#1 · Mar 16, 2022 Hi all, My new 1920x1080p gaming build is an i7-12700K with an EVGA 3070 ti ftw3 gpu. The Noctua D15 won't fit in my case with my current ram. I would prefer to use the U12a as I think it looks better and takes up less space. I don't plan on doing any serious overclocking (maybe some minor overclocking to get to 4 GHz). Would I be foolish to use the U12a instead of the D15s? Thanks! - Sort by Oldest first Oldest first Newest first Most reactions #2 · Mar 16, 2022 The D15 does generally cool slightly better despite missing a heatpipe, as it does have a fair bit more surface area. However, among air coolers the U12A isn't at all bad. I find it strange that the D15 won't fit with your RAM. You don't need to use a front fan with it. #3 · Mar 16, 2022 Thanks for replying and for your help! Based on my research (i could definitely be wrong), putting the D15 fans on the middle and back could potentially create noise issues being that the D15 back fan is so close to the case's back fan. Also, I'd prefer to have a smaller cooler than the D15 so that I have more access to RAM and the motherboard if needed. For the reasons above, I decided to look into the D15s (smaller version of the D15). Then I discovered the U12A. So now it comes down to choosing the D15s or the U12A. - 0 Reply #4 · Mar 16, 2022 The NH-D15S is not smaller its the same cooler the only difference is the S is offset to one side to give more cleanance for the top PCI-E slot That and it only comes with a single NF-A15 fan The second fan only give 2-4c lower temps anyway so it does not matter a whole lot to add a second fan Unless your RAM is taller than 65mm there is enough room for them under the cooler If your RAM is less than 65mm i would pick the NH-D15 or NH-D15S if you want the extra PCI-E cleanance space #7 · Mar 16, 2022 It's less than 2-4 difference. If case airflow is excellent and at noise normalised, it's pretty much same performance. Also, the D15S isn't smaller, it's offset to more easily clear the first PCI-E slot. If you really want the extra all-round clearance, sure, go for the U12A; it's about as good as you'll get for a single 120mm tower. #6 · Mar 16, 2022 If in USA, have you considered Thermalright coolers? Thermalright Direct, Thermalright Direct 1, 2 & 3 on Amazon are good and often have sales. Thermalright has several compact hi-performance coolers with 5-7x 6mm or 4-5x 8mm heatpipes at quite good prices. Frost Commander 140 is one of best. U12A is 125x112x158mm (WxDxH) with 7x 6mm heatpipes for $109.95 on Amazon. FC140 has 5x 8mm heatpipes and is 140x121x158mm (WxDxH) w/ single middle fan. Ultra120EX REV.4 in black or white has 6x6mm heatpipes in 132x115x157mm (WxDxH). Venomous Plus has 6x 6mm heatpipes in 127x85x158mm w/ single fan. TA120EX in black or white has 6x 6mm heatpipes in 124x95x154mm (WxDxH). #8 · Mar 16, 2022 Im on a 12700k and running a Nocuta 12a. It works great. You'd have to watercool if ya want better performance. #9 · Mar 17, 2022 thanks Maestro! Are you overclocking at all with the 12a? If not, do you plan to with the 12a? also, congrats on the 3080 ti! I couldn't get one, will use the 3070 ti for now and plan to upgrade my GPU in a couple years. - 0 Reply #10 · Mar 17, 2022 Based on the D15, Have you tried positioning the fans back of the cooler and leaving the middle where it is? This way you don't have any fans over your ram. Either way, any of those two fan options by Noctua will work great with your chip. ;) You can see on my avatar the position I am talking about. #11 · Mar 17, 2022 If you use the D15S as it should be used with fan in middle clearance is no problem. You ram must be 64mm+ height for that to be an issue. My quite tall Viper 4400 (45mm) fits like a charm on my 2 dimm MB that is. I can even put on the front fan and the ram gets stuck in between. D15 just can't keep up when you start pushing your overclock. If you disable E cores, it would work much better.
