Drama series depicts the story of prisoners and staff at a prison.
Je-Hyeok (Park Hae-Soo) is the best relief pitcher in Korea. He will go to the U.S. and sign a contract with a major league team. One night, he hears his sister screaming and sees a man running out of her apartment. Je-Hyeok and the man get into a physical struggle with Je-Hyeok striking the man with a rock. Later, Je-Hyeok receives a 1 year prison sentence for using excessive force. Devastated, Je-Hyeok must adapt to life in prison.
Meanwhile, Joon-Ho (Jung Kyoung-Ho) is a friend of Je-Hyeok and works in the prison as an officer. He waits for Je-Hyeok's arrival.

Nov 27 2025 9:45 am I think this is the best Korean drama series I ever watch. I've watched this series 3 times. It's hilarious, funny and touching.
Apr 13 2025 11:45 pm I'd heard the writers do our beloved Hangyang dirty... but, wow, was his final denouement poorly scripted! And completely non-sensical after following the arc of his character's recovery journey.
As much as I have loved this show, the final episodes carry the flavor of daytime soap. And could have benefited from a bit of blandness to balance things out.
Which is unfortunate as everything that preceded it was thoroughly enjoyable... even when at times the storylines required having to repeatedly suspend one's disbelief.
My only other quibble was having Jihyeok's love interest be the 13 years younger former coach's daughter who has been, in many ways, like an adoring kid sister whose formative years occurred alongside his fully grown self.
Which made the relationship feel icky enough that I found myself forwarding through most of Krystal's scenes.

It was like seeing for the first time. All of the characters are unforgettable and the friendships and bonds was heartwarming. I am amazed that it didn't receive more awards. The acting and storyline was stellar. I felt each and everything . Too bad there isn't more like this .Jan 22 2025 12:06 am I have rewatch this maybe 3 times already. And I am now watching it again after years a go as it will be gone from Netflix (in my country) this end of January. I still have the same laugh and tears as I have on the first time I watch it. Best KDrama after Reply 1988 (which in fact has the same Director).
Jan 15 2025 9:22 am I just rewatched Prison Playbook because the last day to watch on Netflix (in my country) is January 31. It's been 5 years since the first time I finished it. All I could remember is that I loved it, but now that I rewatched it, I must say it is the best Kdrama I've ever watched. It's better when I watched it the second time. Love all the details, easter eggs, funny twists... With the ensemble cast, everyone's acting is amazing, even the cameos facial expressions are perfect! Can't recommend Prison Playbook enough. Hope the writer comes up with another well-written Kdrama soon!

May 31 2024 8:14 am The Best Drama Ever 10000/10 but I wished they showed that all the cellmates met outside with the officers. I have seen all actor's dramas before watching this drama and trust me all of them are the best actors. I wish they made more drama like this, I don't like intense problems in drama, the light ones which can be solved easily and this drama had that it really is the best drama.
Feb 10 2024 7:52 am Love the drama so much, everyone around Je Hyeok play a big part in his return. I wish Ddoldami get more story background, I really hate him before He join the gang, after He joined Je hyeok, he's actually quite adorable and obedient.
Last few episodes really feels empty, as one by one left the cell, I can feel the loneliness in Yoodaewi in that cell and I don't know if Ddoldami still there or not but still 2 of them would feel really lonely..
Feb 04 2024 12:45 pm It is a rewachable, great drama. I like the main leaders acting, his talent and amazing good humor in this drama. He is cool, funny and cute, lovely and sad, he plays this role Amazing Goood. I like this drama, this is one of the best k-dramas, regie and story as well.

Jan 15 2024 11:31 am I am wondering what will happen to Ddolmani (henchman) at the ending. Other cellmates seem to have a good happy ending, but Ddolmani's story gets to no where at the last episode. Will he be released or will he get to see Je-Hyeok again like Beobja? At the final scene of Yoodaewi (Captain Yoo), he isn't even there in the cell room.
Jan 07 2024 12:35 pm Pure gold. This level of excellence reminds me of "My Mister." Perfect marks across the board. The plot is not complicated; however, the production is superb. The characters are well-built. The comedy is fantastic.
Jun 23 2023 5:10 pm This drama is good but not great. I struggled to watch it week after week so I took months break then came back to it. Overall it was enjoyable but not a rewatch for me because its length. 7/10 stars. Episode 11 revenge episode was my favorite. Episode 16 was good. Park Hae Soon is like a puppy in this drama LOL. Cute then angry it's so funny. I first saw him in Squid game. He is a talented actor. I'm unsure about the age gap between his character and the female lead. Jung Pyong-Ho (Lieutenant Lee) and Jung Woong-in (Officer Paeng) were great in this drama. I really believed their characters and their acting was so natural. Lieutenant Lee is the perfect boyfriend! Yoo Han Yang (looney) was funny at first but I think he was bad to the other inmates. I know its fiction but all the inmates are having a hard time why did he make it harder. The way he was written wasn't good but. The actor did a great job playing Looney. All the cast and crew did very well. I think the drama is long and the flashbacks was too much. It cut into the main story of Je-Hyeok being in prison. The flashback of the male and Female Lead could be done in one or two episodes. Same with Looneys flashbacks.
Apr 13 2023 5:28 am From Hospital Playlist I watched this because of the same director and author and I didn't regrets. This is a wholesome drama makes you laugh and cried forget your problems. This my medicine. I will re-watch this over and over. I like this kind of kdrama as Reply 1998 and Hospital playlist season 1 and 2. Friendship. Slice of life. Slow burn. Comedy. Romance and more. ♡♡♡

Apr 04 2023 1:46 pm loved this drama. loved all the cellmates especially Kaist. him dancing and singing with a broom, i laughed so hard at that. looney also one of my favorites but too upset at his ending. very heartwarming drama, focused more on second chances and humanity is still there.

