In this review, we will be comparing the GX85 and the G7, two Advanced Mirrorless cameras by Panasonic. Panasonic GX85 was introduced to the market in April 2016 and Panasonic G7 was launched in May 2015. There is only 11 months difference between GX85 and G7 so we are expecting this to be a fair comparison regarding age and technology level.

Size and weight are big decision factors when you are trying to find the ideal camera for your needs. In this section, we are going to illustrate the Panasonic GX85 and Panasonic G7 side-by-side from the front, back and top in their relative dimensions. Weight is another important factor, especially when deciding on a camera that you want to carry with you all day. Panasonic G7 is 16g lighter than the Panasonic GX85 but we don't think this will make a significant difference.

Also keep in mind that body weight is not the only deciding factor when comparing two interchangeable camera bodies, you also have to take into account the lenses that you will be using with these bodies. Since both Panasonic GX85 and Panasonic G7 have the same Micro Four Thirds lens mount and Four Thirds sized sensors, lenses will not be a differentiator on total size of the system.

Unfortunately neither the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX85 (Lumix DMC-GX80 / Lumix DMC-GX7 Mark II) nor Panasonic Lumix DMC-G7 provides any type of weather sealing in their bodies, so you have to give extra care especially when you are shooting outdoors. LCD Screen Size and Features

Panasonic GX85 and Panasonic G7's LCD screens have the same diagonal size of 3.00 inches.

Panasonic GX85 features a Tilting-only screen which is mostly only good for shooting from waist or over-the-head levels. On the other hand, Panasonic G7 sports a Fully Articulated screen which is more flexible and useful, especially for taking selfies and video.

Both Panasonic GX85 and Panasonic G7 have Four Thirds sized 16.0 MP resolution sensors so sensor size and resolution is not a differentiator between these two cameras.

Another difference between these two cameras is that Panasonic GX85's sensor lacks anti-alias (Low-Pass) filter. Removing anti-alias filter increases the sharpness and level of detail but at the same time, it increases the chance of moiré occurring in certain scenes.

Panasonic GX85 and Panasonic G7 have the same sensor sizes so they will provide same level of control over the depth of field when used with same focal length and aperture.

The number of available lenses is a big deciding factor when choosing your interchangeable lens camera. Panasonic GX85 and Panasonic G7 have the same Micro Four Thirds lens mount and currently there are 132 native lenses available for these cameras.

Another important factor is the availability of image stabilization. Panasonic GX85 has a big advantage in this regard because it has a sensor based image stabilization (IS) which means that all the lenses mounted to this body will be stabilized. GX85's built-in Image stabilization system is effective for compensating vibration up to 4.5-stops according to CIPA standards. On the other hand, Panasonic G7 doesn't have this feature so you have to buy a lens with optical stabilization feature.
