N51 is very similar to the N52 to the point that they are borderline impossible to tell apart. But

Cylinder Head Cover – The cylinder head cover on N52 is made of magnesium while the one on N51 is made of plastic and has integrated crankcase ventilation.

despite this difference, there’s no way to tell these engines apart if you simply pop the hood to take a look. Visually the N51 and N52 are identical. The easiest way to identify which engine you’re dealing with is to take a look at the vehicle emissions plate under the hood. You’ll notice the relevant info on the left-hand side of the plate in the third row. N52 will be marked as LEV, while the N51 carries a SULEV tag. #6 · Oct 18, 2021

One fast way is to check & see if you have an "EAC" Sensor (Environmental Air Catalyst Sensor) attached to the radiator fins adjacent to the lower coolant hose inlet. It is a small black plastic box with wires & a connector. It's a bit smaller than a pack of cigarettes. Check out the video URL i have posted below by Roy Bling. A bit long, but very thorough & detailed on dealing with EAC & N51 radiator issues. The first seven minutes will show you what you need to ID this sensor, exclusive to N51 SULEV vehicles. To date, I have had no issues with mine, so I cannot validate his repair / servicing methods, but I feel it's a keeper for future reference. #7 · Oct 19, 2021 I thought the N52 valve cover was magnesium for only the first couple of years of production, and had a silver colored vanity cover. Then they switched to a plastic valve cover for the N52 (shared with the N51) around 2007, and came with a black vanity cover. #8 · Oct 19, 2021 Technically, the N52 has a magnesium cam cover; the N52n/N52k has a plastic cover.