It's not a common to make a drama with less exagerated drama, you know what i mean, right? I hope there will be next season for this drama. Also, i like the songs when the announcer played it for the 50.000 prisoners

Oct 15 2022 6:35 pm I didn't want to watch it as it is not a pretty guy and not my old stars, but I read the all the reviews and give it a chance. It was very good story. It was not about life of giving a chance to bad criminals, but those innocent ones etc, so it was good to watch. I wont' spoil the plot. However, watch it with attention as it flips back and forward in times, and it is very funny and sad moments.

I was hoping there were reunion.
Must watch and recommended, I should have watched this earlier.

Feb 13 2022 7:02 pm This is a true masterpiece. Prison Playbook left such a good impression to me. I first started watching Racket Boys and saw several comments that the writer for both drama are the same. It explains a lot. Some of the actors in this drama also played a role in Racket Boys which is fun, they met again in an alternate universe. I'm really sad about Looney's ending then again as I watched Racket Boys first, Looney appeared in the last episode moving in with his lover, and he seems to be happy. I enjoyed it so much. They gave him a happy ending, in another universe at least.
Prison Playbook is a heartwarming and fun drama to watch to. They showed us lots of beautiful and painful stories
Feb 05 2022 11:19 am Im sad with druggie's story.. what if his parents was there when he got out, or his lover.. he could have been saved and put in rehab.. well, drug addiction is not something that can be managed alone.. professional intervension is needed, and support of the family and friends..
Beautiful story, entertaining, warm.. season two should be fun to watch..
Feb 01 2022 4:26 pm I took me a while to watch this drama, and the main push was really Jung Hae In, and boy he doesn’t disappoint in this drama either! Overall, this drama is great. It has many funny moments and I love the style of this director. Like the other comment below, it is sugarcoated prison life, but still a good drama. I highly recommend.
Jan 04 2022 1:42 am I started watching this early 2021. But i got bored during the first few episodes (just like reply 1988). Good thing i gave this drama a second chance (again, just what i did with reply 1988). This drama is one of the best. And i heard that it has the same writer as hospital playlist and reply 1988. That writer is truly a genius.
Im just sad everytime one inmate is being transferred or release. Their friendship with each other with the guards are the best. :)

Oct 23 2021 7:07 am I started to watch this last year but had no interest in finishing it after episode 2 Ibgot bored. But after warching squid game, I had to check if park hae soo really is the one from Prison Playbook. I'm glad I came back and finished this one. Such a good drama. It made me laugh and cry a lot. Worth watching!! Tho Im kinda disappointed to Looney after he got out from prison :'((

Oct 03 2021 10:59 am Just finished it I was hesitant at first but thankfully I watched it cause I enjoyed every episode Many are saying they are not happy with the ending, but for me it's okey as life is an open chapter,, there will be no ending unless you're dead The only thing disappointed me is Han Yang, his ending, though yeah it only shows the reality of drugs (so never ever try drugs)

Sep 01 2021 12:17 pm I'm glad I gave this drama a try after more than 3 years it aired. It was an awesome drama. It has it all. I cried, laughed, cursed people, getting angry while watching it. The only thing that makes me disappointed was the ending. I was expecting the cellmate to meet up outside the prison, building rapport. Also I need to know what happen to Dr Ko, Looney and Kaist. Ah, they need to have season 2. Jaeball! I wonder wether they have plan to make season 2 before of they just did it (transfer Dr Ko and Kaist) because they don't know how to give them closure? And what's with Looney? I thought he can't wait to meet his lover? And what's with that drug seller did in front of the prison early morning? Shit!

Aug 24 2021 8:59 am I loved this drama.. I hesitated watching it at first beacuse i thought since its a prison drama, we gonna see people treating each other life trash but what we saw in this drama was amazing.. The characters became brothers.. It was beautiful too see.
The only complaint i have is that they made us fall inlove with all the characters but ddnt show us what happened to them in the end.. Kaist, Dr Ko, min chul.. We would have loved to see how life turned out for them.

May 31 2021 9:52 am Had difficulty finishing the show after watching the first few episodes. It's annoying to watch the lead character being stupid. But as soon as the lead was transferred to the penitentiary, the show has progressed a lot. I enjoyed each character of unit 2 cell 6. Great character development for all of them. Have laughed and cried while watching the rest of the series.
It has a slow start, but you'd definitely enjoy the banter and the bond they've formed among themselves.

What a brilliant series on so many levels, so many intricate characters with heartbreaking or inspiring backstories, all interwoven with warmth and greater humanity conquering evil.

It's the best kdrama for me. Hahaha I recommend it to all kdrama fans. It's a must-watch. It's filled with humorous and heartwarming scenes. Super love this show.
Apr 01 2021 12:03 pm The director is amazing period. I saw all his works and all his dramas and once I finish a drama he made I miss the drama. And if I were to explain his drama in a word it will be healing. All his works are very funny, has friendships, and not a scary, horror, or thriller.

This Korean series sets the characters differently (men instead of women) and is less intense, which makes it easier to watch than OINB. The main characters and characterizations are still so poignant that you are rooting for them the whole way.
The screenwriting and production is great. The characters are compelling. The comedy is hysterical.
But more than anything the acting is superb.
The cast is filled with some of my favorite actors that I have seen in other series. Especially Jung Kyoung-Ho, Lee Kyu-Hyung and Jung Hae-In. But all of the actors are on my list of great now.
The series gives you everything you could want in a compelling drama.

