There is 13 months difference between E-PL9 and GX850 so we don't expect to see a huge technology difference between these two cameras but it would still give an advantage to younger E-PL9, especially in sensor tech.

Size and weight are big decision factors when you are trying to find the ideal camera for your needs. In this section, we are going to illustrate the Olympus E-PL9 and Panasonic GX850 side-by-side from the front, back and top in their relative dimensions. Olympus E-PL9 has external dimensions of 117 x 68 x 39 mm (4.61 x 2.68 x 1.54″) and weighs 380 g (0.84 lb / 13.40 oz) (including batteries). Panasonic GX850 has external dimensions of 107 x 65 x 33 mm (4.21 x 2.56 x 1.3″) and weighs 269 g (0.59 lb / 9.49 oz) (including batteries).

Below you can see the front-view size comparison of the Olympus E-PL9 and the Panasonic GX850. Panasonic GX850 is clearly the smaller of the two cameras. Its body is 10mm narrower, 3mm shorter and 6mm thinner than Olympus E-PL9.

Weight is another important factor, especially when deciding on a camera that you want to carry with you all day. Panasonic GX850 is significantly lighter (111g ) than the Olympus E-PL9 which may become a big advantage especially on long walking trips.

Also keep in mind that body weight is not the only deciding factor when comparing two interchangeable camera bodies, you also have to take into account the lenses that you will be using with these bodies. Since both Olympus E-PL9 and Panasonic GX850 have the same Micro Four Thirds lens mount and Four Thirds sized sensors, lenses will not be a differentiator on total size of the system.

E-PL9 GX850 Min Average Max Weather Sealing

Unfortunately neither the Olympus PEN E-PL9 nor Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX850 (Lumix DMC-GX800 / Lumix DMC-GF9) provides any type of weather sealing in their bodies, so you have to give extra care especially when you are shooting outdoors. If weather sealing is a must-have feature for you, check these sections: Top Mirrorless Cameras with Weather Sealing

LCD Screen Size and Features

Olympus E-PL9 and Panasonic GX850's LCD screens have the same diagonal size of 3.00 inches.

Both cameras feature Tilting screens where you can change the angle of the screen to make it easier to shoot from waist or over-the-head levels.

Both Olympus E-PL9 and Panasonic GX850 have Four Thirds sized 16.0 MP resolution sensors so sensor size and resolution is not a differentiator between these two cameras.

One other difference between these two cameras that is worth mentioning is that Panasonic GX850's sensor doesn't have an anti-alias (Low-Pass) filter. Removing anti-alias filter increases the sharpness and level of detail but at the same time, it increases the chance of moiré occurring in certain scenes.

Below you can see the E-PL9 and GX850 sensor size comparison.

Olympus E-PL9 vs Panasonic GX850 Sensor Size Comparison
Sensor Size and Resolution Comparison image of Olympus E-PL9 and Panasonic GX850 Cameras

Olympus E-PL9 and Panasonic GX850 have the same sensor sizes so they will provide same level of control over the depth of field when used with same focal length and aperture.

The number of available lenses is a big deciding factor when choosing your interchangeable lens camera. Olympus E-PL9 and Panasonic GX850 have the same Micro Four Thirds and have total of 132 lenses to choose from.

Another important factor is the availability of image stabilization. Olympus E-PL9 has a big advantage in this regard because it has a sensor based image stabilization (IS) which means that all the lenses mounted to this body will be stabilized. On the other hand, Panasonic GX850 doesn't have this feature so you have to buy a lens with optical stabilization feature. Currently there are 39 lenses for Micro Four Thirds mount with Optical Image Stabilization features.
