  • Podcast: What I Learned at The World's Best Car Show
OrenInCdM O I'm 3+ months into a new 750 and enjoying scouring eBay, forums, tuning sites etc and just really enjoying my first great car. I tried the A8, S8, Panny 4S, XJR 550 and even the GL63-S Coupe... but when I approached this 7er with all the trimmings, the search quickly came to an end. The difference between this car and other makes boiled down to the fact that I was seemingly asking more questions starting with, "What does this button do?" or "Can you show me how to do that again? rather than, "Is that that option special order only?" or "Are they updating that in 2018?" Yes... this car has some very, very cool tricks up its sleeve, not the least of which is perhaps the most tamed down, stock, four and a half liter V8 on the market that a $1000 chip very quickly (pun intended) unleashed instantly , but more on that later. There was no question that performance was a foregone conclusion, neither this car, nor Audi's version, nor Porsche's version, nor Mercedes version were going to feel so significantly different that I had to choose one of those over the 7er. In the end it came down to the details and in the BMWs case, the looks. The thought that kept running through my mind was that I really never saw this car before. It looked much larger up close, with a larger grill, larger headlights, bigger and bolder wheels... I honestly don't think I had seem a new 7er for an entire year following it's 2016 release. That struck me as quite odd, because growing up on the East Coast, 7ers and S500s are very common. As I was talking to the salesman, he explained that the main reason I don't see more of these on the road is that it's very expensive. Well, true I suppose, however, where I live in Newport Beach, CA we have the biggest Mercedes dealership in the country, so there are far more AMGs riding around. When my friend who drives a RR Wraith and a Huracan, comments that he hasn't even seen the new 7er... and then when he comments on the lights inside and smashes the pedal... and looks at me and says holy s"**, this is better than my Bentley, and starts telling me about how when he was 35 he remembers his 7er... I knew I made the right decision. Now, some 3 months later, the Maserati SUV is more common, as is every model Mercedes, every Land Rover and every Porsche... by the sheer numbers I see on the street... they all far exceed those of the new 750i, which I try and spot on the road. My only regret, up until last month, was that I didn't get the M760, because for a few bucks more per month, I could have had a significantly larger engine and output. I resigned to the fact that I wouldn't have anything to look forward to if I got that as my first really nice car. That feeling grew worse when I realized how few aftermarket performance parts exist and even the brand spanking new Dinan FreeFlow exhaust wasn't available only a month ago. That's when I found Racechip. I had a professional BMW mechanic from a different dealership come to my house (after finding him sidejobbing it on Craigslist) and with a dual connection to the charge-air pressure sensors located at the bottom of the intercoolers. Presumably the turbo reading feedbacl being relayed indicates not enough O2 or fuel, and other readings I can say with confidence that my 0 to 60 feels like its almost a full second less, and I would be surprised if it was anything more than 3.3s. or 3.6ish, whatever I'm not a pretend racecar driver. I'll be buying the equipment to tell me exactly how fast it is, dyno it and post some pictures. Racechip made this already powerful and quick 7er Lightning Effng Fast. Pics of times to follow with dyno sheet in a month or so. #1 · Dec 17, 2017 (Edited) I'm 3+ months into a new 750 and enjoying scouring eBay, forums, tuning sites etc and just really enjoying my first great car. I’m a car guy and my last 6 cars are either Mercedes or AMG, but I did have a R nine T for a few years. I need a DD and I’m leaning towards the new 7, as I’m a lawyer and the new 7 in black would be appropriate for a lot of reasons, most of all highway cruises. Never did prefer S class, as it’s a big fluffy sedan and doesn’t have the sport handling that the new 7 with the autobahn pack has. So this post intrigued me as I was looking at Eurocharged as a tuner. To OP why not go with a tuner such as EC and get all the gains? I’m guessing it was convenience? Looking forward to you making proper German “muscle” from this engine. #3 · Dec 18, 2017

_________________________Down Here____ How does Eurocharged or EC, tune these cars? The off duty dealer mechanic told me that one thing he has seen a few times is when a client comes in preparing to move overseas. They ask the dealer to recode the car "European" so that the limits of exhaust and emissions are not in place. Have you heard of that? 1 Reply #5 · Dec 18, 2017 (Edited) Actually they are out of Houston. They have done 2 of my cars with incredible results. I Spoke with them and they indicated that they had tuned many of the ECUs for 7 series BMW Basically, you just overnight box And t hey return it next day, plug and play. They claimed 90hp and 130tq increase with vast improvements in throttle response. New model not up on website, but they can do it. Racechip is basically a piggyback system and not a remapping of ECU. BTW it***8217;s same ECU as M5. #6 · Dec 20, 2017 You are not fooling anyone with the M badge on the back of a non M car, looks good otherwise. There's also no way in hell you're anywhere close to 3.3s 0-60 in this car unless you do some serious upgrades. BMS or Racechip will net some performance gains, but nothing that extreme. #7 · Dec 23, 2017