I enjoyed every episode, and all the characters were well written and have their own stories. The story didn't just focus on the main characters but the supporting casts as well, which made this really fun to watch. The one-liners are just too funny. Definitely a must watch if you're looking for something fun and easy to follow series. 98/100

Jan 02 2021 3:31 pm Start watching this drama after found funny clips of HaeRong bickering and "fighting" with his cellmates. And just finished watching all eps. Am happy with all main characters ending, except for HaeRongi. He deserves better after what he went through in the prison. But yeah, it's reality for most of junkie out there. Once u touch the drug(s), it's hard to stop. But still, my poor cutie pie HaeRongi, I just hope u get the happy ending with Ji Won...
Dec 28 2020 11:05 am it took 5 days to finished first eps, but when i finished eps 2, i couldnt stop watching. i love this drama. so much. even i feel sad when it comes to last episode because i really enjoyed every moment of je-hyuk's day. with his cellmates. i laughed and cried so hard in every episodes. i love Han-yang and Kaist when they were together, and with Captain Yoo, too. Nut i need to highlight Han-yang acting is really great. Jung Kyung-ho is always be my fav. this is my first review, because i thought i need to tell everyone this is a must watch drama!

It's so worth it especially if you appreciate slice of life, comedy, and drama. It's a really good mix and this is one of my favorite Korean dramas that were able to make me laugh and cry so much. You will definitely feel attached to the characters, and you would want to know more about them. I especially love the main characters aka Je Hyuk's cellmates.
Dec 17 2020 8:34 pm easily my top drama. everything about this drama is perfect. the actors are really made for their roles. the plot is heartwarming and hilarious yet realistic, this drama really can make you cry then laugh like crazy in 1 minute it's a gem. the OST too, the main title track by gray and bewhy is super catchy and a rap ost is not usually expected but it honestly fits so well and is actually a genius idea. and I love the ost titled nostalgia also... just wow.... personally my favourite character is kaist cos he's freaking funny lol. and also none of the characters are boring or cliche every single character has some form of depth and I really liked how Je-hyeok at first glance may seem absolutely clueless but as the show progresses we see that he can become this psycho beast if he wants and honestly I loved that part about his character. so in conclusion a 100/10 drama and thank you shin won ho pd and writer jung bo hoon and the whole cast and crew for creating this whole masterpiece

But, I did watched the eps. 1 but it is so bored for me because I didn’t know the main actor. So, I didn’t watched this drama until I have no ideas what drama should I watch.
Then, I have completed all the episodes and it such a great drama. It’s doesn’t have to be romance, fantasy, mystery but this drama definitely the best comedy drama. I laughed at every funny scene. Not to forget the casts are superb.
Recommended for everyone looking for a good and fun drama. 10/10

I wanted to watch this drama in 2x speed but didn't want to skip any parts.
So many heartwarming moments and that particular moment in episode 15 was just too sad. That part really had that 'what if' and 'only if' moments.
Looney was definitely my favorite character in this series. Darn those banters with Looney vs Captain Yoo and Looney vs Kais would be the highlight of this drama. His character was the mood~
Many comedic scenes, you can't get a break from laughing hard and still there remained that sad moment.
Just watch this drama... you won't regret it!

Jung Har-In is my favorite actor that’s why I watched it but in all fairness to all the cast and the creators of this series, this is the best I’ve ever seen, thus, this series deserves my one and only feedback! To all the actors who played the role, be it major or just a bit play, they all deserve a big applause! I’m new to Korean shows and it has captured my admiration. I’m a huge fan now!! Continue to give us the best shows!

Aug 31 2020 8:22 am My long weekend ended beautifully, thanks to this series!!! It was a funny, warm and romantic journey of Je Hyeok inside the prison. I was hesitant to watch it at first cause I already know how the director works in his dramas (i.e. reply series and HP) plus I am not really familiar with the lead but I gave it at a try after a friend who’s not really into kdrama recommended it. Not a waste of time and didn’t regret watching however I just felt at loss with Looney’s case. All the effort went to trash with just a single mistake of going back to drugs >.< Ooopppssss, sorry a spoiler. Anyways, this is really a good drama if you’re into a slice of life genre ?

Though he said that he didn't want them to see him going out the jail, deep in his heart, he wanted someone to welcome him outside as soon as he left the penetentiary.
Too bad it was someone else he met as soon as he was released. Can't move on to his story. It was so heartbreaking! </3
He was one of my favorite characters in this drama. :(

Just finished this drama 2 days ago but still can't stop thinking about it. I'm very mad in Looney's story, it's not fair for him. I wish to see him be a better person and finally meet his family and also become closer with his mom. Not like this! T_T
And also, i wish i could see a little reunion of the ex prisoners in the last episode. It's because i love every character and their relationship is so fun to watch. But the last episode is only focus to Jehyeok. It's a little bit disappointing for me.
But overall it's a very worth to watch drama. So many life lessons, but a lot of comedy too. I cried and laugh a lot. Can't wait for another good drama of director Shin Wonho

The Defendant gave me a hard time before so I thought this one too will tear my heart into pieces. I was wrong though. I laugh so much while watching. I like how realistically the plot is, every each episode was worth to watch. To sum it up, binge-watching was worth it.

Jun 22 2020 11:08 pm It's been months since I first watched Prison Playbook but it's such a gem, so I typically watch some clips on youtube from time to time. I will never get tired of watching this show, it's just so precious. Top-notch comedy, drama, and a tiny bit of romance. 80+ minutes for an episode may seem long at first, especially for the first two episodes, but it's so worth it.
The first two episodes may seem boring, but please don't drop it!! It's one of the best Korean dramas ever, as expected of the writer and director. Though I wish we got more closure for the other characters.
It's definitely a part of my favorite Korean dramas, along with Mr. Sunshine and Hospital Playlist.

But why there's no "meeting scene" with his love and family. So i searched it online and DANG WHYY?! I'm here to questioning why it's like the designated situation to force my poor Looney. Why the Hippie and the police is right there?! Why they're not cacth the Hippie, he's the drug dealer and also a drug addict too. I claim it as a crime to do that to Hanyang, omg i'm so mad and sad at the same time.

