Especially when he compared his Panasonic 45-200 to the photo of the 45-200 II. Looks almost identical except for cosmetics. Anybody know if there any significant improvements? Looks like they updated everything except the optics - improved autofocus, improved aperture mechanism (i.e. hopefully no more burst shooting hangups with the 100-300), improved image stabilization, and now they are all weather-sealed as well! And even the optics might be improved with new coatings. I'm really impressed at how thorough the changes are, actually, considering everything is getting released all at once. Really good news for mid-range shooters.Holoholo55

It looks like it's addressed all of its disadvantages against the Olympus 75-300, and now has the faster aperture and weather-sealing as bonus. Looks like very good value now. Hopefully sample variation is a bit better on this new lens, or the revised coatings are able to improve things optically a bit.

I bolded what i thought was important, including the prices, that don't look that bad.LAS VEGAS, NV (JANUARY 4, 2017) – Panasonic is renewing four LUMIX G digital interchangeable lenses to gain higher performance and mobility: the LUMIX G X VARIO 12-35mm / F2.8 II ASPH. / POWER O.I.S. (H-HSA12035), LUMIX G X VARIO 35-100mm / F2.8 II / POWER O.I.S. (H-HSA35100), LUMIX G VARIO 45-200mm / F4.0-5.6 II / POWER O.I.S. (H-FSA45200) and LUMIX G VARIO 100-300mm / F4.0-5.6 II / POWER O.I.S. (H-FSA100300). All of these new lenses comply with the advanced functions of the latest LUMIX G digital cameras. In addition to the POWER O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) in each lens, they work with Dual I.S. (Image Stabilizer)*1, 5-axis Dual I.S.*2, and 5-axis Dual I.S.2*3 system when mounted on an applicable Panasonic LUMIX DSLM (Digital Single Lens Mirrorless) camera. The LUMIX G VARIO 45-200mm / F4.0-5.6 II / POWER O.I.S. (H-FSA45200) and LUMIX G VARIO 100-300mm / F4.0-5.6 II / POWER O.I.S. (H-FSA100300) boast dust/splash-proof durability. A total of nine lenses in the full LUMIX G lens lineup now feature a rugged design to withstand use under harsh conditions. Notably, the new lenses excel in video recording performance. In addition to the silent operation achieved by the inner focus drive system, the micro-step drive system in the aperture control section helps the camera to smoothly capture the brightness changes when zooming or panning. The AF tracking performance when zooming is also improved thanks to high-speed frame analysis for focus control. The LUMIX G VARIO 45-200mm / F4.0-5.6 II / POWER O.I.S. (H-FSA45200) and LUMIX G VARIO 100-300mm / F4.0-5.6 II / POWER O.I.S. I used it quite a bit shooting kids soccer games, which I shot at f8 anyway, but it felt like half the aperture range wasn't usable. That's why I replaced it with a Zuiko ED 50-200 SWD. The weathersealing and improved AF and IS are welcome upgrades, but I was hoping for a bit more. I guess they didn't want to make big optical changes when they have a line of Leica lenses coming out in similar ranges, so as not to cannibalize those sales. Compared the specs of the old 45-200 and the 45-200 II. Both 16 elements in 13 groups. Aside from improved coatings, probably no optical changes. Last edited: Jan 4, 2017Hypilein

Joined Mar 18, 2015 Messages 1,782 The 45-200 certainly doesn't seem that appealing still, but the 100-300 sounds amazing now. I know that loads of people say that it's not the sharpest lens of all time, but 600mm equiv is difficult and I've seen some stellar shots with it. My parents have one, and sharpness is not the issue. It's motion blur and getting the things in focus. Improving the OIS and focus unit makes this a really impressive budget super tele.Repp

Click to expand...Couldn't agree more. I owned a 100-300 previously, but between the build quality, lack of weather sealing, older OIS, and slow aperture mechanism that limited its usefulness for C-AF shooting, I sold it and bought a 50-200 SWD + 1.4x TC. It addressed all of my issues with the 100-300. However, it now seems that the 100-300 II has addressed all previous complaints (hopefully they've fixed the "sticky" zoom action). I definitely plan on renting one and putting it through its paces at an autorace this summer, and will likely compare it to the 50-200 SWD to see how well it performs. I've only purchased a few lenses brand new in the past, but if the lens performs as expected, I may pick one up since the price is supposed to only be $650.
