Các cấu trúc câu với Scared

Từ Scared hay được sử dụng nhất vì tính phổ biến. Sử dụng từ này có rất nhiều cách thức đa dạng khác nhau, một số vị dụ tiêu biểu:

• To Scare The Daylights Out Of Someone: To frighten someone

Ex: I thought I was the only one in the house so when he walked into the room, he scared the living daylights out of me. (Tôi đã nghĩ rằng tôi là người duy nhất đang ở trong nhà, vì thế khi anh ta bước vào phòng, anh ta đã làm tôi giật mình)

• “Scare the hell out of (someone)” nghĩa là dọa sợ phát run.

Ex: So why scare the hell out of people for an entire half day by threatening (đe dọa) a total quarantine (cách ly toàn bộ)?

• To Scare One Out Of A Year’s Growth: to be seriously frightened to the point that hyperbolically it could affect how long one will live

• Scare the pants off someone – Có nghĩa là làm ai đó quá sợ hãi

Ex: The film “Nightmare on Elm Street” scared the pants off me (Bộ phim “Nightmare on Elm Street” làm tôi sợ phát khiếp.

• Scared (one) Stiff/ scare (one) silly

Ý nghĩa: Danh từ “Stiff”có nghĩa là xác chết, tử thi. “Một xác chết sợ hãi” là cụm từ lóng ám chỉ nỗi sợ hãi đến mức cứng hết người.

Ex: I am scared stiff of walking alone in the dark (Tôi sợ chết khiếp việc đi bộ trong bóng tối một mình).

• To Run Scared sợ hãi bỏ chạy -> hoảng loạn hoặc chạy trốn, từ bỏ, sợ thất bại.

Ex: Americans are still running scared. Americans are still afraid to shake someone’s hand. Americans are not allowed to go to church or dine out

• To scare someone straight : to scare a person so bad that they improve their behavior.

Ex; His parents thought it would be a good idea to show him pictures of what smoking can do to a person. It worked! It scared him straight and he never smoked another cigarette again.

• To Send A Chill up/ Down One’s Spine hoặc “send shivers down one’s spine” = lạnh xương sống -> cảm giác vừa phấn khích mãnh liệt lại vừa căng thẳng sợ hãi.

Ex: On your big day, each song that plays should be able to send shivers down your spine and create a lifetime memory.

• I Wasn’t Brought Up In The Woods To Be Scared By Owls : to not be easily frightened by someone or something.

Ex: I am not afraid of Eric. I wasn’t brought up in the woods to be scared by owls.

Dùng từ Willies để diễn tả sự sợ hãi

• Give (one) the willies” = Làm cho ai sợ hãi, sợ sệt (từ Mỹ)

Ex: Those aren’t the only formerly occupied places that will give you the willies, though. Abandoned hotels are just are eerie (sợ sệt vì mê tín).

Just think of the many lovers’ quarrels (cuộc cãi nhau), sketchy (sơ sài) deals, and who knows what else probably went down in those guest rooms?

Sử dụng Heebie-Jeebies

• To Get Or Give The Heebie-Jeebies: Cảm giác lo sợ, cảm giác bất an.

Ex: I don’t want to watch that movie, it gives me the heebie-jeebies.

Sử dụng Goosebumps

Từ này nghĩa là nổi da gà (sợ tới mức nổi da gà)

• Have/ Get goosebumps = something that give you goosebumps – cái gì đó thôi khiến cho bạn nổi da gà lên (ý là nó tuyệt hay/ tuyệt vời, kiểu chạm được đến cung bậc cảm xúc cao nhất của bạn hoặc cũng có thể là 1 cái gì đó khiến cho bạn sợ hãi! )

Example: I get goose bumps anytime I’m scared.

Sử dụng Blood Run Cold

Từ này nghĩa là sợ tới mức máu đông lạnh đi (máu tái đi).

• Make (Sombody’s) blood run cold” = làm cho máu ai đó lạnh toát, hàm ý chỉ sợ chết khiếp (vô cùng sợ hãi).

Ex: No matter what form or what stage, that sentence is one that would make anyone’s blood run cold.

Quaking/ Shaking in Shoes

Hiểu nôm na trong tiếng Việt nghĩa là run rẩy trên đôi giày của mình.

• To be quaking/ Shaking in my shoes (boots) = Rung, lắc trong đôi giày nghĩa là ai đó cảm thấy lo lắng, hồi hộp và sợ hãi được thấy một cách rõ ràng.

Ex: I was shaking in my shoes when my name was called from the platform.

Một số thuật ngữ khác

• To Have A Yellow Streak Down One’s Back : có tính nhát gan

Ex: She may act confident, but she has a yellow streak down her back.

• The pit of the stomach” = lõm thượng vị, phần giữa của dạ dày, chỗ dễ bị ảnh hưởng khi con người cảm thấy căng thẳng, sợ hãi, hay những cảm giác mạnh mẽ nào đó.

Ex: The pit in my stomach came from standing on the highest structure around. It didn’t look that high from the ground.

• Whistle in the dark’ (huýt sáo trong bóng tối/bóng đêm) nghĩa là giả vờ tỏ ra tự tin, can đảm, không sợ sệt (pretend to be confident or unafraid).

Ex: He likes to whistle in the dark too, telling the American people that they are safer since his national security team came to town.

• Frightened with: Ex: Boy frightened with a spider (Cậu bé sợ hãi một con nhện)

• Nếu ai đó có ‘nerves of steel‘ (thần kinh thép), điều đó có nghĩa là họ dũng cảm, đặc biệt khi dưới sức ép rất lớn.

Ex: There’s a man on a tightrope walking between those two skyscrapers! He must have nerves of steel!

• Be afraid of one’s own shadow‘ nghĩa là nhát gan, sợ bóng sợ gió (very timid and fearful).

Ex: She was a sensitive child, to put it mildly—the kind of kid who was afraid of her own shadow.