I got so attached to the characters that every time they would get transferred or released I would get so sad! I also like how the drama shows the stories of all the different characters and not just Je-Hyeok, it really makes you invested in each and every character and their storyline. If you’re debating on whether to watch this, I say just do it!! You won’t regret it.

This drama is truly full of life's message, which is sometimes interspersed with humor and light flowing but can continue to be curious about the continuation of the story. I also want to appreciate all the actors who play in this drama. Their acting is amazing, I didn't think they would play characters they might have never played before. They really appreciate each other's characters and the character development of each episode is also very interesting. It's like illustrating that humans can also change because of their experiences. Really extraordinary! Honestly, in my opinion this is one of the best dramas of all that I've ever watched. The story line, the development of the characters, all nicely packaged by the writer and director. Thank you also to the staff who have worked together in making this drama.

I can't stop crying at the story of Jehyeok, Dr.Ko, Minseong and Capt.Yoo. It makes me sad that good people can get screwed by the cruel world that don't give 'em a break. On a lighter note, how could the prison be teeming with so many good-looking jailbirds? Jehyeok, Joonho, Hanyang, Minsik (Seo Jihoon), Minseong (Shin Jaeha), Capt.Yoo (Jung Haein)... So many eye candies, my head is spinning

I thought they're just trying to show how he got arrested? because the way he speak to the drug pusher is the normal way he speaks(when he's on drugs and his normal normal self before drugs)... but when he got discharged he was still in withdrawal from drugs right thats why he speaks like a child..
but after that, his BF is waiting for him with the ring, but i didnt seem he met hanyang :( So that scene where he got arrasted was from the present? So saad.. his bf wanted to marry him :(

May 23 2020 2:02 pm This is one of the best dramas I have ever watched. It had absolutely everything. Whatever genre you prefer, this will be a good fit for you. It's funny (!), serious, sad, heartwarming, romantic, gritty, uplifting, and has a strong message of integrity and redemption. Maybe not 100% realistic in every way, but what show is? Every character played such an important role, it's hard to say who was the most engaging or endearing. Definitely also highlights a truth that I think is important to remember, which is that each and every one of us has the capacity to make mistakes, and simultaneously, we are all capable (and in need) of goodness and love. We can choose each day which one it will be. And I agree with so many other commenters, the OST is amazing. My favorite is Woo's Nostalgia - so powerful.

The director of this drama is the same as the one who directed the Reply series, so the style of humor is very similar. If you enjoyed the humor in the Reply series, you’ll enjoy it in here too! I laughed in every episode and loved the balance of romance, intense, and touching moments T__T Prepare to see a lot of flashbacks, all the backstories and little twists were great!!
The cast list is long because many would only appear for a good amount of episodes, but it was great seeing the large variety of talented actors. The bromance and loyalty in this drama is so real, I enjoyed it from beginning to end <33
10/10 would definitely recommend watching!! The OST is awesome too :))

The storyline is just my taste, it has light and funny moments, it made me laugh/entertained and it made me curiousin each episode and character. There were also touching moments that made me cry. This was fun.

Mar 21 2020 12:21 pm Actually this is my first time writing K-drama (a not really) reviews. Been watching K-drama since I was high school, which is 9 years ago. I just feel the urge to write a review for this one. Have watched lots of K-drama and I can easily say that this is 1 of my top 3 K-drama. Prison Playbook is too much underrated, more people need to know about this gem. I already seen this 5 times already and it never gets me bored.
Overall, it was a very heartwarming kinda drama with every genre crammed on it with just perfect portion. Every characters has their own story and they shine on their own without overshadowing the others. It also supported by amazing act of the actors/actress. Kudos to the writer that able to create this kinda story. I laughed and cried at the same time and you just know every scene has meaning on it. Maybe the most obvious one is "Don't judge a book by its cover" (except captain Na, LOL, he gets on my nerves a lot). I also think the ending is perfect. Not the kinda of perfect that it's gonna be what we wanted, but more to each characters ending is just right.
I'm not gonna deep dive into each characters and plots here. Just wanna say to everyone who hesitated to watch just because the title: NEVER HESITATE! you don't know what you're gonna miss. You'll enjoy every single episode and at the end you'll be craving for more. Just watched it and you'll know what I mean.
OH AND ALSO! the OST thooooooooo are greaaat! my favorite is Would be Better by Heize. If you have no time to watch the drama, at least listen to this song and it'll make you curious enough ;)

Mar 13 2020 3:08 am @fnjjf it does make sense, in a way. why ? because druggies's worst enemy is addiction. no matter what rehab you went on, no matter how long theyve been clean, if they themselves dont have realllllly strong will, theyre gonna be back at the bottom in no time. I think the ending for hanyang is perfect, because in real life we dont always have a happy ending, and that ending make this drama more realistic.
Feb 28 2020 6:56 pm very very good drama I haven't laughed that much at a show in a long time it was so good,,, but i'm so disappointed and unsatisfied with how they handled Han-yang's ending, it doesn't make sense to me why he gave in to drugs as soon as he was released and able to see Ji Won again after refusing any kind of drug for 3ish months waiting for that moment??? I don't get it... I felt like they needed to elaborate on his story a little more in the last episode bc he wasn't in it at all...

