Joined Jan 9, 2014 Messages 129 Location Maryland I’ve just purchased some eneloops at Costco and it came with the BQ-CC55 charger. I’ve done some reading and it seems that the newer BQ-CC55 is a time based charger and faster than the BQ-CC-17 which I also have. Is the older CC-17 still a better charger compared to the new BQ-CC55? Regards to All C

Hi Cekid, That’s why I posted the question as you noticed, “Time based?” I was searching on line about the reviews on this charger and came across to this comment. There isn’t many reviews on the BQ-CC55, most are users from Amazon, and the “time based charger” must have been from a user. I also have the CC-17 and HKJ has a very detailed review where he says the CC-17 is -dv/dt charger. Anyhow, I’m just looking for opinions from the members here other than Amazon about this charger. As far as I can see having both side by side (BQ CC17 and the BQ-CC55) is that the CC55 is about 1/2 taller, has colored lights that indicates the percentage and charges much faster than the BQ CC17 which I like very much even though it is a slower charger, but if I can gather some more info about this charger would be great. The BQ-CC51 is a dumb, time-based charger. It is very slow (a good thing, since that will be gentler on the overcharging it will do). The BQ-CC55 appears to be a proper smart charger. I wonder if a reviewer got confused because they advertise it as a 3-hour charger, thinking as a result it's a time based one. 3 hours is simply the approximate time to charge 4 x AA, 2000 mAh batteries from empty. The Panasonic chargers apparently work by pulsing the current in an alternating fashion to each battery it is currently charging, so for 3 or 4 batteries in a BQ-CC55, each battery sees 3 Amps for 23% of the time, or with 1-2 batteries, 3 Amps for 46% of the time. This no doubt helps keep the charging circuit low cost. (Source: NLee The Engineer) Panasonic is obviously ok with subjecting their batteries to those pulse of high current, but I have to wonder if that might at least slightly affect the long term battery life compared to the BQ-CC17. Not that I'd worry much about only getting 1000 cycles out of a 1500 cycle battery, but it's food for thought - which is better might be a matter of choosing between faster chargers or being gentler on the batteries. marcosg

Joined Jan 9, 2014 Messages 129 Location Maryland It seems to be a great charger for travel if I need my cells to be charged fast and it is even faster when charging one or two cells. For home use, I’ll stick with with my C9000’s and BQ-CC17. What I like about those BQ’s chargers is that I can leave my batteries charging overnight and not worry about overcharging.
