The Vietnam National Boxing Championships was held in their capital city in Hanoi where the women and men boxers could attend in a long competition. Their most experienced men boxers such as Huynh Ngoc Tan, Bui Trong Thai, Nguyen Van Hai and Truong Dinh Hoang were all won their weight classes in Hanoi. Vietnam’s women boxers reached the world class level in the recent years but their men’s athletes also developed well and attended as many international events as possible. Vietnam’s men’s boxers attended in the Thailand Open International Boxing Tournament, in the Kapolri Cup and also in the Jakarta 2018 Asian Games. Before and during the Vietnam National Boxing Championships an AIBA 1-star Referee & Judge Course was held in Hanoi which was led by two experienced AIBA Instructors and former Olympian referees such as Mr. Wayne Rose of Australia and Thailand’s Mr. Paiboon Srichaisawat. The first gold medal of the whole Vietnam Men’s National Boxing Championships was taken by Binh Phuoc’s Tran Minh Huy who turned to 18 only this year but he proved his potential in the event and won the pinweight (46kg). The teenager was too quick for Nguyen Linh Phuong in the semi-finals and he continued his winning path against Le Tien Tien in the final. Quan Doi’s Huynh Ngoc Tan attended already in the 2011 Southeast Asian Games where he claimed a silver medal in Indonesia. The 27-year-old light flyweight (49kg) boxer was impressed in his final against Ho Chi Minh City’s Tat Hoang Thanh achieving his next national title in Vietnam. Bui Trong Thai attended in several international competitions such World Military Games, ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships and Southeast Asian Games as well therefore the 24-year-old boxer was enough experienced to beat another national team member boxer Tran Van Thao at the flyweight (52kg). Nguyen Van Gioi delivered a small sensation in the final of the bantamweight (56kg) where he defeated Southeast Asian Games bronze medallist Tran Phu Cuong. Nguyen Van Hai is Vietnam’s most experienced elite boxer who is member of the national team since 2005 and attended in all levels of boxing excluding the Olympic Games. The 30-year-old lightweight (60kg) boxer defeated another international level hope Nguyen Van De in their top final. Vu Thanh Dat is only a 20-year-old talent but his skills were enough to beat Bui Phuoc Tung in the final of the light welterweight (64kg). Ho Chi Minh City’s 23-year-old Tran Duc Tho attended in the Jakarta 2018 Asian Games which experienced paid off in the final of the welterweight (69kg) against Mau Van Dung. Vu Thanh Trung exceeded all of the previous expectations in the final of the middleweight (75kg) where he defeated the favourite Huynh Ngoc Vien. Dak Lak’s Truong Dinh Hoang won the gold medal at the Singapore 2015 Southeast Asian Games and he defeated tough Thai and Filipino boxers during his career. Truong returned to the world of boxing at the light heavyweight (81kg) and the 28-year-old boxer was too strong for Luong Van Toan in the final. Nguyen Manh Cuong is only 21 but he impressed in the final of the heavyweight (91kg) against former Southeast Asian Games winner Luong Van Toan who joined to the national squad in 2010. The gold medal of the super heavyweight (+91kg) was captured by Vo Van Que who moved up to this category and his decision paid off in the final against Hai Phong’s 20-year-old Ta Van Thi.