Feb 09 2020 2:23 am The story is a masterpiece. I enjoyed every single bit of it. This is my first time commenting on a film and I tell you that Prison playbook is a must watch. It's realistic, funny and really interesting. It's different from the regular drama series. I like the fact that there are no love triangles but everyone liked each other and wanted to help each other. Very funny and extremely touching at the same time. No doubt this series will make you laugh hard and cry. I feellll soooo soooo bad for looney and cause of him I want a season 2. Pls he is sooooo handsome, jovial and needs sooo much love and care. I really felt sorry for him and his ending scene made me cry sooo hafd

Looney's ending kinda ironic wasn't it? I think he was misunderstanding things about how his parents and his lovers weren't waiting for him at the day he was released. Though they were waiting at the place he was requested before. Sighs. It's depressing. And the other friend who was there I guessed he was someone deliberately sent by the police to trap him just to make those police got promotions. Aigooo. Ironic but relatable and realistic for drugs addict too. Looney got no other choice but fallen into the same hole again, one of the reason was because of his unstable feelings of being abandoned by his beloved.

Lol. Everyone has doing their job greatly here. After all this drama is an outstanding and worth to watch. It can make you laugh out loud yet it can make you cry. It really recommended. I hope there will be season 2 if possible.
Aug 12 2019 6:54 am I just completed this series and absolutely loved it!! I laughed..I cried...but I want to know what happened to Han Yang!! Who actually set up for the drug dealer to wait for him outside? It felt as though the police were working together with him to get Han Yang arrested again!! As Purplejan mentioned below, he could have done it cause he felt more affection in the cell than with his family but he was so excited to meet his bf outside again...the present and all...Han Yang is a softy version of a b*tch.lol..and Officer Song got me wondering if he is a motormouth like that in real life as his character is similar to the one he played in Tomorrow With You. I think the main reason I loved this series is that everyone is not whom they seem to be(except for Office Na, lol) and that a person can truly change for the better given a second chance.

All of the cast members portrayed their roles right and the script was humorous. A must watch series, very entertaining.
Jul 11 2019 9:19 pm another underrated drama that deserves more Credit and perhaps Season 2? I feel bad for Jung Kyoung-Ho his character was completely been over shadowed by the Support Characters. I would have given this a perfect score but I was really disappointed how things turned for Captain Yoo also for Kaist, Crony & Hanyang whose end story was left as a mystery.
Aside from Drug Addiction & Depression Hanyang / Looney is suffering from Split Personality even Kaist was confused also Joon-Ho said that he can't read his personality. When ever he becomes Serious it feels am seeing a different person specially when he finally got out of the jail after turning his back to Lt. Paeng I had goose bumps all over cause in that scene I realized how scary Hanyang really is. I also think that instead of calling him self Lonely he let everyone calls him Looney because he doesn't want people to see that Looney is in fact just a facade. This is the biggest reason why we need Season 2 cause this question needs to be resolve. Also I want more of Captain Yoo, Crony & Kaist.

The last prison scene made me left thinking, with none of the 'good guys' left, prison is just a place you'd not want in to. it's like the creator just telling us "this is just a fiction, now back to reality" Also, Looney is potraying the harsh reality of a druggie,I feel really bad for him, but when I think about it, it's necessary. Remember what Min-Cheol said in eps.15 when Looney and Captain Yoo fight in toilet, now it became strong message.

But not realizing that I cannot stop myself watching and wanting for the next episode.. Its a mix of different genre love, suspense, comedy and a bit of drama.. It will give you rollercoaster of emotions.. it's a 5 star for me.. Good job.. Highly recommended.. ???
May 10 2019 12:39 am I’ve actually read the reviews before I watched the drama. Many of the reviews tell how good the drama is. I gave it a shot, and it’s surprisingly good. I feel like this is a lightweight drama, but it’s also not that light so I don’t know how to explain lol. But it’s 10/10 for me. I couldn’t stop watching because it was really fun and it didn’t bore me even a tiny bit. I was also surprised that each episode is 1 hour and a half long but it didn’t feel that long, guess I was caught up at the moment. Tbh, I rarely watch dramas that have light plots (ex : romance dramas without conflicts such as murders or similar to that) but yeah this is really good! A must watch, and it’s on my number 1 favorite drama list <3

It’s amazing that they can make you cry and the same time roll on the floor laughing. Just like everybody else, I’m hoping there will be Season 2.

This drama not just contain of crimes, but there are so much twists about how the male lead and others around him react upon conflicts and moreover there is lot of comedy there which totally makes sense and not awkward at all.
Definitely recommend to watch!!! Well GOOD JOB Prison Playbook casts and team!

Oct 02 2018 7:05 am Currently on ep.10.I watch this drama because of Jung Kyung Ho (Lee Joon Ho) and Jung Hae In (Captain Yoo) but ended up loving everbody and everything about this drama.I love the cellmates bromamce,I love Officer Paeng how he truly cares for them although he acts stern towards them.I love Kaist,Dr.Ko and HanYang thay always make me laugh and Min Chul and of course our baseball super star Kim Je Hyeok oppa despite their age gap he and Kystal has a great chemstry plus Joon Ho and Je Hee and ?? ahahahha.I just love everything about this drama and every character is important and never a dull moment. Super worth it just like IU and Lee Sun Gyun's My Ahjusshi truly TVn never disappoints.???

Highly recommended and definitely worth your time. There was never an episode that did not have me literally laugh out loud.Perfect balance of drama, comedy and whatnot. I love every character in every episode. Every characters/prisoners' story was heartwarming...Though how I wish there was a happy ending for Hanyang/Loony... I will be rewatching this cos it's so good. Hoping for a second season :)

This drama is not about the hard times in prison but about the people in the prison. Their story and how their interaction with each other. It's about relationship, bromance, kinship. And I love the comic relief that pops up every now and then. Always had me laughing.
Watch it. You will find your self drawn to it. I am going to rewatch it.

I'm so cross with myself for sleeping on this because I thought it would be about betrayals and what not like most jail dramas are and I'm just so over that plot (plus there too scary for me ?) but this was so well done. You get to love all the characters even though they're there for such a short time. I'll tell ya I started this drama for Kyungho oppa (who was AMAZING btw ) stayed for Park Haesoo ( new actor to stan i mean how adorable is this dude???) But i love the drama because of Krystal's character. I'm so proud of how AMAZINGLY she has grown as an actress! This will be my defining character for her and I'm so excited to see what she does in the future.

