Size and weight are big decision factors when you are trying to find the ideal camera for your needs. In this section, we are going to illustrate the Nikon D500 and Nikon D7200 side-by-side from the front, back and top in their relative dimensions. Nikon D500 has external dimensions of 147 x 115 x 81 mm (5.79 x 4.53 x 3.19″) and weighs 860 g (1.90 lb / 30.34 oz) (including batteries). Nikon D7200 has external dimensions of 136 x 107 x 76 mm (5.35 x 4.21 x 2.99″) and weighs 765 g (1.59 lb / 25.40 oz) (including batteries).
Below you can see the front-view size comparison of the Nikon D500 and the Nikon D7200. Nikon D7200 is clearly the smaller of the two cameras. Its body is 11mm narrower, 8mm shorter and 5mm thinner than Nikon D500.
Here is the back view size comparison of the Nikon D500 and Nikon D7200.
Weight is another important factor, especially when deciding on a camera that you want to carry with you all day. Nikon D7200 is 95g lighter than the Nikon D500 but we don't think this will make a significant difference.
Also keep in mind that body weight is not the only deciding factor when comparing two interchangeable camera bodies, you also have to take into account the lenses that you will be using with these bodies. Since both Nikon D500 and Nikon D7200 have the same Nikon F lens mount and APS-C sized sensors, lenses will not be a differentiator on total size of the system.

D500 D7200 Min Average Max Weather SealingBoth the D500 and the D7200 have weather sealings in their bodies, making them resistant to water and dust.
LCD Screen Size and FeaturesNikon D500 and Nikon D7200's LCD screens have the same diagonal size of 3.20 inches.
On the other hand, Nikon D500 features a Tilting screen where you can change the angle of the screen to make it easier to shoot from waist or over-the-head levels whereas the Nikon D7200 has a fixed type screen which provides less flexibility in shooting positions compared to D500. Nikon D500 has a 21.0MP APS-C (23.5 x 15.7 mm ) sized CMOS sensor and features Expeed 5 processor. On the other hand, Nikon D7200 has a 24.0MP APS-C (23.5 x 15.6 mm ) sized CMOS sensor and features Expeed 4 processor.Another similarity between these two cameras is that both Nikon D7200 and Nikon D500 sensors lack anti-alias (Low-Pass) filters. Removing anti-alias filter increases the sharpness and level of detail but at the same time, it increases the chance of moiré occurring in certain scenes.
Below you can see the D500 and D7200 sensor size comparison.
Nikon D500 and Nikon D7200 have almost the same sensor size, so neither of them has any significant advantage over the other in terms of providing control over depth of field when used with the same focal length and aperture.
DxOMark Sensor ScoresDxOMark is a benchmark that scientifically assesses image quality of camera sensors. It scores camera sensors for color depth (DXO Portrait), dynamic range (DXO Landscape) and low-light sensitivity (DXO Sports), and also gives them an overall score. Nikon D500 and Nikon D7200 sensors have been tested by DxO and the results show that D7200 has a better overall score of 87, 3 points higher compared to D500's score of 84.
| Model | Overall | Color Depth | Dynamic Range | Low-light ISO |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nikon D500 | 84 | 24.1 bits | 14.0 Evs | 1324 ISO |
| Nikon D7200 | 87 | 24.5 bits | 14.6 Evs | 1333 ISO |
The number of available lenses is a big deciding factor when choosing your interchangeable lens camera. Nikon D500 and Nikon D7200 have the same Nikon F lens mount and currently there are 316 native lenses available for these cameras.
Another important factor is the availability of image stabilization. None of these bodies have sensor based image stabilization so you have to buy lenses with Optical stabilization feature. Currently there are 108 lenses with Image stabilization for Nikon F mount.
