Thông đỏ bắc Taxus chinensis (Pilg.) Rehder là một loài thuộc chi Thông đỏTaxus, họ Thông đỏ (Taxaceae), phân bố ở các tỉnh như Lào Cai, Sơn La, Hà Giang, Tuyên Quang, Cao Bằng, Hoà Bình và Thanh Hoá với các quần thể nhỏ, chia cắt, khả năng tái sinh bằng hạt kém đi liền với những đe doạ bị chặt hạ, đẽo vỏ, rừng bị chia cắt, nơi sống bị suy giảm và cháy rừng [5]. Loài này được quốc tế đánh giá là ít nguy cấp (LR/lc) [12] và thuộc Phụ lục II của Công ước về buôn bán quốc tế các loài động vật, thực vật hoang dã CITES [13]. Tại Việt Nam, theo các tiêu chí mới của IUCN 2010, chúng cần được xếp vào bậc sắp bị tuyệt chủng VUA2ac, B2ab(i-v), đã được đưa vào Sách Đỏ Việt Nam với bậc sắp bị tuyệt chủng (VU) [1, 5] và nằm trong nhóm IIA: Thực vật rừng hạn chế khai thác, sử dụng vì mục đích thương mại của Nghị định số 32/2006/NĐ-CP, ngày 30 tháng 3 năm 2006 về quản lý thực vật rừng, động vật rừng nguy cấp, quý, hiếm [2].
