Nitin Gadkari KOLHAPUR: Union highways minister Nitin Gadkari on Saturday said a new 699km-long national highway would connect Pune and Bengaluru and would pass through the drought-prone areas of Satara and Sangli districts. Several sections of the existing 775km Pune-Bengaluru national highway tend to get submerged during the monsoon. "The new highway has been designed in a way to ensure that no stretch is flooded at any time," he said while addressing a rally in Sangli.
The new highway - to be constructed at a cost of Rs 40,000 crore - will pass through the drought-prone and underdeveloped regions of Khandala, Phaltan and Khatao in Satara district and Khanapur, Tasgaon and Kavthe Mahankal localities in angli district. In Karnataka, it will pass through Belagavi, Bagalkot, Gadag, Koppal, Ballari, Davangere, Chitradurga, Tumkur and onwards till Bengaluru. The new route will reduce traffic load on the existing highway. Gadkari inaugurated two national highway projects worth Rs 2,334 crore on Saturday at the Rajmati maidan in the Vishrambaug area of Sangli city. He inaugurated the stretch between Borgaon and Vatambare on the NagpurRatnagiri National Highway-166 (worth Rs 2,076.63 crore) and the Sangola-Sonand-Jath stretch on National Highway 965 (worth Rs 257.38 crore). tion along the national highways. “Several farmers have committed suicide due to lack of water. Water conservation is the need of the hour and it is high time we store and conserve flowing water. On this Sangli-Solapur highway, if we get the permission, all the river and nullah widening and depth increasing (dredging) work will be carried out by the central government,” he said. A dry port, a logistic park and a satellite port will be created in Sangli district by signing an MoU between the state and central governments for fund contribution. “If a dry port is created here, then it will offer a direct import-export facility and will be very good for Sangli’s economy,” added Gadkari.