May 11 2018 4:40 am I watched this kdrama for Jung Hae In so I started from eps 5. But can't stop watching until the end. This is the most entertaining kdrama I ever watch. You won't stop laughing to see their bromance OMG yet full of life lesson here. Love and hate! However, I was a bit surprised that Looney fall again into the drugs just right after he out from the prison. At least it rose my awareness on the drugs issue.

Still can't believe my WINNER stan Kang Seung-Yoon was one of the casts even in the parody version of this drama. Maybe to support Hyelin for their comeback. Although this drama was hilarious too.

I read somewhere that the writer's message is to give hope. And that your sins dont define you. The depth and detailed story not only by the prisoners but also the correction officers. So much love for jehyeok and the squad. (officer lee, lieutenant paeng, looney, kim minchul, dr. ko, jean valjean, jailbird, captain yoo, crony). I hope this drama wins a daesang! Well deserved actors, writers, and pds!

Based on the actors from previous shows; I knew it was going to be funny but what I did not know was how incanely great every single one of them were going to be. (Specifically for “looney”) This is a must must must watch. I really hope they win a lot awards.

Mar 02 2018 11:37 am Hilarious drama, honestly the comedy overshadowed the "drama" in this show. It's a collection of vignette. The true soul of this drama is the interaction between the male characters more than anything. Not only the two leads (Haesu & Kyeong ho), but also the interaction between Je-Hyeok and his cell and prison mates. Funniest of them all were the Hanyang-Kaist and Hanyang-Jeongwu interactions.
I agree with people below, this drama could've run shorter (an hour per episode is a great length), but really you won't even notice the time most of the time as you'll be engrossed in it. Highly recommend. It's one of the best Kdrama of 2017 (this alongwith Defendent, Secret Forest, Just Between Lover and Chief Kim are my top 5 of 2017).

Feb 24 2018 3:09 pm If someone told me in the beginning that this would become one of my favorite dramas of all time, I wouldn't have believed them. I was bored out of my mind throughout the first 3-4 episodes, but I did feel compelled to keep watching for some reason. And I'm so glad I did. The genre itself, black comedy, is brilliant. And Prison Playbook is as black and as comic as it gets. Laughed out loud and shed actual tears more than once. The realism, the bromances, the prison dynamics, actual LGBT representation - everything was like a breath of fresh air. And the soundtrack! Discovered some actual gems. I feel like Unfortunate Guy and Dalpaengi will be on repeat for the next few weeks. This was also the first time ever that I found myself growing this attached to the characters. I'm sensing serious withdrawal symptoms incoming. Definitely recommending this one to everyone!

Feb 18 2018 5:24 am The premise was interesting, but the pacing was too slow that I often got bored in the middle of the episode. ~90 minutes is a bit too long for a show like this, it could've been better if it was saturated at 60 minutes.
Anyway, the subtle humour the screenplay writer opted for was a warm change from most Kdramas which chooses to go for a more grand type of romance. As a fan of character driven dramas, I really liked how the character went development as well. It didn't resort to over the top scenes and grand moments to move the show. The acting was another highlight of the show. Park Hae Soo does very well, even though it's the first time he has lead a show. I liked the interaction between his and Kyeong Ho's character, the chemistry was strong between the two. It was reminiscent of the Nam Gung Min and Lee Jun Ho (LOOOOL it's the same name) camarederie from Chief Kim. I was surprised by Soojung as well, I've never been impressed by her acting in previous dramas as I always found her robotic, but she was quite decent here.
I'd recommend this to people who like slow paced dramas with an understated ambiance. The romance is secondary, episodes are very long (and sometimes tedious) and the show is devoid of grand moments so some may not like it. But if one has the patient then they should definitely watch this as it unfolds into a very neatly written drama.

I enjoyed watching prison playbook from ep 1 to 16 didn't feel a bit bored the story was so nice and heartwarming :') All the characters grew on me.. Although I wanted to see them meet at the end and I didn't like what happened to HanYang at the end but it was very enjoyable overall and all the actors did a great job. Park Hae Soo was perfect here.. my first time seeing him in a drama and I fell for him <3

Feb 01 2018 7:58 pm One of the best Kdramas ever made. Makes you both laugh and cry. I especially like the humanity aspect of it all. However there are some weaknesses such as:
1) Krystal Jung's character is not really needed. A little selfish, and does not reciprocate all the affection she receives. I don't understand why the main lead needs her. Which leads to...
2) Why does the supposed best friend always try to make the lead try to pressure/guilt trip/physically abuse to connect with her. A real bro would be concerned about the friend well being, not the friend's ex-gf, first and foremost.
3) Maybe it's a Korean thing, but the bromance is bordering on being too cringe-worthy type. In the west the relationships demonstrated by all the guys with each other in this drama is too close for comfort.

I tried so hard to find it, but I couldn't because this song is not one of the drama ost. So if anyone knows the name of this song will you please tell what is the name of it.
Jan 30 2018 11:17 pm This was such an amazing drama, I don't even know how to cope with my life now that I've finished watching it. I have "Bravo My Life" on repeat constantly and I just... wow... I loved every single episode and every single character. I loved the plot, the conflict, just everything. I loved the romance between few couples, how it wasn't too much like a typical kdrama but just enough to have me on the edge of my seat giggling like a little girl. Every single actor and actress in this drama made an impact and it wouldn't have been the same without each and every one of them. I've watched many kdramas and though there are many good ones out there, the only two Korean productions I can currently promote with all my heart is "Ode to My Father" and "Prison Playbook." Seriously well done!!