He didn't did he? Don't Badge a Car guys. Anyway, I agree probably 40hp and 50 tq. 1 Reply #9 · Dec 23, 2017 Didn’t know that. Maybe debadge the M in rear. That’s what I would probably do. I’m guessing your 0-60 is reduced by .2-.3 seconds. Let us know. #11 · Dec 24, 2017 http://www.thedrive.com/polizei144/7384/the-last-transporter-2017-bmw-m760i-xdrive-review Says it all. The reason for this fuss is because BMW, as corporate decision, decided not to make a 750i MSport upped with M Performance Parts or M Wheels, an "M7". That choice causes those who have purchased an M5 or X6M or M6 to quickly claim that those models are not "M's", I believe only because there comes a certain preconceived notion with an M5 that it is faster. Right? With all of these parts, it is not an "M" because of it simply doesnt perform the same. This article makes it clear. The fastest 2017 BMW, not an "M*", but an "M***i". For all intents and purposes, yes it is not a corporate "M". Badging that says M Sport or M Performance would be appropriate correct? (Would also look better) This has nothing to do with speed and er

The M emblem in the sides is from the factory, meant to designate the M sport features #12 · Jan 4, 2018 (Edited) RESULTS ARE IN!!! First I would like to thank Joe, the owner of Superior Performance in Placentia, CA. Joe had an inground DynoJet and ran two tests for me. He did explain that the Torque test was difficult because the 7er makes the full 480lb at 1800rpm. On a dyno, it doesnt allow you to get that early start you need to achieve full lb measurements. More on torque later and I would like some interpretation of those results. Now, for HP. The big HP. Measure at the Wheels, on Run #1: 440whp, Run #2: 435whp WOW! Significantly more than what the other forum members suggested it would achieve. In fact it is exactly what the company says it would achieve. I asked Joe if this was a 15-18% difference b/t what I could realistically convert whp to bhp. Joe said no, more like 20%. Well, 440whp x 20% is 88bhp. 440whp x 18% is 79.2hp. Gains. Real Gains. 440whp + 88bhp= 528bhp over the 443bhp claimed by BMW. That's 85bhp more from the Racechip Tune. I still have another 4lbs of boost to go. The Racechip has 2 dials inside, pictures forthcoming that allow me to increase the total by 0.3Bar Holy S#@! another 44whp?? Now for Torque. Here we had, Run #1: 421lb, Run #2: 433lb= 519lb. This measurement is hard to write accurately simply because of the way BMW delivers 100% of the torque @1800rpm. These are amazing results. Let me tell you guys, there's not a single BMW tuner in Southern California that has a program for this G12. (Also what's all the confusion about whether this is a G11 or G12? Wikipedia says it's a G11 because the G12 they show has rear reflectors that are at the bottom of the bumper vs where these are in the middle. They only shipped the LWB to America, so simply stated, there's a European version of this vehicle that looks different and is called the LWB version. whereas here it's just the US version.) Tuning a G12 is just something people don't do, thanks to this company, and their plug-and-play system, I can say with certainty that they did a great job in the development and implementation of their harness.

#13 · Jan 4, 2018 I wanted to get a Racechip for my X6 but I haven't seen many reviews. You may have sold me. #14 · Jan 4, 2018 Jay... Besides the Dyno... It is a smooth gain, no jerking. In conjunction with the Racechip XLR $250ish, that power IS IMMEDIATELY available. No lag. Installation was tricky. Had to remove several top panels laying in an around the hood latch and behind the radiator to access the Intercooler pressure sensors. the Craigslist mechanic who help me install it for a couple hundred bucks, has come out since one time to clear some check engine codes, other than that I've had no issues with it installed and on at all times for the past 2 months. After the dyno today no check engine lights either which means you can really light it up with no issues. I know that Joe at Superior Performance quoted me 20% loss on the drivetrain between BHP and WHP. I after Iasked 15-18%? What are your thoughts about that? #15 · Jan 4, 2018 Thanks for update. Not sure what exactly the drivetrain losses but it sounds like you’ve gotten reasonable gains from the racechip. The problem is that you’ve spent over 1000$ for a system that’s throwing codes that will be recorded in the Canbus system of the car. Codes are never cleared completely as the manufacturer wants a failsafe procedure to pull up any engine abnormalities if a warranty claim is ever made. You will IMO throw more codes as time goes on. But at the end of the day, it sounds like your happy with result and that’s all that matters. Happy motoring. #16 · Feb 19, 2018 Yep. Well, lets say there is a major malfunction while I'm flying down the road with my "actually" tuned and "actually 535bhp" 7er... does it seem like any of us will be 1) Worried about codes 2) Worried about an engine repair/replace bill. Maybe in the 2 series forum? nah this is Bimmerfest... Yugofest is grouped with Skodafest on a different site. But seriously, Dealers do not have a lease return surcharge just because a client brings in a car that is out of warranty. If they did, I see your point, otherwise... would anyone here actually agree that $1000 is too much to spend on an 80+hp tune? Also, if Im writing about tuning doesnt it sound a little odd to be mentioning Canbus or Datalogging codes? I mean is that something that someone writing about tuning a car seems like is actually their concern AMG Guy?

0 Reply #17 · Feb 21, 2018 You can only keep the ///M badge if you get turbo V12 stickers for the sides. Pathetic.... #18 · Feb 21, 2018 Racechip numbers for added power are pretty accurate. But I suggest that you test the acceleration times using a GPS based performance meter (like PerformanceBox by Racelogic) for accuracy. But dyno or phone apps are not very reliable.
