Size and weight are big decision factors when you are trying to find the ideal camera for your needs. In this section, we are going to illustrate the Panasonic GH5S and Panasonic G9 side-by-side from the front, back and top in their relative dimensions. Panasonic GH5S has external dimensions of 139 x 98 x 87 mm (5.47 x 3.86 x 3.43″) and weighs 660 g (1.46 lb / 23.28 oz) (including batteries). Panasonic G9 has external dimensions of 137 x 97 x 92 mm (5.39 x 3.82 x 3.62″) and weighs 658 g (1.45 lb / 23.21 oz) (including batteries).

Below you can see the front-view size comparison of the Panasonic GH5S and the Panasonic G9. Panasonic G9 is 2mm narrower and 1mm shorter than Panasonic GH5S but it is also 5mm thicker.

Weight is another important factor, especially when deciding on a camera that you want to carry with you all day. Panasonic G9 is 2g lighter than the Panasonic GH5S but we don't think this will make a significant difference.

Also keep in mind that body weight is not the only deciding factor when comparing two interchangeable camera bodies, you also have to take into account the lenses that you will be using with these bodies. Since both Panasonic GH5S and Panasonic G9 have the same Micro Four Thirds lens mount and Four Thirds sized sensors, lenses will not be a differentiator on total size of the system.

Both the GH5S and the G9 have weather sealings in their bodies, making them resistant to water and dust.

LCD Screen Size and Features

Panasonic GH5S's 3.20" LCD screen is slightly larger than Panasonic G9's 3 screen.

Panasonic GH5S has a 10.0MP Four Thirds (17.3 x 13 mm ) sized CMOS sensor and features Venus Engine 10 processor. On the other hand, Panasonic G9 has a 20.0MP Four Thirds (17.3 x 13 mm ) sized Live MOS sensor .

Panasonic G9's sensor provides 10MP more than Panasonic GH5S's sensor, which gives a significant advantage in real life. You can print your images larger or crop more freely. On the other hand, please keep in mind that Max sensor resolution is not the only determinant of resolving power. Factors such as the optical elements, low pass filter, pixel size and sensor technology also affects the final resolution of the captured image.

Another similarity between these two cameras is that both Panasonic G9 and Panasonic GH5S sensors lack anti-alias (Low-Pass) filters. Removing anti-alias filter increases the sharpness and level of detail but at the same time, it increases the chance of moiré occurring in certain scenes.

Below you can see the GH5S and G9 sensor size comparison.

Sensor Size and Resolution Comparison image of Panasonic GH5S and Panasonic G9 Cameras

Panasonic GH5S and Panasonic G9 have the same sensor sizes so they will provide same level of control over the depth of field when used with same focal length and aperture. On the other hand, since Panasonic GH5S has 98% larger pixel area compared to Panasonic G9, it has potential to collect more light on pixel level hence have less noise in low light / High ISO images.

The number of available lenses is a big deciding factor when choosing your interchangeable lens camera. Panasonic GH5S and Panasonic G9 have the same Micro Four Thirds lens mount and currently there are 130 native lenses available for these cameras.

Another important factor is the availability of image stabilization. Panasonic G9 has a big advantage in this regard because it has a sensor based image stabilization which means that all the lenses mounted to this body will be stabilized. G9's built-in Image stabilization system is effective for compensating vibration up to 6.5-stops according to CIPA standards. On the other hand, Panasonic GH5S doesn't have this feature so you have to buy a lens with optical stabilization feature. Currently there are 39 lenses for Micro Four Thirds mount with Optical Image Stabilization features.
