Vietnamese

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Proto-Vietic *k-ɗɔːk (nape (of the neck)), itself derived from Old Chinese (OC *kə.dˤok-s) (B-S) (SV: đậu) through a regular sound-change which yielded also Vietnamese nong (winnowing basket) from Proto-Austroasiatic *kɗoːŋ ((idem))). This sound change precludes connection to dọc (long and straight leaf stalks of some plants) as proposed by Baxter-Sagart (2014).

Pronunciation

  • (Hà Nội) IPA(key): [nawk͡p̚˧˦]
  • (Huế) IPA(key): [nawk͡p̚˦˧˥]
  • (Saigon) IPA(key): [nawk͡p̚˦˥]
