Barley B We are looking to purchase a "new to us" round baler. I want something with net wrap as an option. We are baling using a Massey Ferguson 281 XE. (69 HP PTO) Sales guy phoned back today with a New Holland BR 7060. It doesn't have the rotochop feature and requires 70 HP to operate according to Specs. Am I getting into power troubles by buying this baler? It's 5 hours from home so no real chance to try before committing. Any advice would be appreciated. #1 · Jun 14, 2018 (Edited by Moderator) We are looking to purchase a "new to us" round baler. I want something with net wrap as an option. But but there have been times when that tractor was broke down, so I had to use our old Allis Chalmers 180 on the baler. It's rated at 64 HP, and the New Holland book says the minimum HP needed is 65. On level ground, it works OK. But when you take it in the hills, that's a different story. That poor old tractor got a workout, but it did do it. In my opinion, if you have relatively flat ground, your Massey will work. If you have hilly ground, I would like to see at least 80 HP. A bigger tractor will also give you more stopping power, which is important in hills. #3 · Jun 14, 2018 When I first got into doing my own hay, I bought a large closed mouth JD round baler at an auction, took it home and made hay. I did not know much about hay machinery but figured we had done okay. The thing is though, the baler really powered down the tractor on the uphill sections, and it got way worse if a bale was nearly formed while you were heading back uphill. Some months later I was able to get a factory manual for the baler, and it stated that you should have a minimum of 70 hp to run that baler. Our diesel tractor was rated for 53 hp at the pto. It had no problem running the baler on flat lands, but hills required some strategy. Lesson learned; if the factory says their implement needs XX hp to operate it properly, pay attention. PaulNs advice is spot on. #4 · Jun 14, 2018 I have a BR740a,basically the same baler as the 7060. I pulled it for several years with a Case 685 at about 65 Hp. I did give the tractor a workout, and I have plenty of hills. You have to be smart on the hills. The baler doesn't see the full potential behind a smaller tractor. The 640/644/648 series balers take less horsepower to run as I had one of those prior to my BR740A Insert Quotes Post Reply