The story is amazing and never gets boring with new characters being added all the time, every character has a story and their own charms (no one is a fly on the wall lol), and it has a deep meaning while maintaining to be funny. Best drama of 2017! Can't wait to see what the writers have in mind for 2018.

Prison Playbook is one of my top 5 ABSOLUTE PERFECTIONs. I fell in love with ALL of the characters. Great writing, great cast, great story!!!!!!!

I am going to miss these characters so much though, I have fallen in love with at least two of them. The casting people made perfect choices and the acting was great. Episodes never lagged. Everyone involved in making this did a great job, thank you. Can't wait to see what the actors do next. Off to rewatch it. ?

Sometimes you can prisoners who somehow seem to have more humanity then the officers who work there. I just appreciate what this show does, as well as all the background stories of the prisoners that convey who they are.

Okay. I cannot help but tears flowing a few times throughout watching the final episode(including to realize that it is the finale, and I don't know if my feelings will be invested the same when re-watching). There are too many scenes/moments that I would like to mention, but I would highlight a few.
When Officer Paeng was at the school and the kids said that prison was for bad guys, then he said “But everyone commits a bad act at least once.” The ability of this series to portray even the bad folks as human was so wonderful to see.
I like how Joon-Ho slowly becoming like Officer Paeng, even though he said he can't like Officer Paeng. Even the final scene of finale shows he acted like Officer Paeng, haha.
"Be moderate in criticizing people, you may become like them unconsciously"
As far drugs issue, I know many are frustrated by the ending of Han-Yang's character in the drama, but I personally satisfy with it, even though it is indeed bitter. This drama really succeed to open our eyes to have better understanding of those who take drugs, instead of judging them stereotypically. It also reminds us the hardship of those who struggling to quit, that it needs help and support from people around him/her.
I also like they show a bit more about Officer Na in the finale, and it is funny to see flashback of his character in school.
I love to see relationship growth between Jung-Woo and his brother, Joon-Ho with his colleagues(especially with Officer Paeng and Officer Song), and of course between our cell 2-6 inmates (Je-Hyuk, Min-Chul, Kaist, Gobaksa, Jung-Woo, Hanyang, Janbaljang, Dolmani). I like to see Beobja to be hired by Je-Hyuk in the end.
Argh. I have lost words to say at the moment. Going to watch BTS clips before saying goodbye(for now, before re-watching later) to this masterpiece. There are too much lessons from every single characters, their behaviors and character development throughout about 24 hours-long drama.
Finally, I would like to quote what Shin Won-Ho PD said: "If there is a message [in the drama] I want to say, it’s of ‘hope.’ This is a story of people in a place at the end of the world. Some of them dream of making a comeback, some of them fall even further as they continue to live. But I want to show that there can be hope in this situation.”
And yeah! This is now my most favorite K-Drama, replacing Signal. I really hope this drama will be crowned as best drama during 2018 Baeksang Award(at least be nominated), just like Signal did two years ago.
Hopefully all of us can be a better person in view of nurturing better society! :)

I started it out of curiosity (because of the cast actually) and ended up very surprised at how I liked it, and how it really made me laugh out loud, stressed me out, made me cry. I hope this drama gets more attention and recognition. I hope for a season 2!

I think that viewers these days are fine with stories without romance and just focusing on bromance instead. Ji Ho doesn't really help in the growth of the drama, her presence is just an accessory that can be discarded at any time. Her character is clingy, spoiled and temperamental and it messes up the whole drama. It is better if she is not there at all. And the age gap between those two.. yeah, it doesn't help either. It is like a love story between an uncle and a little girl.. utterly gross.

I don't like Ji-Ho character because she is just too spoiled and self-centered. The story will be better if they just throw away that character. Minus the flashback love thingy, this drama is superb.

As soon as one of the characters left, I’d feel sad for the others who are remaining bum& get anxious too hoping KJH doesn’t get hurt lol. Thanks guys for coming up with an interesting story line. It’s definitely my favorite kdrama of all time and that says a lot bc i’ve been watching dramas since i was 4 years old. The character development is perfect to the point where i dont even realize theyre actors. We’re able to learn abt each character and fall in love (or hate!) with all of them. Though the episodes were long, they went by so fast! Im so sad its over but lets hope for a season two!
P.s. as for hanyang’s ending, maybe its a way to bring him back to season 2?? ;)))

This drama is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED! It Will make you laugh, cry and inspired in each episode. All roles have great act, Standing applause to writer, director and all casts. One of the Best drama! I already watch many drama but this drama is One of a kind. Hope there is season 2.

IT'S THE BEST k-drama I've ever seen in my life and I've been watching k-dramas for years. I honestly wish this drama would never end. You fall in love with each character and the comedy and the whole plot. It's hilarious yet also tear-jerking especially ep. 13 and 14. ah... All the actors are top-notch!! They're all reallllyyy good at acting. I hope that there will be a season 2 for this drama!!

I love everything about this drama, but like many other viewers, I don’t care about Jiho’s character nor her love life with Jehyuk. Not really Krystal’s fault tho, or is it? I hope to see a spin-off of this drama after it ends or that the director could work on other production real quick :)

Besides the director has other shows other than reply 1988 under his belt he directed the whole reply series (reply 1997 still is my favorite), this show is not a fail. I actually find it less boring than reply 1988.
I binge watched it in less than 2 days I love every character, the only thing I am not too invested on is the main couple romance honestly whenever Krystal is on screen I have to resist the urge to skip, it's not her fault it's just that the inmates are more interesting.Jan 09 2018 3:00 pm This drama is not really good. The pilot episode is really sucks and weak. Tvn trying to bring back Reply 1988's feel with the same director, but failed. And the main character Je-Hyeok, his personality as the same like Choi Taek. And half of the cast is from Reply 1988.
The comedy and the story is trying too hard to be like Reply 1988's formula but they failed. The script has low story. This is just another boring drama.

