#1 · Sep 14, 2016 Helo, I just replaced the stock fans in my Define Nano S with some Noctuas. I went with 2x NF-A14 FLX in the front for intake and 1x NF-S12A FLX in the rear for exhaust. I am powering them all with the MOLEX adapters. I placed the ULNA filters on the intake and a LNA on the exhaust. It made my PC practically silent and temps are still down from stock. I want to get a Noctua Cooler because I know they are pretty good and I want to keep the Tan / S**t Brown theme going here. I am mainly looking at the U12S and the U9S. According to Noctua I could fit a D14 / D15(S) being they are 160mm in height. Not only would these be overkill for my needs, I think I would seriously be pushing my luck with clearance on an iTX motherboard. Iv'e heard some say that these dual towers can overhang the first PCIe slot and being I only have 1.... So, U12S vs U9S. Will the U12S really perform any better than the U9S? When compared, I would bet they have almost the same amount of surface area. The U12 is tall and skinny but the U9 is short and wide. PS: I am going for a "Near Silent" build here which is why I went with the Define Nano S (No Window) so keep that in mind. Is the U12S going to be that much quieter with the whole 120mm vs 92mm? I'm running an i5 6500 BUT it is just my "place holder" as I wait to see what Kaby Lake / Zen brings. My Motherboard, CPU, RAM, and Stock Heatsink are all temporary and are going to be in a future build for my Moms "new" PC. Also the 120mm fan will be quieter for sure. #3 · Sep 15, 2016 What Legonut said. thumb.gif NH-U12S cools much better than U9, and is quieter doing it. Another cooler you might like is the Phanteks PH-TC12DX. Same basic size as U12S PH-TC12DX = 126 x 57 x 157mm (w/o fans), 126 x 107 x 157mm (w/ 2x fans) comes with 2x fans NH-U12S . = . 125 x 45 x 156mm (w/o fans), 125 x 71 x 156mm (w/ 1x fan) comes with 1x fan Guess it depends on prices. tongue.gif #4 · Sep 16, 2016 Thank you for the input. I ended up going with the U12S. It is essentially the largest cooler I feel comfortable getting for my build. It is right at the height restriction and "slim" enough to where it should be fine with any iTX board I get in the future. I could have went with a D14/D15 but I would have really been pushing my luck. With how wide they are, I would be risking possible overhang on my single PCIe slot. (Depending on socket placement) I actually received it today and I am mounting it up now. No regrets. The build quality definitely seems top notch. The mounting hardware is the best I have seen.
