Phi Phi 2: Surprise Dessert! - Mama's Sweet Tooth

Surprise dessert is probably one of my favourite things. For me, surprise dessert is when you go out to a restaurant for dinner and then you experience a dessert menu that is above the average restaurant dessert menu, and that is exactly what I experienced at Phi Phi 2.

Phi Phi 2 is new restaurant that has opened on Alfrieda street; the heart of St. Albans. Phi Phi is a pretty standard Vietnamese/Chinese restaurant, so when I saw the advertisement for their second establishment, that would take the form of a Bar and Grill, I was immediately intrigued. I could not wait to check out so I made sure I went during their first week. During the day, they have some great Asian fusion dishes and at night, the menu is a choice between Hot Pot and a Korean BBQ. My dining partner and I decided that we would order the KBBQ and the food was absolutely exceptional, but that’s not what I am here to talk about, the dessert menu was what really caught my eye.

As I have been addicted to the current season of Masterchef, the Raspberry White Chocolate Bombe caught my immediate attention due to it’s half sphere shape. The Raspberry White Chocolate Bombe is a vanilla mousse with a raspberry injection, on the a raspberry macaron base, covered with a thin layer of white chocolate. The dessert was plated impeccably and quick check of Phi Phi 2’s instagram will tell you that it’s not just the dessert I ordered that they plate brilliantly. White the dessert was a dark chocolate sauce and some milk chocolate shavings, which provided some bitterness to balance the sweetness of the white chocolate shell. The shell was quite thick, a bit thicker than I prefer, so it was hard to crack, but it tasted amazing, especially with the raspberry flavoured dusting on top. The mousse was so light and fluffy, the raspberry injection that wonder balance of sweet and tart, and the texture of the macaron crumb gave the dessert a brilliant balance and finish. I came to this restaurant expecting bbq, so to have such a wonderful dessert that was so beautifully presented really highlighted my whole experience at Phi Phi 2. As KBBQ and Hot Pot are very much a social dinner, I would happily come to Phi Phi 2 for cocktails and dessert as a solo diner. With my dessert, I ordered a Lychee flavoured Martini and I can’t wait to visit again to try some other desserts and other signature cocktails; my next definitely being the Vanilla slice, as they boast on the menu that it is The Best Vanilla Slice in Melbourne (as voted by The Age).

Now I can’t finish this review without talking about the entire and ambience of this establishment. From the moment you walk upstairs, you are presented with a very cosy but stylish interior, something to rival some of the trendier bars in Melbourne’s CBD. There is a sense of openness but also intimacy with the booths, and a sense of trend and stylishness with the bar. The decor is new and modern, with a visually enticing mural that pays homage to the roots of the cuisine. The staff go above and beyond to ensure that the patrons have are well looked after.

Please don’t pass up the opportunity to come down to this new gem in St. Albans, whether you are there for a drink, for dessert or for an all round pleasurable dining experience.
