Rome’s got enough monuments already, to say the least, which is why, in this city, even the best high-end hotels are more likely to be smaller-scale, lower-profile boutique-style properties. That’s certainly the concept behind the Hotel NH Collection Roma Fori Imperiali. It’d be foolish to try to compete on sheer grandeur with its surroundings — it looks directly out over the Altare della Patria, and stands at the top of the Via dei Fori Imperiali, with the Colosseum at the other end and the ruins of the Roman Forum along both sides. 42 rooms and suites isn’t quite bed-and-breakfast territory, but neither is it terribly large, and there’s a touch of upscale residential atmosphere, which is something Rome excels at. The style is contemporary, and a touch minimalistic, but thanks to mural-sized wallpaper illustrations depicting historic Roman villas, there’s a strong current of imperial opulence as well. The views from many of the rooms are extraordinary, but the best ones are to be found on the rooftop, at the Secret View cocktail bar. The only question is: rooftop cocktail at sunset, before dinner at the Restaurant Oro Bistrot by Natale Giunta, or after? Perhaps the safest choice is to do both....