Everything about this show is perfect, I haven't seen a single false move yet, if I had to point out 1 thing it would be perhaps some repetitive flashbacks about his romantic life , but even that is not enough on its own to take away the beauty of this drama

Idk, but I don't like Ji ho character, kinda useless. Maybe the director want to make krystal appearance as cherry on the cake, but I found it annoying. Unnecessary. But whatever, so far the story's awesome and all the men casts are great. I regret it to not watch it earlier. Btw, I love bromance between kim je hyeok and lee joon ho so far. Friendship goal.

Dec 28 2017 4:45 pm This drama is funny, deep, dark, well thought out, unique and a whole lot more. What really takes my breath away is the amazingly thought out backstory of each character and how these talented actors and actresses bring it all to life.
Like wow! It starts off slow and I had to take my time watching it but somehow each episode gets better and better and better. This is a top quality series and I am so impressed.
Also - GREAT soundtrack!
Must watch!
P.S So proud of Krystal and how she's taking on a different character type and growing as an actress. MeU pride!

I must say that both the writer and the director have done a really great job, as well as our brilliant actors and actresses. I especially love the way the film uses unknown or new actors/actresses to star in this drama. Good plot, good stars !

Dec 14 2017 8:02 pm great drama, great acting, great at everything! it was sad at first, i thought it will be a reaaaally though drama to watch. but i found myself laughing out loud at a scene. when i started to think that this drama was too much to bear, too hard to stay with, there was an unexpected turn and it made me excited. in the end of the day, there is always something special that makes me touched. it's so heartwarming.

Dec 13 2017 5:39 pm I can't get enough of this drama. I can't feel no boredom from the beginning. What I really like in this show is the essence of life being valued on each character. It can make you cry and laugh at an instance. Their acting is so natural that you can even sense the heart poured on each character. I soo love lee kyu hyung.. he is a pro in shifting his character. I soo love choi moo sung.. A big guy with a heart. I soo love jung wo in character here.. A guard with a soft heart but love to curse. I soo love the two leads they are the perfect pair of two long lost bestfriend. Kyung ho's character never overlap on Hae soo's character.. and the two female leads.. well.. it nice to put some romance in this kind of drama.. Looking forward for Hae In's backstory. The cellmates are soo ridiculous, funny and witty. This kind of drama reflect the light and dark sides of those people behind bars. This gives us idea how humanity works on that area and its for us to judge..... Best wishes to all of the cast and crews for bringing this drama in a nice form especially Park Hae Soo. Goodluck!

This is a well-written drama, brilliantly directed with very good actors as its cast. Jae Hyuk and his cellmates backstories will keep you hooked.
The quirky antics of his cellmates, each with their own hillarious personalities makes me want to befriend these criminals, which is really strange in real life! Kaiser with his inventions, speaking with a lisp almost always gets to my funny bone. Looney the adorable druggie turning normal when drugged and his everyday fight with Kaiser... oh gosh, too funny. Now handsome demon captain is added to the fray. So far, we are only seeing his violent side, so I'm so looking forward to his backstory.

What is hilarious is that looney becomes all calm and normal when he is high on meds, but becomes a cartoon character when he is off meds. Watching park haesoo's role brings back memories from reply 1988 of our dear taekkie with that mushroom haircut. Kaist is another funny character and now with the new entry of dashing demon captain this drama has become much more amusing.

Dec 10 2017 1:17 pm Park Hae Soo is cute. Nice face and body and be plays a very convincing "big silent hunk". Might he have been autistic as a child? Is that why he reads backwards sometimes? Not an expert in the topic but I see he's "different". Definitely not dumb, judging by how he outsmarts others in very unique ways. I'm enjoying this drama immensely.

This drama can make you sad, angry, smile, laugh out loud in just a second, I like the plot, cinematography, editing and this Director really have his own style to direct his show which is his main signature, thumbs up for him, and tbh I've never had favourite character in drama but Jaebeol 2se is too funny too cute and too hard not to be liked,

I really enjoy it, can't wait what twist will he do at the end of each episode. Even though the subtitles come out late, at least still have a chance to watch due to Netflix copyright

Another best crime detective drama from tvN! I really like korean drama for Men! Cause romance are too many..
Beside there’s also comedy in the drama and it really funny! Especially Lee Kyu Hyung as “Second-generation Chaebol” really funny!
The cinematography is so amazing.. Like a Movie! Really appreciate the Director and staff, The scripwriter are also wonderful.. make me curious about what’s next..
And the actors are sooo good.. their act isn’t like in drama, like moviee…!

At first I didn’t know it was Jung Kyung Ho who play as Joon Ho, but I realize his voice and face like I have seen it before, Nah Its really Him.. So lucky SooYoung
And Wow I just realize Park Hae Soo is the police in The Legend of The Blue Sea who also play with Sung Dong Il as a criminal And now their part are switched.. Hae Soo being Criminal and Dong Il being a Police in this drama!

I thought he only get some minor role, and I was already grateful to shin wonho pd for that, but apparently his role is quiet important looking that his pic is on the first row.. Being a supporting character in a A-list drama is so much better than jumping as a male lead in some unknown drama. Way to go kang leader ❤

Aug 03 2017 2:27 am This drama has one of the core aspects of the superbly made Secret Forest a.k.a Forest of Secret, Yoo Jae Myung (complex villain Lee Chang Jun) and Lee Kyu Hyung (Yoon Se Won)..both did excellent job in portraying their impossibly unpredicted characters like no other..kyaaa..cant believe it'll be this soon for us to see their next project together thru this upcoming work..hopefully this drama will do great.

However, Shin Won Ho is an amazing director i read about him he is a perfectionist, he make them re-do all the scenes until he was happy, that's why the production was late with the filmming, but at the end the product was perfect.
