Size and weight are big decision factors when you are trying to find the ideal camera for your needs. In this section, we are going to illustrate the Nikon D3500 and Nikon D5300 side-by-side from the front, back and top in their relative dimensions. Nikon D3500 has external dimensions of 124 x 97 x 70 mm (4.88 x 3.82 x 2.76″) and weighs 365 g (0.80 lb / 12.87 oz) (including batteries). Nikon D5300 has external dimensions of 125 x 98 x 76 mm (4.92 x 3.86 x 2.99″) and weighs 480 g (1.06 lb / 16.93 oz) (including batteries).
Below you can see the front-view size comparison of the Nikon D3500 and the Nikon D5300. Nikon D3500 is clearly the smaller of the two cameras. Its body is 1mm narrower, 1mm shorter and 6mm thinner than Nikon D5300.
Here is the back view size comparison of the Nikon D3500 and Nikon D5300.
Weight is another important factor, especially when deciding on a camera that you want to carry with you all day. Nikon D3500 is significantly lighter (115g ) than the Nikon D5300 which may become a big advantage especially on long walking trips.
Also keep in mind that body weight is not the only deciding factor when comparing two interchangeable camera bodies, you also have to take into account the lenses that you will be using with these bodies. Since both Nikon D3500 and Nikon D5300 have the same Nikon F lens mount and APS-C sized sensors, lenses will not be a differentiator on total size of the system.

D3500 D5300 Min Average Max Weather SealingUnfortunately neither the Nikon D3500 nor Nikon D5300 provides any type of weather sealing in their bodies, so you have to give extra care especially when you are shooting outdoors. If weather sealing is a must-have feature for you, check these sections: Top DSLR Cameras with Weather Sealing
LCD Screen Size and FeaturesNikon D5300's 3.20" LCD screen is slightly larger than Nikon D3500's 3 screen.
Moreover, Nikon D5300 sports a Fully Articulated screen which you can change the angle and position of the screen almost freely, making it possible to shoot from waist or over-the-head levels, and especially very useful for shooting selfies and video. On the other hand, Nikon D3500 has a fixed type screen which provides almost no flexibility in shooting positions compared to D5300.Both Nikon D3500 and Nikon D5300 have APS-C sized 24.0 MP resolution sensors so sensor size and resolution is not a differentiator between these two cameras.
Another similarity between these two cameras is that both Nikon D5300 and Nikon D3500 sensors lack anti-alias (Low-Pass) filters. Removing anti-alias filter increases the sharpness and level of detail but at the same time, it increases the chance of moiré occurring in certain scenes.
Below you can see the D3500 and D5300 sensor size comparison.
Nikon D3500 and Nikon D5300 have the same sensor sizes so they will provide same level of control over the depth of field when used with same focal length and aperture.
The number of available lenses is a big deciding factor when choosing your interchangeable lens camera. Nikon D3500 and Nikon D5300 have the same Nikon F lens mount and currently there are 316 native lenses available for these cameras.
Another important factor is the availability of image stabilization. None of these bodies have sensor based image stabilization so you have to buy lenses with Optical stabilization feature. Currently there are 108 lenses with Image stabilization for Nikon F mount.
