Hey guys, my friend is upgrading to a 1080p monitor and he'd like to get a better GPU to power it then the Radeon HD 4350 currently powering his 1280x1024 monitor.

We were looking at some second hand GPUs and the best two we could find that he is willing to afford and are somewhat nearby to where we live are a Sapphire HD 4870 1GB and an EVGA GT 740 2GB.

Which one of these do you think would be the better performer? It's not going to be used for demanding stuff, mostly stuff like TF2, Garry's Mod, etc.

Power is also not a huge concern, he's running an Antec VP550 and rent covers the power bill.

***Please no "save up more for X card" replies, these GPUs are what we are trying to compare, and it's going in an Athlon X2 system so nothing more powerful is needed***

Save a little more, buy an R7 260X, play games at 1080p.

GT740 would be better. Newer architecture, more VRAM, lower power consumption.

Is the gt 740 gddr5? If so I would get it instead of the 4870. In terms of performance they are similar, but the gt 740 has lower power consumption and is newer.

In Belgium they are 100 euro, I believe it's not worth the 100.

That time I saved Linus' WiFi pass from appearing on YouTube:

You can find cheaper 560Ti-s. (and they're more powerful)

    I still use one :D

    How much for the 740?

    Both are $40.

Save a little more, buy an R7 260X, play games at 1080p.

None. Let him save up for at least an R7 series card or GTX 750 or above.

A 260X or GTX 750 here cost at least $140 new. That's a lot more then $40 and he's not looking to spend that much right now.

    No it's the DDR3 version.

Oh. Get the 4870 then as it will perform faster. Try to keep a look out for something like a 550 ti though.

It's only TF2, GM, CS:S and other related non-demanding titles. It also does not have to be maxed out at 1080p.

Marginally, yes. But it's not worth the 40 bucks. Let him at least save up for this:

The cheapest 560Ti on Canadian eBay is this one, which is $93 + $25 shipping + $10 import charges.

That's still more then twice as much as he's willing to pay. That card performs worse then a 6870 which we can get for $60 here if needed. However he only got $40 for doing some work for a friend that he didn't expect to get paid for, so that's all he has to spend on a GPU and it's only the two that I asked because they're located in the same neighborhood as us.

Also this is going in a very old PC with an Athlon X2 and 2 or 3GB of RAM running Vista. Nothing more powerful is needed, and he will be building a brand new rig after getting money from Christmas and Chinese new year in February, so spending more for a "better" GPU right now to play TF2 on for two months isn't reasonable.

That'd still put it at $65, and like I said he turned down a 6870 (7790) that costed $60.

Valve games are very well optimized but they don't run great on Older hardware, as much as people would like you to think "it runs on a potato" it doesn't actually.
