Oct 26, 2013 27 0 10,530 I was going to purchase the new MSI R9 280x for $300 but then I found an MSI HD 7970 for $300. The benchmarks that I have seen say the 7970 outperforms the R9 280x.Is there any new technology or risen I should go with one over the other just curious on your opinions? CPU- AMD FX-8350 Motherboard- Asus Sabertooth 2.0 Solution whats your monitor setup like, or rather where do you want to go. This platinum has like 4 display ports and acouple dvi's. I would most definitely go with one of the higher end r9 280x's. I mean 770 2gb's go for $350 and so does the platinum but you get a three year warranty an extra gb of Vram which is really nice is you have a high res or lots of texture mods. My skyrim already surpasses 2gb, albeit only acouple hundred mb's. To give another idea look at this theoretical comparison of just two stock cards http://www.hwcompare.com/15840/geforce-gtx-770-vs-radeon-r9-280x/ . little reason to spend the same or more for less. Oct 27, 2007 47,806 287 130,890 It actually depends on the individual cards but basically the 280X is a rebranded 7970GHz with tweaks. Basically the 280X does not bring anything new to the table. Upvote 1 Downvote Xlack

Feb 20, 2012 165 0 10,690 I have the MSI 280x and friend has the 7970. They are the same card in most benchmarks they are like 1fps apart. If they are both $300 just get the newer card. It will play bf4 Ultra but both will dip below 60 sometimes in game. Upvote 0 Downvote Zero_

Sep 2, 2013 1,241 0 11,960 charliewilson : MSI or Gigabyte R9 280x? I'd go with the msi, however, the asus is by far the best 280x (out of stock though...) - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121803 Upvote 0 Downvote C

Sep 27, 2013 41 0 10,540 im not sure if you already made your decision but as yourself i also wanted to overclock i went with the Asus R9 280x matrix Platinum rather than the toxic i was originally gonna get. The platinum isnt voltage locked like the toxic so i got it to 1200mhz easy and its silent as can be. Hand binned and it will overclock like butter on your asus board because those hotwire outputs. i suggest you go for that if you want a quality card with a 3 year warranty that doesnt get voided even after you mess with voltages which is waaaay nice if you wanna get experimental like myself haha. Either way both are great choices as Asus and Sapphire are my favorite brands. Upvote 0 Downvote C

I will be playing BF4 and COD Ghosts. Upvote 0 Downvote G

AMD confirmed that in a Q&A I believe on here but the makers of Battlefield 4 were working with AMD so that the game would be optimal with Mantle. This would explain why they were giving free copies with the R9's. Not Exactly sure how much better it would be than going Nvidia though. I'm in the exact same position as OP. Need a GPU that's worthy. Upvote 1 Downvote S
