New Lumix GX Vario 12-35mm (H-HSA12035) VS Old Lumix GX ...

My grandson has a Panasonic DMC-G7 camera he uses for creating music videos. He wants to try to develop this into a business for a second source of income.
I want to gift him with a camera lens, but I'm not sure (and neither is he) of the best lens to buy.
I've been researching online and many knowledgeable users seem to view the Lumix GX Vario 12-35mm as the best first lens for someone whose focus is music videos.
The problem is, I see that Panasonic just released a updated version of the 12-35mm (H-HSA12032) this year. The cost is $999.99.
I see the previous model 12-35mm (H-HS12032) is available some place for $699.99.
Is the new lens worth the extra $300.00? Or should I buy the previous model?
Can the new one be used on more cameras..? (If my grandson switches to another camera in the future, could the new model lens be more compatible...?)
Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

The old one was underpriced, that why the new one has a more realistic price tag of $1k.
Conclusion: get the old one.

Their conclusions lead me to believe the 1st generation is a better value. And having used the v1 I can say it's a lovely piece of kit.

Yep, I couldn't judge whether the new version was worth the extra cost. When I talked to a salesman at Best Buy, he said the only difference was the new lens has a wide zoom and the old lens has a standard zoom. But I didn't know how significant that is for someone making music videos....
Doux Vide, I think a fix was released for the Dual I.S. on the old lens. (If I understood correctly.) When I first looked up the two lenses on the Panasonic website, I saw this information on the SUPPORT tab for the old lens:
- Version: 1.3
- Issues Addressed: Dual I.S.(Image Stabilizer) is available by this Firmware update. (using a camera with this feature)* Dual I.S.:Innovative Handshake Correction System by the ideal combination of lens I.S. and body I.S.Dual Image Stabilization is a feature of the DMC-GX8. Other lenses will also be updated with this feature via firmware throughout the year
- Release Date: 8-6-2015
- Operating Systems: Windows/Mac
Wow... Such beautiful shots, HornOUBet... I guess you've been doing this for awhile!
Thanks for responding to my inquiry. I wish I could afford to treat my grandson to a $2000 camera! But, for now, he'll be happy just to receive a lens. Lol!!
I'll let my grandson know that you recommend the Lumix GH5. If that's a better camera for music video, maybe my grandson can try to get one later, once the business is going good.

Yep, it does sound like v1 is the better deal right now. Thanks for your help!

Ignore that salesman. Just BS... Both are 12mm ~35mm f/2.8, i.e., both have the same zoom range covering wide angle of 24mm (eq to FF) to a short tele 70mm (eq to FF). Both are constant f/2.8, weatherproof and DFD compatible. From what I learnt from the owners of the mark 2 version on M43 forum, optically they are also the same.
By the latest firmware (as your quoted below) the Mark 1 is now Dual IS compatible to use on GX8 and GX85 (no help on G7). I was told by some members that another firmware would be released by Panasonic to upgrade the mark 1 to Dual IS-2 but no official word from Pany yet.
However, since G85 and GH5 a newer stabilization Dual IS-2 be used, the mark 2 version is Dual IS-2 ready lens (likely 1 extra stop of stabilization than Dual IS be expected). So mark 2 looks like futureproof in terms of better stabilization.
Also the mark 2 version has an improved refresh rate (for faster AF). IICR might have been upgraded to 240 fps. Not sure what is the refresh speed of mark 1. A faster AF and AF tracking ability when it was used on newer model (not G7) could be expected.
Worth for the extra cost? Can't comment. I am very happy with mark 1 on GX85, not planning to replace it with mark 2 unless it will affect the full functionality of my future upgrade.

If you are not going to upgrade to G85/GH5 soon, the recent discounted mark 1 is indeed an excellent buy.

So only difference is in the OIS module (dual-IS for mkI, dual-IS2 for mkII).

Oh, I'm not a video guy!!! I'm just spreading the propaganda as all brand loyal fan boys are supposed to do....
I have tried some small personal video stuff for fun, and I have learned at least one thing; there is more to a good video than the camera......

I didn't even realize the DUAL IS firmware upgrade doesn't actually benefit the GX7.
After reading and re-reading all of the responses here, I ordered the Mark 1. I pick it up at Best Buy tomorrow.
I'm putting the $300 difference in a separate bank account and will add something to it each pay. Then, if his business goes well, in a couple years I'll see about treating my grandson to another new piece of equipment, whatever he needs by then.
Many thanks again to all of you for your help!
