Nov 4, 2021 4 0 10 Hello everyone! Before I get to it a little intro on the background of my current, Ok-ish workstation with an threadripper 1900x on a MSI x399 SLI PLUS, cooled by a Noctua, with 64 of sloooow ram (got it to like 1400 with XMP) and a 1080 GPU. To be honest I intended to do an upgrade on or a brand new workstation but reading that new Threadrippers are bit further down the road made me decide to build my first gaming PC. Prolly wanna do some basic OC-ing, don't rly plan to mess with custom settings but pre sent ones. Budget is not rly an issue as you might be able to already tell. I'm looking to get the parts as fast as I can, once I set my sight on something I tend to rush to it to be honest I already found all the bellow listed parts localy for an acceptable price for me. I am in no need for an OS, covered there, same as the monitor, got a nice Samsung 49'' ultrawide which I intend to use with the new build, Spend a few days researching so before going rambo and just getting the parts right away , I decided to get some opinions first. I decided to base the system around AMD, and since I'm a huge fan, Noctua, especially with the new 3070 Noctua edition GPU. Additionally I started researching RAM since I wanna try to go for a higher speed and more optimized timings. So here is what I came up with: Processor - AMD Ryzen 9 5950X - pretty much set in stone https://www.amd.com/en/products/cpu/amd-ryzen-9-5950x RAM - DDR4 64GB (4x16GB), DDR4 3600, CL14, DIMM 288-pin, G.Skill Trident Z RGB F4-3600C14Q-64GTZR https://www.gskill.com/qvl/165/166/1604305845/F4-3600C14Q-64GTZR-Qvl timings&V: CL14-15-15-35 1.45V this is a hard one for me, still don't fully grasp it but from researching and watching some videos i landed with these, tip/help welcome they have quite low cas timings which aint greatly missmatched, and 3600mhz which seems to be the argued sweetspot for the 5950x on the internet ( i saw people saying between 3200 and 4000 but some claiming ryzen works better on the lower end) MB - Asus ROG CROSSHAIR VIII DARK HERO, AM4, ATX, 4x DDR4, AMD X570, WL (90MB1760-M0EAY0) - suggestions, from my research the picked G.skill ram is compatible with speed and timings https://rog.asus.com/motherboards/rog-crosshair/rog-crosshair-viii-dark-hero-model/ PSU - be quiet! DARK POWER 12 1000W - would like to know if i can get off with less W, would still take the dark power 12 tho, just less beefy https://www.bequiet.com/en/powersupply/2151 Storage - Seagate FireCuda 530 2 TB 4.0 3D TLC NVMe - can't rly get my hands on the 4 TB one.. https://www.seagate.com/gb/en/products/gaming-drives/pc-gaming/firecuda-530-ssd/# CPU cooler - Noctua NH-D15 Chromax Black - this one is set in stone https://noctua.at/en/nh-d15-chromax-black GPU - I honestly wanna get the new 3070 noctua edition but it doesnt seem it will be easy, so I'm rly open to suggestions here. I would like to upgrade/downgrade to the noctua one once i get my hands on it. A random one i found on caseking and considering is the GeForce RTX 3080 TUF Gaming O10G, 10240 MB GDDR6X. https://www.caseking.de/asus-geforc...F42j2Vk8WIDLugXJ0xzM-1636082772-0-gaNycGzNDpE Case - I'm honestly still researching this, (might even opet to weld one myself down the road) in my opinion the cases out there lack exhaust fans,, but gotta deal with whats on the market, so my top contenders are the Fractal Design Torrent,, the Lian Li Lancool 2 Mesh,, Phantaks P400A and the Corsair 5000D AIRFLOW. If someone happens to know a case with more rear fans lmk! Once I pick a case I plan to experiment with adding and replacing stock fans, ofc with Noctua. For example the rear fan with Noctua NF-S12B redux-1200 , some NF-P14s redux-1500 PWM on the top and or bottom an something like the reduxes or even NF-A14 PWM chromax.black.swap on the front. (you might laugh at me for this but its something i wanna experiment with and waste my time on X) Thanks in advance for your ratings and suggestions.🍿 Last edited: Nov 5, 2021 Sort by date Sort by votesDSzymborski

Now, I know you say the 5950X is set in stone, but do you still plan to build a new workstation? The 5950X makes sense if this PC will be dragooned into workstation duties a lot, but if it's a pure gaming rig, it's hard to justify the 5950X unless the money's really meaningless. You can get away with an excellent, top-tier 850W PSU just fine. Upvote 1 Downvotemichozara
Nov 4, 2021 4 0 10 Yes, indeed a new workstation should come if I like the new Threadrippers, but they are not out for some more time if I'm not mistaking The gaming PC might be used for work aswell, that's not excluded, if I like it more then my current workstation I might even make it my main for some of the tasks. Not worried about putting the 5950x to good use here Edit; Re PSU, is the be quiet! good or could you recommend a better one? Upvote 0 Downvotemichozara
Nov 4, 2021 4 0 10 I was further RAM researching and looking for whats available. the one above, 4x 16 GB F4-3600C14Q-64GTZR has CL 14-15-15-35 1.45V timings and i can get it for around 700€ - unsure if this is bdie https://www.gskill.com/qvl/165/166/1604305845/F4-3600C14Q-64GTZR-Qvl As I was looking if there's something other i found a rather interesting kit, the F4-3600C16D-32GTZR with CL16-16-16-36 1.35V which I can get for around 320€ https://www.gskill.com/product/165/166/1562839659/F4-3600C16D-32GTZR My question is if the latter are bdie, in which case I should be safe of buying 2 packs and they would be same chips inside (similarly to buying a 4 pack) to get 64GB again?! The other thing that interests me is which would in theory work better? The F4-3600C14Q-64GTZR 4x16(64GB) kit with CL 14-15-15-35 1.45V timings or 2x(so again 64GB) of the F4-3600C16D-32GTZR 2x(16) with CL16-16-16-36 1.35V timings A little update on the progress: Picked up the Noctua CPU cooler together with their NT-H2 thermal paste (havent used that one and only the H1 is included). The Be Quiet! PSU, the Asus Dark Hero motherboard and the 2TB Fire Cuda are on their way as well. Still hunting for a 3070 Noctua, found only an overpriced one so far, 2200€ is what the guy wants for it. Given that they went for around 700€ initially I'm not sure i wanna pay above 1000€ from scalpers. Aside from the Noctua 3070 hunt find a GPU has been an absolute nightmare, Haven't seen a cheaper 3080Ti then 2500€ so far, proly safe to say closer to 3k€ (I'm not rly looking for components outside of the EU cos of the heavy import taxes) and the 3080 are basically out of stock, probably bought by all them miners. To be honest the only 3080 I found in stock was the strix rtx3080 O10G v2 gaming for around 1750€ https://rog.asus.com/us/graphics-ca...strix/rog-strix-rtx3080-o10g-v2-gaming-model/ Might be that I'll "have to" pick that one up.
