On 9 July 2019, Canon announced 2 new models in its PowerShot G series of premium compact cameras. On the PowerShot G5 X Mark II, the electronic viewfinder (EVF) now takes on a pop-up design that enhances the camera’s portability. Meanwhile, the vloggers will want to sit up and take notice of the tiny but power-packed PowerShot G7 X Mark III, which has been upgraded with the ability to livestream directly to YouTube*. Both cameras come with a new 1.0-inch stacked CMOS image sensor and the DIGIC 8 image processor, promising a huge increase in imaging capabilities. *via Canon Image Gateway

Performance upgrade: New stacked CMOS image sensor and DIGIC 8

Both the PowerShot G5 X Mark II and the PowerShot G7 X Mark III are equipped with a new 1.0-inch stacked CMOS image sensor that features 20.1 effective megapixels, as well as the DIGIC 8 image processing engine. These features promise better image quality and faster performance, including:

- High ISO speed shooting with expanded ISO of up to 25,600 - Continuous shooting at up to 30 frames per second - 4K 25p/30p video without cropping

New stacked image sensor for PowerShot G5 X Mark II and G7 X Mark III

About the new stacked CMOS image sensor The pixel and circuit portions of the new image sensor are placed on two separate, stacked layers, enabling more efficient use of space on the base layer of the chip. As this design makes it possible for the imaging pixels to be specialised for high image quality, and also enables using higher-performing circuits for processing, signal processing is faster compared to the previous back-illuminated sensors.

RAW burst mode: Enables high speed continuous shooting up to 30 fps

Both the PowerShot G5 X Mark II and the PowerShot G7 X Mark III are capable of up to 30 fps continuous shooting in RAW burst mode. In this mode, the AF is fixed from the first shot, but the significantly faster burst speed enables you to capture fleeting moments that were previously not possible to capture.

Images are recorded in the CR3 RAW format, allowing you to carry out full-scale post-processing of images for even better image quality.

Here are some examples of what you can achieve by post-processing RAW images: Landscape Photography: Quick Tips for Stunning Deep Focused Images RAW Image Processing: How to Bring Out the Blue in Blue Hour Photos

Turning on the pre-shooting feature lets you record the images starting from as early as up to 0.5 seconds before you press the shutter button. That increases your chances of capturing blink-and-you-miss-it moments.

AF tracking is available in the Servo AF drive mode, allowing up to 8.0 fps on the PowerShot G5 X Mark II and up to 8.3 fps on the PowerShot G7 X Mark III.

4K 25P/30P video recording—with no crop

The PowerShot G5 X Mark II and PowerShot G7 X Mark III are both capable of shooting video at resolutions as high as 4K 25p/30p with no crop—ideal for recording footage that requires a wide angle-of-view, such as grand landscapes and scenes taken in tight indoor spaces.

Full HD footage is also possible, including High Frame Rate movies at 100p/120p. This allows you to shoot high-quality slow motion movies where movements appear seamless.

The cameras are also capable of: - 4K time lapse movies - HDR movies

Need a stabiliser? Try the tripod grip

For better stability while shooting video, use either camera with the Tripod Grip HG100-TBR, a video grip that provides a sturdy, comfortable hold of the camera, even during vertical shooting. It's perfect for taking videos to embed into Instagram Stories. If you need to film yourself, the grip conveniently transforms into a table-top tripod. It comes with the Bluetooth-compatible Wireless Remote Control BR-E1, which enables you to control zoom operations and release the shutter remotely.

USB charging: For re-powering on the go

Both the PowerShot G5 X Mark II and PowerShot G7 X Mark III support charging via a USB Type-C cable using the USB Power Adapter PD-E1—extremely useful when you need to charge your camera on the go.

PowerShot G5 X Mark II: Pop-up EVF for viewfinder shooting

PowerShot G5 X Mark II

PowerShot G5 X Mark II dials PowerShot G5 X Mark II pop-up EVF

The pop-up EVF is the most outstanding feature on the PowerShot G5 X Mark II. Consisting of a 2.36-million dot, 0.39-inch high-definition OLED panel, it will be a great help when shooting stills or video outdoors in bright, glaring sunlight, where it can be hard to see the rear LCD display. Use it with the Touch and Drag feature, which lets you intuitively select and move autofocus points even while you are looking through the EVF.

When you are not using the EVF, it can be safely retracted into the camera body, which makes the camera more compact and pocket-friendly.

The various dials will please those who like the analogue feel of direct controls. The elegant, texture-coated body design, reminiscent of classic cameras, should make the hearts of camera collectors flutter.
