Outback C70 As the title says, my D5 keeps breaking the longer drive belt (5PK1120), 7 weeks this one lasted, I have checked the pulleys for alignment, the power steering, A/C pulley and the input shaft, the alternator, the idler pulley all turn smoothly, I checked the A/C pressure on the high side it runs around 200psi. The first belt that broke is genuine, the second is a gates micro v, Volvo are 3 hours from here so I had little choice at the time, the only thing I noticed was that the A/C high pressure side seemed to take longer than I would of expected to return to equal pressure after the A/C was turned off. The belt broke cleanly, about 4" each side of the break was stripped of the V's, none of the pulleys have burnt rubber on them, it's like the belt suffered sudden lock up. Maybe the A/C compressor is locking up due the TX valve or drier blocking up? i'm not sure, nothing is obvious and as an Automotive electrician, if it was a customer car, I would not be able to tell the customer what was wrong. Has anyone experienced this? What caused your belt to break? I couldn't see the low port on the suction line from the cabin back to the compressor, can anyone tell me where the low pressure port is for the A/C? Can the TX valve be easily accessed and is it inside the cabin? I was thinking to replace TX and drier, maybe replace the power steering fluid too. #1 · Mar 21, 2018 As the title says, my D5 keeps breaking the longer drive belt (5PK1120), 7 weeks this one lasted, I have checked the pulleys for alignment, the power steering, A/C pulley and the input shaft, the alternator, the idler pulley all turn smoothly, I checked the A/C pressure on the high side it runs around 200psi. It might be the cause of your failures. #3 · Mar 22, 2018 Sudden breaking of the accessory drive belt is something that happens with the five-cylinder D5 engines. Usually because of issues with either the A/C clutch, alternator free wheeling thing or the tensioner. Technically your car, with the D5244T4, has two accessory belts. It's best to use genuine Volvo belts despite the high cost as they at least fail cleanly, aka the way you described. One big problem is that a failed felt can get into a gap in the timing belt cover which will result in a failed timing belt or jumped timing. When were the belts and the tensioner last replaced? #4 · Mar 28, 2018 The car has fairly high K's on it, timing belt was done at scheduled time, I'm not sure of when the drive belts and tensioner was replaced last as I have only owned it a few months and haven't reached next service. I have been repairing vehicles and machinery for 37 years as an Automotive Electrical Specialist, if it was a customer car, I could not tell the customer with any certainty what caused the issue, the Gates micro V belt broke as cleanly as the previous genuine belt. I'm going to order a pair of genuine belts and see how it goes. Thanks. #5 · Feb 12, 2025 Did you work out what was causing it, I have the same problem with a D5 #6 · Feb 13, 2025 Yup, the clutch pulley on the alternator was seized. Show more replies 0 Reply #9 · Feb 23, 2025 I found mine was siezed and replaced it early last week. I got it from Bursons. I'm hoping it is the cause of the breaking belts, I replaced the belt and tensioner the week before, thinking the tensioner was the problem. Then I saw your post. I'm near Wagga, it's on a 2010 s80. Thanks for the offer and the help. #10 · Feb 23, 2025 My XC70 used to be serviced ìn Wagga at a Volvo agent, not a fan of their work. Previous owner used them. #11 · Feb 25, 2025 I have had it serviced at an independent mechanic. Never been to Volvo, maybe they would have noticed it. I have just started changing the oil myself and doing anything simple. Sounds like I have been lucky it hasn't got caught in the timing belt and bent the valves. Insert Quotes Post Reply
