The cyclone warning for the north-west Top End has been cancelled, with the tropical low near Darwin no longer expected to reach category one cyclone strength.

Key points:

  • Forecasters had warned the tropical low near Darwin could intensify on Sunday
  • The warning was cancelled overnight
  • Heavy rain and squally winds are still forecast across the Top End

Forecasters had predicted the system developing near the Tiwi Islands on Saturday could intensify into a Boxing Day cyclone on Sunday.

Authorities warned people in Dundee Beach, south of Darwin, to prepare for the cyclone to cross the coast near the town on Sunday afternoon.

The warning was cancelled by the Bureau of Meteorology NT (BOM) on Saturday night.

The bureau said the storm should cross the coast south of Dundee Beach as a tropical low overnight and move across the Top End on Sunday and Monday.

It's expected to reach the Gulf of Carpentaria on Tuesday, where it may strengthen again.

Heavy rain and squally winds are still forecast across the Top End on Sunday.

A severe weather warning remains in place for a large part of the Top End from Wadeye to Nhulunbuy along the coast and inland to Katherine.

The warning also applies to Darwin and the Tiwi Islands.

Heavy rain and flash flooding is forecast in the warning zone, with falls of up to 300 millimetres possible in some areas.
