David Griffin AvatarBy David GriffinUpdated: Aug 5, 2020 4:35pm UTC27 commentsNetflix is taking an in-depth look at the storied history of video games with a new documentary, titled High Score, which is set to premiere on the streaming giant on Wednesday, August 19, 2020.Here's how the streamer describes the series: "High Score is a documentary series about the golden age of video games, when legends – from Pac-Man to Doom – were brought to life. Through ingenuity and sheer force of will, computer pioneers and visionary artists from around the globe spawned the iconic worlds ofSpace Invaders, Final Fantasy, Street Fighter II, Mortal Kombat, Sonic the Hedgehog, MADDEN NFL, and beyond. Without rules or roadmaps, players and innovators alike pushed the limits of money to be made, rivals to be crushed, and hearts to be won. This is the story of the brains behind the pixels and how their unmatched innovation built a multi-billion dollar industry - almost by accident."IGN can exclusively reveal the awesome opening credits for the upcoming series in the video below (or watch at the top of the page). Can you catch every retro game reference in High Score's opening credits?Series director France Costrel explains why this particular endeavor to learn more about the history of video games is deeply rooted in her past. "Games are a universal language," Costrel said. "I grew up in France and didn’t read the same books or [listen] to the same music as my American friends. But we all share something in common: we played the same video games. Wherever you are in the world, if you ask someone about Mario, chances are they will know and love that cute mustachioed plumber!"All six episodes of High Score will be available to binge on Netflix on Wednesday, August 19, 2020.
