Trey recommends. Some popular plays to check out in this formation include TE Hook, Z Spot, Bunch Trail, and Clearout SE Out.

The Seahawks playbook allows for quick audibles at the line between the Gun Bunch and Bunch TE formations. This is very effective against zone defense because opposing zone drops do not translate well between the 2 formations. Once your opponent has found the right depth to drop their zones to defend against passes in one formation, quickly audibling into the other formation will help exploit newfound gaps in coverage.

Carolina Panthers

The popularity of the Panthers offensive playbook revolves around the C-Route in Double Post out of Gun Bunch Offset. A great feature of this play is its quick hike ability that allows your receiver on the C-Route to pull zones out of position and open up crossers and posts into the newly-created space.

According to Trey, this is the only C-Route that can consistently beat both man and zone coverage. You may also notice your opponent’s defense playing deeper zone drops to counter the route, resulting in more space underneath to attack the flats.

New England Patriots

The value of this offensive playbook comes from many great formations combined with the Trips TE formation 45 Quick Base run play. This is the best shotgun run in the game because the gaps are unshootable (shooting a gap is when a user defender pre-determines a run lane and covers it). Opponents will need to adjust their defensive line in a way that will make it much more difficult for them to rush the QB on passing plays and keep them on their toes.

You can find a lot of popular Bunch plays from previous years of Madden in this playbook, such as Pats Sail, Corner Strike, and 518 Hook. The Patriots and Dolphins offensive playbooks are similar but the Patriots book includes the Gun Y Off Trips Pats and Gun Ace Slot formations that set it apart. Running this book also provides a lot of options to freestyle with other popular formations such as Bunch, Spread, Trips TE, and Split Close.

Defense

46

As many of you may know by now, using safeties as sub linebackers this year is important when defending against the pass. What makes this playbook so special is the fact you can set personnel in 335 Normal and audible into 335 Wide, keeping your safeties at sub LB. In a standard 335 Wide, you will be forced to use outside linebackers with Lurker equipped to defend against the pass. This costs AP and is less effective than coming out in 335 Normal with your safeties at sub LB and calling an audible into 335 Wide. Another benefit to audibling from 335 to 335 Wide is the fact you can now play cross man coverage with a safety and this is only achievable in 335 Wide after the audible.

Additionally, the 46 playbook has the Big Nickel Over G formation, which is easily the best run-stopping formation in this year’s game. This formation looks similar to Nickel Normal but pinching the line will create gaps for your user to shoot through and disrupt the play in the backfield.

Miami Dolphins

The whole goal with this defense is to put your opponent into “must-pass” situations so you can come out in Dime 146, which is easily the best passing defense this year. On first and second down, come out in a formation like 335 Wide with Lurker on your outside linebackers so you can be effective against both the pass and run. Once you force your opponent into an obvious passing down, switch to Dime 146 so you can get up to 8 defensive backs onto the field to help defend against speedy receivers. The reason you do not want to come out in Dime 146 in a situation where your opponent can run is because of the “weak box” effect the game can have when your personnel does not match up with your opponent’s. This effect will make it much more difficult to bring down a ball carrier once they have made it past your first line of defenders and can result in big runs against your defense.

Popular formations included in this playbook are 146, 335 Wide, 245 Double A Gap, and Big Nickel Over G to help defend against obvious rushing downs and red zone situations.
