yukikaze Y My S60 is at Northpoint Volvo in Alpaharetta having services done and the service adviser and tech stated my 2005 S60R (@102K miles) has a noisy alternator and they recommend replacing it due to bad bearing I believe. Replacement cost is close to $1000. They said if it fails it will possibly throw the timing belt too. Thoughts ? Has anyone else ran into the issue ? Does the whole alternator actually need to be replaced to correct this issue ? I'm unfamiliar with the S60 alternator but that seems astronomical compared to other cars I've been around. #4 · Aug 31, 2012 that seems high to me, whats the part cost? Unless it is buried behind a bunch of things that need to be removed/moved out of the way first I wouldn't imagine it would take that long. #5 · Aug 31, 2012 (Edited) I will see if I can get the breakdown when I pick the car up, I am not having the recommended replacement done yet. Volvo parts wholesale online which I believe is ran by a Volvo dealer shows the retail for a 2005 T5 alternator of $541, their discounted online price is $443. #6 · Aug 31, 2012 Here's some insight. New alternator is going to cost money. I think it was about $300. Also, be absolutely sure you check the Bosch part number on yours and cross reference it to whatever alternator either you buy or someone else buys to install on your car. The PN's are all f'd up and even Bosch admitted they had their catalog wrong when I was troubleshooting why the one I installed had the wrong voltage regulator and PN's didn't match up. Anywho, on to installation. It's a pain in the butt, I'll be honest. You need to move the power steering pump, remove the upper radiator hose, and that's the easy part. I brought it up through the top and I kid you not, it's like one of those metal horse shoe puzzles that you have to do it just right to get the thing in and out. You must be very mechanically inclined to do this replacement. I just dropped a grand replacing the drive shaft about month ago with an OEM one. Darn I wish I had flown to PA and bought the Black Inscription S60 T5 (2007 IIRC) instead over the my S60R. In my first year I have replaced the front 4C struts, Driveshaft (had been replaced by P.O. with the incorrect part # driveshaft) and throttle sensor and due it sitting so low I caught front bumper/spoiler on parking block right after I bought it and pulled it part way off. Maybe we will get an ice storm this winter in Atlanta and I might feel better having AWD

#9 · Aug 31, 2012 (Edited) That's just insane. You can get a new alternator (refurb) for about $350 at Napa, and bring it to a local shop or DIY, a shop will probably charge you two hours labor, so about $200. It's really a fairly easy job, I or someone else can post the vadis instructions for you. This is with my cost, I'll send you a PM with my napa account number. Furthermore, if the bearing goes bad it doesn't mean the alternator won't work. You'll know when it breaks because you'll have a little battery symbol pop up. It won't cause engine damage, that's just dumb.. They just want your $$$$$ I wouldn't recommend driving a long distance (more than like 2 miles) on just the battery alone, but it will still drive without an alternator so long as the battery is charged.

#10 · Aug 31, 2012 I will call this independent that my coworkers have recommended and get an estimate from them; I have much experience the Indie Volvo Specialists around Atlanta and honestly more often than not you pay more then the Dealer only get a year warranty and the work isn't as thorough (zip ties instead of replacing OEM fasteners) so since Volvo has gone to a2 year warranty on most parts its a better value then the Indies. Plus Northpoint reimburses half of the cost of my rental for the day for dealer work costing between $500-$1000 and I think all for work over $1000 . I called an Indie when I first got my S60R and they quoted me $700 for FRONT PADS! and said Rotors would be extra - No Joke. I am letting Northpoint replace the pads for $255 Today including labor. #11 · Aug 31, 2012 I called Volvo to ask for what it would costs for brakes all around, $1530. Every reman I've ever done is on borrowed time--even the ones with 'lifetime guarantee.' The guarantee sounds great until you are on your 5th, & you never know where or when it will strand you this time... NAPA might be better, their stuff is usually a cut above the parts chains, but IMO still a risk with reman. Just my two cents. #16 · Aug 31, 2012 I agree, I have a friend that owns an Auto Repair shop out of state from me and I hear his complaints about reman alternators (cheap generics having to be "reclocked" for different applications, early frequent failures, etc) and I know its a pain to replace this one. He has "friends" that will go buy a cheap generic and want him to put it on their car. The price I got from Back on the Road is supposedly for an OEM one. Show more replies 0 Reply #15 · Aug 31, 2012 (Edited) If just a noisy bearing, that can be replaced by just matching up the bearing at a bearing shop.If everything else is OK with the alternator, that would be the cheapest route. The dealer will just remove and replace since they need to stand behind their work and warranty for two years. It is not cost effective for them to do any bench work such as bearing replacement. In regard to potential engine damage, there is a REMOTE possibility that should the bearing freeze, which will cause the serp belt to break, it could someway find it's way into the timing belt and throw it, however the timing belt is pretty well enclosed. #18 · Sep 1, 2012 I bought mine from FCP.
